Calico Spy by Margaret Brownley ~ Review

The Calico Spy (Undercover Ladies #3)Lucie's Review:

Katie  is a Pinkerton Detective, undercover as a Harvey Girl, in order to unravel the mystery of who is behind the recent murder of two Harvey Girls. She is intelligent, observant, and quick on her feet. But Sheriff Branch Whitman, doesn't like the thought of a woman Pinkerton, nosing in on his investigation.

Will they be able to come together in order to solve the murders, before someone else get's killed?

Full of action and adventure, this is a fast paced read full of humor and also great interactions. I like how both Branch and Katie find themselves tested, and forced to rely on their strong faith.

Branch is a Sheriff and a father, two jobs that he takes very seriously, especially after his wife died.

Overall, this is a very well done entertaining read, with a lot going on and multiple characters, and clues that keep you guessing the whole way through. Great for fans of Western Romance, and like a book to keep one on their toes and also bring a smile to the face :)

An Amish Year by Beth Wiseman ~ Review

An Amish Year: Four Amish NovellasLucie's Review:

Four lovely stories by Beth Wiseman.

Rosemary and Paul get a second chance at love, when Paul refuses to give up on her, and continues to respectfully pursue her. And is there to help when her family needs it most.

Jonas has loved Irma Rose since the first time that he saw her, but she thinks his ways are too wild for her. But God uses his out of the box thinking for good, could it perhaps bring them back together?

Patchwork Perfect, was my favorite story of the four. Miriam used to babysit for the young people of the community and she still stays in touch with most of the kids. Eli and Grace's father is a widower looking for a wife, and everyone knows it, leading to some hilarious situations.

The last story is a touching Christmas tale of Katherine a widow with four children, and James Zook shows up out of the blue helping them heal and entertaining them with crazy tall tales.

Overall, a fantastic collection. The stories are not related, though each happens in a different part of the year in a different season. A wonderful read, with great touching stories, of love and friendship.

Hostage Run by Andrew Klavan ~ Review

Hostage Run (Mindwar, #2)My Review:

Rick Dial is back in the second installment of the Mindwar Trilogy he returns to the realm, on a life threatening mission to bring down Kurodar,
and save Mariel and Favian. But Rick isn't the only one in danger, his whole family is, and anyone associated with him--like his friend Molly, who is taken by Kurodar's thugs. Will Rick be able to thwart Kurodar and save the ones dear to him, before time runs out?

The action-packed, non-stop follow up to Mindwar, picks up pretty much right after the previous book, making it very important to read the first book as much of this book is built on assuming knowledge of the previous events. Though it does recount a few things in passing, making it easy to dive right into if it's been a while since reading the first book.

Rick is weakened by his last foray into the Realm, but it has never been so important that he return, as the walls that separate the realm from reality are crumbling, and Kurodar sets his sights on the real world.

A terrific read, that reads as an essential part of the saga, and not like a filler at all, which is so often the case with second books. I loved Rick Dial, as he is a young man, who is brave and heroic, yet he struggles with his own temptations. He's admirable, yet also relate-ably human.

Overall, a terrific addition to the series, sure to thrill and entertain. Riveting to the last, Mr. Klavan's excellent world building skills bring the story to life, with his wonderful grasp of blending fantasy and reality.

The Wedding Chapel by Rachel Hauck ~ Review

The Wedding ChapelLucie's Review:

Jimmy Westbrook has loved Colette since high school. he built her a wedding chapel before he got drafted, but when he returned she was gone. Jimmy became a football coach mentoring many of the young boys in Heart's Bend, including Jack. But now Jimmy is facing pressure to sell the land that the chapel sits on.

Jack and Taylor had a whirlwind romance,  that leaves Taylor doubting if they can weather the storms their marriage faces.

The chapel is a well kept secret by many of the townspeople, and but when Taylor comes to photograph the chapel, and convince Jimmy to keep  the chapel.

Will they find the second chances that they are looking for?

A twisting tale, that comes in pieces, with fragments from the past and present, woven together and  made complete. it takes a while for the pieces to come together, and so for me it took a while for it all to connect and for me to care for the characters.

Overall, a story told through the years of forgiveness and second chances. I don't think I liked it quite as much as I liked her series about the Royals but it was a good read, though hard at times, and a slow start. Worthwhile in the end though.

Deadly Christmas Secrets by Shirlee McCoy ~ Review

Deadly Christmas Secrets (Mission: Rescue #4)Lucie's Review:

Harper Shelby doesn't want to be found, but Logan Fitzgerald isn't who she thinks he is, a member of HEART he is there to do everything in his power to protect her. After losing her job after a series of bad publicity following her sister's murder, she now lives outside a small town, making and selling homemade pottery.

When she finds out that there might be a possibility that her niece is alive, Harper makes new plans of her own forcing Logan to change the plans that he had made for he safety. Harper is forced to trust Logan, as they work together to find out who is after her, and what really happened to Amelia.

There is plenty of great interaction, as Logan and Harper get to know each other and learn to rely more on their common faith in God to help them find the truth. I loved how even though the situation was grave, they were still able to find moments of light, and moments to smile.

A fast paced book that was hard to put down, with a lot going on and plenty of surprises. Fantastic read from beginning to end!

A Sentimental Journey Romance Collection by Cathy Marie Hake, Kim Vogel Sawyer, Dianna Crawford, Joan Croston, Eileen Kelly Hake, Sally Laity, DiAnn Mills, Janelle Burnham Schneider, Lynette Sowell ~ Review

A Sentimental Journey Romance Collection: 9 Love Stories from the Memorable 1940s
Lucie's Review:

Tales of love set during WWII.

Some of the stories are stand alone, and some read like a series, like four of the stories that follow rag dolls and their journeys. It all begins when Paul Kincaid asks Rosemary to make him some dolls, and he uses them to carry valuables to help the Jewish children. And throughout the war, they bring people together, while bringing hope to the children.

There are stories of others who bravely risk their lives for others, following their faith, and trusting God for their safety. In Of Immeasurable Worth Paul Austin is dedicated to saving the treasures of Europe, he befriends a book shop owner and his daughter, taking a rare Bible to America.

A variety of stories, spanning both sides of the Atlantic, full of love, hope, and courage. I loved all of the stories, but didn't want to spoil them for you, thus the brief review :) An inspiring read.

Amish Homecoming by Jo Ann Brown ~ Review

Amish HomecomingLucie's Review:

Leah comes home at last, bringing her young niece, Mandy, with her. Leah has been the only mother that Mandy has known, ever since Leah's twin brother's disabling accident shortly after Mandy's birth, and his wife left them.

Leah never meant to leave the Amish, but when her brother left he ricked her into coming with him, and she stayed because Johnny and Mandy needed her.  She wrote her family every week, but the letters always came back unopened.

Ezra and Leah where childhood friends, and she could always depend on him when she and her brother had a falling out. But by the time that he realized that he wanted more than friendship with her, she was gone. Now that she's back, will he get a second shot at winning her heart?

Leah struggles to be at home back among the Amish, she has always kept the plain ways, but now that she is back her father refuses to talk to her, and Mandy longs for Philadelphia where her best friend lives.

I love how Leah's parents both welcome Mandy and shower her with love. And Shep is a great addition to the family, a service dog to Johnny, but also very protective of Mandy.

Ezra's brothers are very nice, and encouraging, fixing up is courting buggy and telling him to use it!

A fantastic book with great relationship building dialog, that shows the multiple emotions at play. Wonderful book about second chances and fresh starts, forgiveness, and repairing relationships. Definitely recommend :)

The Lassoed by Marriage Romance Collection by Mary Connealy, Angela Bell, Angela Breidenbach, Rebecca Jepson, Amy Lillard, Gina Welborn, Kathleen Y'Barbo, Rose Ross Zediker, and Lisa Cox Carter

The Lassoed by Marriage Romance Collection: 9 Historical Romances Begin After Saying "I Do"Lucie's Review:

Fun, fast-paced, and exciting, this is a terrific collection that I enjoyed every minute of!

The Substitute Bride is a poignant read, about Gwen Bradbury, who has always felt like an ugly ducking next to her sister, so she agrees to her mother's scheme to marry her to Lord Carlyle, instead of her pretty sister. Lord Carlyle doesn't find out about the switch until after the wedding, so he is understandably upset, so he leaves her alone at his estate, where she spends much of her time reading. But when a tree crashes into the library, they find themselves working together to save the books, and finally getting to know their spouse.

It was a fantastic story of Gwen and Carlyle, as they get to know each other, and Gwen begins to see herself as Carlyle begins to view her. I loved Gwen, and her personal journey throughout the course of this book.

Hattie and the Sheriff of Hitching Post, MT end up spending more time than they expected together when they find themselves lock together in a jail cell, in Mule Dazed. Plenty of humor, and surprises in this delightful read.

In The Sweetwater Bride Tanner Harden discovers the secret valley that Debba McClain has made her home since her father's death. She has gentled all the animals including the long horn bull. Tanner takes her home to his parents, and the bull follows them. A fun read, with great characters.

I liked the strong heroines, like in Bridal Whispers, A Highbrow Hoodwink, and Not So Pretty Penny, they are brave and sacrifice a lot, taking chances and trusting God.

And the men are pretty brave too, stepping up to help a lady in need of a little help, in stories like The Colorado Coincidence, and Railroaded into Love. Through everything Molly held fast to her faith, and becomes the perfect partner for Noah's ministry.

Two sides of a feuding clans find love in All's Fair. When a Davies and Kent get in a fight and face jail time unless the two families are joined by marriage, Jackson volunteers to marry Coral. And she is set on keeping her vows.

Overall, a well done, fantastic collection, with everything you could hope for in a western romance pretty much covered. Definitely recommend!

Whispers in the Reading Room by Shelley Gray ~ Review

Whispers in the Reading Room (The Chicago World's Fair Mystery #3)

Lucie's Review:

Lydia Bancroft finds her escape through her job as librarian, there she can forget about the daunting details of her life. After her father's death, her mother has been trying to wrangle her into marrying a rich man, who is not the kindest of men.

Sebastian Marks is a self made many who educated himself by reading every book he could get his hands on, he's had to make his own way from a young age, and now does well for himself running The Silver Grotto, a gambling den. He doesn't have a library card, but he comes to the library often, reading for a time then going about his way.

Lydia and Sebastian become unlikely friends, neither of them having ever truly had a friend before.

This is an interesting read with a lot of promise, but unfortunately I personally wasn't a fan of the bad language, drinking, gambling, and adult themes. Sebastian isn't a hero to be admired in my eyes, he doesn't seem to ever see that what he does isn't fair business, and Lydia doesn't seem to mind what his money can do for her until later on. I didn't feel that the characters grew very much as people and that most of their relationship seemed to be kind of inferred, and not shown through direct interactions, like it was mostly developed through thoughts in their heads.

One of the things I liked best about this book was Bridget and Vincent, and how they met and get to know each other.

Overall, a difficult review to write, because I really thought that I would like this book, as I have enjoyed other books by this author in the past, and I really wanted to hold out some hope and love it in the end. But I just didn't feel like I could ever really support the characters or appreciate the choices that they made. The writing style was engaging and swift, with great tension.

Beautiful Star of Bethlehem by Lori Copeland ~ Review

Beautiful Star of BethlehemLucie's Review:

A meandering Christmas story going from Christmas to Christmas, each of which feels the same for Arlene who lost her memory in a plane crash, that also killed her husband, Jack.

Her children come to visit her every year at the nursing home, and she has trouble recognizing them. She remembers that her first grandchild was born right before the accident, but she doesn't connect her with the little girl that visits her every Christmas.

Though bitter sweet, this is a heartwarming tale of friendship and family at Christmastime.  I loved how her family still visited her, and how she was able to help her children, even though she didn't remember everything, she was still able to give them advice. Her friends at the nursing home accepted her for who she was, and admitted that they don't remember everything either. A bittersweet Christmas novella.

Keeping Christmas by Dan Walsh ~ Review

Keeping Christmas
My Review:

For Judith and Stan this is the first Christmas alone, without the children or grandchildren around. And without them around it's hard for Judith to get excited about the rituals that make Christmas for them. One of her most treasured traditions is decorating the tree with the lovingly crafted homemade "ugly" Christmas Ornaments.

Will Judith and Stan have a Merry Christmas after all?

This is a sweet heartwarming read about an older retirement age couple who are in the predicament of being alone for Christmas, with their children miles and miles away.

I loved how Stan tried to help Judith, and even though he didn't completely understand at first. And also I really liked Judith's friend Bev, and how she tried to cheer up Judith.

Stan is a very loving husband, and even though it was hard for him to understand at first he loved her and showed her true love.

Overall, this was a simple and sweet read, a nice read, but also predictable. A very nice story about the importance of family at Christmas time.

The Sparkle Box by Jill Hardie and illustrated by Christine Kornacki ~ Review

The Sparkle Box
Review:

A sweet and heartwarming tale of a little boy who learns that it is better to give than to receive at Christmastime.

A lovely book, with a great message of celebrating Jesus' birth by giving the glory to Him, rather than focusing on what we can get out of Christmas.
I loved how Sam's family wanted to teach him to care for others and to glorify God.

The illustrations are lovely, and I loved that it came with its own sparkle box so that you can start the tradition in your own home. A lovely story to read as a family and to share with others.

A well written novel with a timeless message, and charming illustrations that tell the story of  Sam and his parents who have a sparkle box and fill it every Christmas, and open it on Christmas. Find out the secret of the Sparkle Box along with young Sam, and start the tradition of the sparkle box in your own home, (this book comes with a sparkle box just for you and your family).

A Refuge at Highland Hall by Carrie Turansky ~ Review

A Refuge at Highland Hall (Edwardian Brides #3)
My Review:

Penny Ramsey is a great help to her sister Kate, who is pregnant with her first child, and also foster mother along with her husband Jon to eight somewhat rambunctious children. But with the outbreak of war, the men are being called away to serve their country, and for safety the family returns to Highland Hall, the home of William and Julia.

When Jon brings his pilot friend Alex Goodwin home for a visit, Penny befriends him and they begin a correspondence.

In the midst of the tragedy of war, will Penny be able to help Alex regain his hope?

I love how compassionate and supportive Penny is of her family, taking on the large responsibility of helping Kate and her husband care for their eight adopted children. I loved how she welcomed Alex, and quickly befriended him, encouraging him in dark times, and never once shying away from being a true friend to those that mattered most to her.

Julia and William are raising Donald and Millie, but long for a child born of their shared love, but after many heartbreaks they struggle to hope.

Alex is a brave young man, who values life and fights to protect the ones that he loves. He is courageous and gutsy in the face of danger, he took pride in his responsibility.

A wonderful conclusion to a great series, it's sad to know this is the last one as I enjoyed getting to know so many of the Foster/Ramsey family, but it was good to catch up with them again in this book.
This is a terrific read with admirable characters, of substance and courage. Filled with action and faith, this is a book that makes you want to cheer for Alex and Penny. I definitely recommend the whole series!

God's Good News Bible Storybook by Billy Graham ~ Review

God's Good News Bible StorybookMy Review:

Contained in a padded hardcover binding, and filled with charming illustrations Billy Graham has put together a Bible storybook devotional for children. The words are taken directly from scripture, unless noted and defined by italics which denote a summary paraphrase rather than a direct quote. Each section is accompanied by lovely illustrations that capture the love and excitement. And at the end of each story, there is a devotional, with questions to discuss and think on.

This would be the perfect read-aloud Bible before bed book, with pictures and great devotionals that go along with each section. The devotionals cover topics like sin, obedience, redemption, forgiveness, friendship, God's love and desire for us to come to know Him, as well as how God can use even the most unlikely to bring about His will--and so much more!

Overall, this is a very well put together book that is meant to be cherished and re-read countless times over the years. It tells the story of God's Good News, from Creation to Jesus' death and resurrection, to the revelation revealed to John of what is to come. This would make the perfect gift to a special little person, and is also a book made to be shared. I would highly recommend this wonderful book.

The Golden Braid by Melanie Dickerson ~ Review

The Golden BraidMy Review:

Rapunzel has lived her life as an outsider, moving from town to town, with her mother, never staying in one place for too long. She dreams of learning to read, and making her own way in the world. When they are attacked on the way to their new home, a daring and brace knight, Gerek comes to their rescue.

Gerek is brave, but prideful. He is determined to do well and make a name for himself in order to prove his older brother wrong. But his plan may prevent him from seeing that God's best is right under his nose.

A enchanting and mesmerizing tale, fast paced, as I turned the pages it quickly became a book that I could't put down. I've been hearing about Ms. Dickerson's books for years, but until this point hadn't gotten around to actually reading one of her books. Though through the years I have collected a few that I'm very much looking forward to reading now.

Compelling, re-telling with a more realistic spin to it, I liked how Rapunzel was clever and also very brave, quick to learn and catch on. Gerek was a knight with strong convictions and ideas about how to reach the goals he had set for himself.

Overall, a well written and exciting read, filled with many interesting characters that brought the story to life. I looked up the other books that I have by this author and seeing that they area about some of my favorite characters in this story, like Lady Rose, and her children, so I'm very excited to read those books! A wonderful read that satisfied my craving for a good old fashioned fairy tale, I would definitely recommend this book to lover fairy tales, and adventure!

Every Girl Get's Confused by Janice Hanna Thompson ~ Review

Every Girl Gets Confused (Brides With Style, #2)Lucie's Review:

Katie Fisher is working at Cosmopolitan Bridal in Dallas, Texas and living with her Aunt Alva. But she still manages to make many trips home to Fairfield, to help with her grandmother's wedding to the Presbyterian Minister.

Brady is still managing his mom's bridal shop as he takes a break from basketball, but as time passes and his knee isn't healing as quickly as he would like he wonders what the future holds.

With a Doris Day themed wedding in the works and combating bad press the bridal shop has been receiving, not to mention Katie's ex-boyfriend Casey who wants to get back together, what's a girl to do?

The second book in a series, this book follows Brady and Katie in their bridal adventures. I like how Katie has a good relationship with her parents and how she trusts God with every season of her life.

I loved how every chapter of this book opened with a Doris Day quote, my favorite one was: Wrinkles are hereditary, parents get them from their children.

Overall, a great read filled with faith, family, and funny moments. I loved how it had characters of all ages, and lots of inter-generational interactions, and wonderfully entertaining and enjoyable read!

Christmas Undercover (Echo Mountain #4)Lucie's Review:

Sara Vaughn is an FBI agent on the trail of drug manufacturer, posing  as a mountain guide, in order to gather evidence. When she falls down a mountain side, Will Rankin is at the right place at the right time to help her out. He is a volunteer with the Echo Mountain Search and Rescue, he knows a lot about treating injuries, and surviving on the mountain, be he's never met someone so distrusting of him before.

Can Will help keep Sara safe, and will she ever be able to trust him?

I like that Will is a strong man of faith, he has two young daughters and he wants to do the best that he can by them. He feels protective of Sara and wants to help keep her safe from the men set on stopping her.

Sara has been alone most of her life and she's never had someone to trust before. And she is amazed at how careful he is to protect her and his children. As things go from bad to worse, will Sara find a faith to fall back on?

An action packed read, with admirable heroes and quite a bit going on. And I loved how Will never gave up on Sara, even when she wanted to be left alone. A wonderful suspenseful read.

An Amish Noel by Patricia Davids ~ Review

An Amish Noel (The Amish Bachelors #2)
Lucie's Review:

Emma Swartzentuber's father is determined to see Emma married to a good stable man before he dies, and he has a man in mind. But when Emma's childhood crush Luke Bowman comes back, rescuing Roy and Alvin the two boys that Emma is like a mother to, and then offering to help her father with the store, she isn't sure how to feel.

Luke has made his share of bad choices, and now he is finally ready to settle down, and he wants to prove himself to his family and to himself.

Will Luke find the place where he finally belongs?

I liked how Luke works with Roy and Alvin, and especially mentoring Roy encouraging his mind and his interest in mechanical things, while warning him of the risks and dangers of and English life.

I like how Emma and Luke got to know each other again by working together and helping with the children's Christmas program. She is wary of him, at first but sees how the boys like him.

Overall, this is a great story and I liked revisiting the Bowmans. A wonderful heartwamring tale of family and forgiveness.

A Thousand Shall Fall by Andrea Boeshaar ~ Review

A Thousand Shall Fall (Shenandoah Valley Saga #1)
Lucie's Review:

Carrie is the daughter of a newpaperman, but when the war starts everything changes for her family with her mother, 2 sisters, and herself, reduced to living in a single room. Longing her escape Carrie's 15 year old sister runs away with a peddler, leaving Carried worried, and their mother livid.

Carrie's mother sends Carrie to retrieve her younger sister, and so Carrie devises a plan to cross battlelines, but her plan doesn't go as planned and she finds herself arrested by Colonel Peyton Collier for impersonating an officer.

A fast paced adventure, that once you get past the rather interesting and a bit unbelieveable premise, makes for an entertaining read. I honestly didn't think Carrie's plan was a very good one to get her sister back, so the first few chapters I'll admit that I thought she was crazy. But as I kept reading the story really drew me in, and in hindsight I'd label this a sort of Civil War Cinderella Story.

The characters are vivid, and it makes for a fast paced read, that I really enjoyed after I got past her crazy plan. Well written and well researched, this book avoids the common pitfalls of a Civil War novel by being accurate, but not an endless list of facts and troop movements.

Overall, a wonderful read with great characters, and a smart heroine. I loved Aunt Ruth and the humor of the situations that they founds themselves in.

A Thousand Shall Fall: A Civil War Novel (Kregel, November 2015)

A story of love, hope, and healing set in the midst of the Civil War

Nineteen-year-old Carrie Ann Bell is independent and spirited. The only thing she really fears are the Union soldiers fighting against her Confederate friends. When her youngest sister runs away from home, brave Carrie Ann is determined to find her and bring her back. Disguised as a soldier, she sets off---only to find she's fallen into the hands of the enemy.

Her childhood friend Confederate Major Joshua Blevins has warned her against these Yankees: they're all devils, ready to inflict evil on unsuspecting young women. When Colonel Peyton Collier arrests her for her impersonation of an officer, it seems to confirm all her fears.

Soon, though, she finds herself drawn to the handsome, gallant colonel. He rescued her, protected her, and has been every inch the gentleman. Carrie Ann discovers that her foe has become her ally---and more than that, someone she could love. But the arrival of Joshua in the Union camp as a spy will test her loyalties. Will she protect someone who has been like family or be loyal to this stranger to whom she wants to offer her heart? When her world is being torn apart around her, whom should she trust?

Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, A Thousand Shall Fall is framed around compelling characters and a very romantic setting in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Andrea Boeshaar's extensive research guarantees historical accuracy and romance genre enthusiasts and Civil War buffs alike will enjoy the Christian perspectives on actual historical events.

The Holiday Courtship by Winnie Griggs ~ Review

The Holiday Courtship
Lucie's Review:

Janell is the schoolteacher in Turnabout Texas, and she is in the right place at the right time to help Hank who has recently gained custody of his niece and nephew after the death of their parents.

Hank doesn't want a wife, but he knows the children needs mother, so he asks Janell to marry him. But she refuses, so he asks her to be his matchmaker.

I love how Janell cares for the children and wants to do what she can to help them adjust their new situation. Especially bonding with his young niece, Chloe, who like Janell's sister, is deaf.

I like that Hank is serious about providing for his niece and nephew, and wants the best for them. He takes Janell's advice about bonding with the children and finds that he does love them, and they love him too.

Overall, this is a great story and I loved how we finally get to read Janell's story after reading about her in the backround of the previous books. Hank is a great man of strong faith, and though it takes him some time to figure out what is right for him. This a great story with great dialogue, I lied how they got to know each other through helping the children, and find it interesting that in such a small town they had never met before at church or something. Definitely recommend this book :)

Hand-Me-Down Princess by Carol Macado ~ Review

Hand-Me-Down Princess (The Brides of Bellas Montagnes #1)Lucie's Review:

Prince Malachi of Mevendia is determined to be different from his father, and stay true to his wedding vows, despite the marriage being arranged and the fact that he has never met Jessabelle before in his life.

Will the two royals survive the media or will it ruin their fragile marriage?

I liked both Malachi and Jessabelle.  Malachi is a sincere person, and he truly wants to make things work, he knows being married to him isn't what Jessabelle wanted and he does his best to help her and befriend her.

I liked how Jessabelle grew and gained confidence over the course of the book, learning to live a more public life with grace. And she and Malachi both rely on their faith to get them through.

What I didn't like was Lizbeth, and how clueless Malachi seemed to be to her scheming. It was kinda crazy that he didn't notice how much she was trying to sabotage him.

I liked how this book dealt well with their growing relationship, spreading the story out over a reasonable amount of time, as they learn to trust and depend on each other.

Overall, an enjoyable read that shows that love can grown in the harshest of climates. Though I really hated Lizbeth and Malachi's father--like, a lot! For fans of modern fairy tales.

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Hand Me Down Princess
CANDID Publications (August 31, 2015)
by
Carol Moncado

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

When she’s not writing about her imaginary friends, Carol Moncado is hanging out with her husband, four kids, and a dog who weighs less than most hard cover books. She prefers watching NCIS to just about anything, except maybe watching Castle, or Girl Meets World with her kids. She believes peanut butter M&Ms are the perfect food and Dr. Pepper should come in an IV. When not watching her kids – and the dog – race around her big backyard in Southwest Missouri, she’s teaching American Government at a local community college. She’s a founding member and President of MozArks ACFW, category coordinator for First Impressions, blogger at InspyRomance, and represented by Tamela Hancock Murray of The Steve Laube Agency.

 ABOUT THE BOOK

Prince Malachi Van Renssalaer of Mevendia is getting married. The problem? He’s never even met his bride. His father arranged everything, right down to the marriage contract. Malachi swears to himself that he will be nothing like his father in the ways that count - including his fidelity to his wife.

Jessabelle Keller would happily spend her entire life in obscurity, but her father once saved the life of a future king. Before he dies, her father is committed to seeing that king make good on his promise to have one of his sons marry her so she would be taken care of for life.

No sooner than Prince Malachi and Jessabelle return from their honeymoon, they find themselves dealing with both private trauma and the very public drama of groundless accusations from the press. Just as they begin to weave their fragile trust back together, a ghost from the king’s past arrives and threatens everything they’ve ever held dear.

Secrets have a funny way of coming out and this one could rip the faith of the country in their leaders to shreds. Malachi is determined to protect Jessabelle no matter what it takes, but will it ever be enough for her to not feel like a Hand-Me-Down Princess?

About the Book

Sweet New Adult Contemporary Romance Novella

How does a star fall?

Quickly. Completely. Unexpectedly.

Derrick Knolane escapes to Trinidad Head most evenings, avoiding his apartment and
planning for the day he'll break free of Humboldt County. Working in a music store might
be fine for a while, but it's far from the goal he had in mind when he got his college
degree. Not to mention the fact that his roommate is a jerk and his family won't stop
trying to run his life.

Then Brielle falls into his world.

She claims to be a star. Not from Hollywood, but from heaven. He thinks she's crazy.
Certainly delusional. Yet, he can't just leave her alone on the cliffs. So he takes her
home.

And his whole world falls apart.

A heartfelt and fanciful contemporary romance novella, How a Star Falls explores the
uncertain season of new adulthood and shows that sometimes the worst
inconveniences make for the best miracles of all.

This novella is available in the following formats:

2-hour unabridged audiobook ($6.95)
Paperback ($6.99)
Kindle ebook ($.99)

Fire and Ice by Mary Connealy ~ Review

Fire and Ice (Wild at Heart, #3)
          Lucie's Review:

I'd been waiting for this book for s long, so the day that it came in the mail, I picked it up and couldn't put it down, it is a wild west adventure that I won't soon forget.

Bailey Wilde is the oldest of the sisters and the one who has served the longest during the war, she has always tried to protect her sisters, but now that they are married Bailey's back to being alone. She's a smart rancher, building her cabin at the only entrance of a box canyon. But now the landowner won't leave her alone.

Gage Coulter is a smart man, and he doesn't want to barge into the canyon without talking to Bailey first, and he know that she isn't just barely missing him by accident, with her bullets.

Can Gage and Bailey work things out before things get heated?

I was surprised by how much I liked and admired Gage, I was prepared not to like him as a cold and overbearing land baron, not afraid of anyone. But he won my respect as a man of strong self-control, determination, and integrity, who is afraid of someone--his mother. He is smart, and willing to strike a deal with Bailey.

Bailey is a clever young woman, and does her best to manage, especially when around Gage's rather controlling mother.

Overall, this is a well written adventure about how sometimes two are better than one. Gage and Bailey are both rather independent, but they find that perhaps being alone isn't the best option. Full of mystery, adventure and humor this is a book that I couldn't put down until the very end.

The Amish Midwife by Patricia Davids ~ Review

The Amish Midwife (Lancaster Courtships #3)
          Lucie's Review:

Anne Stoltzfus is midwife and an avid gardener who sells her produce at a roadside stand. So when the neighbor's  goat get's into her garden, she is mre than a bit upset.

Joseph Lapp knows very little about babies, but he agrees nonetheless to take in his baby niece, Lucy. But running the goat farm and raising his young niece is taking it's toll and he needs help, so he asks his neighbor, Anne for help.

Will Anne and Joseph be a good team or will his rogue goats strain their friendship?

I loved this story and how Anne and Joseph work together despite their differences and Joseph's mischievous goats. Anne is hesitant to help Joseph because she is afraid that she will become too attached to Leah. But she wants to help.

Joseph is hardworking and really likes his job and raising goats, he know them all by name. He appreciates Anne, and all that she is doing to help him, as well as her compassion and caring for her patients.

Overall, this is an enjoyable read, full of faith, and humor along the way. I  really liked  the dialog and thought that it fit perfectly with the characters and situation. Sweet and funny at times this is a great read for fans of Amish fiction and romance.

The Berenstain Bears: The Very First Christmas by Jan and Mike Berenstain ~ Review

The Berenstain Bears, The Very First Christmas
          My Review:

I grew up with the Berenstain Bears, reading about the adventures of Mama, Papa, Brother, and Sister, and even remember a few of the books with young Honey in them. They are books that will always hold a spot in my heart, as they were some of the first books that I learned to read on.

So when I saw this book up for review, I knew I had to read it for old time's sake.

In this adventure Papa Bear tells the family the story of the very first Christmas, and how a Savior was born to the world.

A heartwarming, classic read for the whole family, that brings back memories of the past, and also a great one to share with future generations. Wholesome, and true to form, this is a wonderful addition to the legacy of Berenstain Bear Books, with charming illustrations, and a great lesson.

Murder Under the Mistletoe by Terri Reed ~ Review

Murder Under the Mistletoe (Northern Border Patrol #3)Lucie's Review:

Heather Larson-Randall and her son, Colin, have returned to take over the family farm. But the reason for their return is a sad, one, Heather's brother, Seth has died, but the circumstances surrounding his death are just not adding up. On top of that she's been receiving strange phone calls, and even catches someone lurking outside her house.

The someone happens to be Tyler Griffin, who works with the DEA and the IBETs task force, and he had been working with her brother to find out who was using the farm to ship drugs. Tyler and Seth had been getting so close, and Seth had been keeping a journal of everything going on, but Tyler doesn't know where he hid it.

Will Heather and Tyler be able to find the journal and bring Seth's killers to justice?

This was a great story, I really liked how Tyler worked to connect with Colin, despite thinking that kids wouldn't like him since he never grew up with a family. And he is a great supporter when the stress get's to be too much.

Heather's husband died while serving with the armed forces, and so she's been used to doing everything herself and being independent.

Overall, this is a great book with plenty of action and a lot going on, I loved the setting and the main characters, Tyler and Heather from the start. This book has plenty of mysteries to solve. All in all a great read!

Faith of Our Fathers ~ Movie Review + Giveaway

          My Review:

Two men take an unexpected road trip together to the wall, to see the names of their fathers who served together in Vietnam. But neither of them could have guess how it would change their lives forever.

An uplifting movie about faith, family, and our troops. John Paul is about to be married and has questions about his father, so he calls up his father's old friend, but ends up reaching his son instead.

To say that John Paul and Wayne were instant best would be a far stretch, even for the most spandex-y yoga pants on the market, in fact I wouldn't be exaggerating to say that shots were fired. But as they travel together they read their father's letters, and get to know their fathers in a completely new way, and see how their faith carried them through a war.

Well told, a way that blends the past and the present timelines, Faith of Our Fathers is a film that you will want to share with your family and friends. A well done and powerful film that really does a great job of showing the power of faith, as well as the bond between fathers and sons.

          About the movie:
John Paul and Wayne are two young men in search of their fathers.  Problem is...their fathers have been dead for 25 years.  Eddie and Steven are two young men in search of their sons...whom they've never met.  In 1969, Eddie and Steven are with their squad deep in the jungle of Vietnam on a five-day mission to retrieve fallen comrades.  They write letters to their wives, often mentioning their love for their sons, one, who is an infant and one yet to be born.  In 1994, John Paul and Wayne go on a five day road trip to the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC to see their fathers' names.  Along the way, reading those letters, they begin to get an understanding of who their fathers were and how they died.  Trials and mishaps, both funny and sad, complicate the road trip for the boys.  The horrors of war and the testing of faith manifest themselves for the young men in Vietnam.  Ultimately, in parallel stories - 25 years apart - the fathers and sons are bound together forever.
