Mist of Midnight by Sandra Byrd ~ Review + Giveaway

My Review:

Rebecca Ravenshaw returns from the mission field of India to find that another has come before her, claiming her identity...

This book grabbed me from the very first page, and swept away to Hampshire, not letting me go until the final page had been turned down. It's the first book that I have read within 24hrs in a long time, and I stayed up wwwaaaaayyyyy too late reading this one, I started it at 12:34am and kept reading until 3:47am when I decided to take a nap. Then first thing in the morning I was reading it again!

I loved absolutely everything about this book, from Rebecca's backround growing up in India, to the "chill" that wove itself into the tapestry of the storyline. I never knew who to trust, who might be lying to protect another, or who might want to cause Rebecca harm, and what they would gain.

My favorite, besides Rebecca, had to be Captain Whitfield. Strong, kind, yet with secrets and regrets in his past that haunt him, clever, honorable to his core, but mysterious and dangerous as well. I found myself looking forward to the scenes between Rebecca and Captain Whitfield the most, because of their inevitable connection and the mystery surrounding them both.

The setting was like that of a Jane Austen novel, yet with the darker twist of Jane Eyre woven into the undertones, making it everything and more that I could have ever wished for in a Victorian gothic novel. Mystery, romance, murder, faith, and wrongful impersonation, what more could you possibly want?

Overall, I cannot stop raving about Sandra Byrd's newest book, it's by far the best book I have read this year. I loved everything about this spellbindingly beautiful, and intrigue-filled novel from beginning to end. I already recommended it to my mother, and she can't wait to get started reading it. Highly recommend!

Thank you to Howard Publishing for providing me with a copy of this wonderful book to read and review.

About the Book:

In the first of a brand new series set in Victorian England, a young woman returns home from India after the death of her family to discover her identity and inheritance are challenged by the man who holds her future in his hands.

Rebecca Ravenshaw, daughter of missionaries, spent most of her life in India. Following the death of her family in the Indian Mutiny, Rebecca returns to claim her family estate in Hampshire, England. Upon her return, people are surprised to see her… and highly suspicious. Less than a year earlier, an imposter had arrived with an Indian servant and assumed not only Rebecca’s name, but her home and incomes.

That pretender died within months of her arrival; the servant fled to London as the young woman was hastily buried at midnight. The locals believe that perhaps she, Rebecca, is the real imposter. Her home and her father’s investments reverted to a distant relative, the darkly charming Captain Luke Whitfield, who quickly took over. Against her best intentions, Rebecca begins to fall in love with Luke, but she is forced to question his motives–does he love her or does he just want Headbourne House? If Luke is simply after the property, as everyone suspects, would she suffer a similar fate as the first “Rebecca”?

A captivating Gothic love story set against a backdrop of intrigue and danger, Mist of Midnight will leave you breathless.

My Heart Stood Still by Lori Copeland ~ Review

My Heart Stood Still (Sisters of Mercy Flats #2)Lucie's Review:

The second book the Sisters of Mercy Flats Series, but even if you haven't read the first  book in the series, you will be able to quickly catch on.

Anne-Marie and her sisters are on their way to jail, dressed as nuns trying to sell cattle they didn't own. But along the way, each of the sisters is rescued by a different man.

Anne-Marie's rescuer is Creed Walker, an Indian working for the Union Army. He rescues her because he thinks that she is nun, and becomes very upset when he finds out that isn't the case, and find himself in jail with her.
Come join Anne-Marie and Creed in their wild western adventure!

Filled with action, and plenty of misunderstandings along the way. I liked how Creed helped Anne-Marie realize the error in her "Robin Hood-like" ways. One of my favorite parts of the book was the relationship between Creed and his best friend Quincy, and how they went back and forth giving the other a hard time, which added plenty of humor to the story.

Creed is a strong and honorable hero, while Anne-Marie is quick witted and capable, and Quincy is a true friend tot hem both.

Overall, this was a wild west adventure to be sure. The only thing that I didn't really like was the dialogue between the bad guys, I kinda like to be surprised along with the main characters, so this was just mainly my personal opinion. A great read for fans of Lori Copeland!

Would-Be Wilderness Wife by Regina Scott ~ Review

Would-Be Wilderness Wife (Frontier Bachelors #2)Lucie's Review:

I really enjoyed this book, and from the beginning it reminded me of Seven Bride for Seven Brothers. The youngest brother sneaks a young woman into the back of the wagon, without his older brother, Drew knowing.

Catherine came to Seattle on the Mercer ship, she paid her own way and refuses to be pressured towards marriage. I liked the way that he handled being captured, initially she was upset, but she agreed to stay and care for the brothers' ailing mother and help them out.

I loved how close Drew was to his family and how his brothers, and sister finally convince him to court Miss Catherine.

I loved how were not only fantastic character relationships, but the action and dangers that they faced from nature.

Overall, this was an amazing book that I devoured in one huge gulp. I didn't want to put it down, and I didn't! I just really liked how genuine the relationships felt, not just with Catherine and Drew, but also with the whole family. Highly recommend!

Betting on Hope by Debra Clopton ~ Review

Betting on Hope (Four of Hearts Ranch Romance #1)
Lucie's Review:

I loved this book from beginning to end, and I didn't want to put it down in between!

Maggie and Tru had perfect chemistry, and I felt the spark between them when they first met. Tru bets Maggie that he can teach anyone to ride a cutting horse, so Maggie takes him up on his bet, thinking that even he will find it challenging to teach a city girl to ride.

I really liked how Maggie had a column where she tries her best to give hope to her readers, and answers every single letter personally. And she does her best to encourage them and show them that they can try new things too!

I really liked the sides stories and characters, especially Pops who the brothers of Four Hearts Ranch, do their best to include in he work.

The interaction between Maggie and Tru was really well done and I loved how patient, and straightforward Tru was while teaching Maggie to ride.

Overall, this is an excellent book with a "true cowboy hero", filled with action, horses, great themes, and well developed characters. Highly recommend!

The Trouble with Patience by Maggie Brendan ~ Review

The Trouble with Patience (Virtues and Vices of the Old West, #1)Lucie's Review:

Patience Cavanaugh comes to Nevada City, Montana to  fix up, and re-open the Creekside Inn left to her by her grandmother. The man that she loved is dead, and love is the last thing on Patience's mind. But when Jedediah Jones "The Hanging Lawman" becomes one of her boarders, it seems like a practical arrangement. He needs food and a place to lay his head for himself and his prisoners, while she needs a strong back to help her keep the place running.
But will they find more than they bargained for, with this arranged marriage?

This is a nice western romance, with a good setting and wonderful side characters. I liked the Jed, really admired Patience from the beginning, even if her didn't know how to express it at first. He is a man who has a strong believe in justice and the law, so he take his job seriously.

Patience is a strong woman, who knows how to help others, and also how to take her own advice when confronted with pain from the past.

Overall, this was a nice read, though a bit more on the predictable side. This is a story that tells of a small town and the life therein. So if you are looking for a nice western romance, it may be worth a shot :)

The Homestead Brides Collection: 9 Pioneering Couples Risk It All For Love by Mary Connealy, DiAnn Mills, Erica Vetsch, Kathleen Y'Barbo, Darlene Franklin, Carla Olsen Gade, Ruth Logan Herne, Pam Hillman & Becca Whitham ~ Review

The Homestead Brides Collection: 9 Pioneering Couples Risk All for Love and LandLucie's Review:

A wonderful collection of novellas with a common theme yet each one is different and diverse.

Some of the stories are about second chances and finding love again, with glimpses into life on the prairies of Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas, and highlight the harsh realities of surviving on the plain.

I loved how there were strong heroes like Lasso in This Land is Our Land and Cyrus in A Palace on the Plains. And great humor like in Homestead on the Range.

I really liked the preacher's wife in Flaming Star, and how she was such a good friend. I also loved the Scandinavian flavor of stories like  Proving Up & Waiting on a Promise.

Prairie Promises was one of my favorites, about a young man who comes to rescue his mother from the wild west and ends up finding the things in life that he didn't even know that he was missing.

Overall, this was a wonderful collection, filled with stories of strong women, that celebrate the pioneer spirit and the people who called the prairie their home.

The Outlaw Takes a Bride by Susan Page Davis ~ Review

The Outlaw Takes a BrideLucie's Review:

Sally has agreed to be a mail-order bride to a man by the name of Mark Paynter, little does she know that Mark is dead, and that his brother Johnny who is on the run from the law for a murder that he did not commit has assumed his identity. Now if that isn't a good set up for a story, I don't know what is!

Sally is a strong woman, who has had a tough life, with a difficult first marriage, yet she is willing to give marriage another shot. Mark was a good man, and she would have liked him if she had been able to meet him.

I liked that Johnny was respectful of Sally, and kept his distance, because he felt that what he was doing was wrong.

This book was a bit slow to start, but quickly picked up and was well worth the read. Sally and Johnny forge a friendship, and help each other grow as people.

Overall, this was a very good book, perfect for fans of mail order bride stories and a nice western romance. Definitely worth checking out :)

Accidental Empress by Allison Pataki ~ Review

The Accidental EmpressMy Review:

The Halsburgs are the reigning family, with and empire from Austria, Russia, and Germany, to Italy. So when Franz Joseph, the young emperor is looking to marry  his mother sends for his cousin Helene, a studious and quiet girl, to become his betrothed. Along with Helene comes her younger sister, Elizabeth "Sisi" who captivates the young emperor, which leads him to rescind his proposal engage himself to Sisi instead.
Yet the turmoil has only begun...

Based on a little known true story, this story is sure to captivate fans of the intrigue and betrayal of the Tudor and French courts, this will not disappoint. Lush with detail and culture, Ms. Pataki sweeps the reader away to a treacherous court and perilous position, with the young woman who won the emperor's heart.

Overall, a rich historical novel with many layers, that make the characters come to life. I have long been a fan of Tudor court novels and this was a nice change, full of history and peeks into the past. Now I want to know more about Sisi, and I'm hoping that there will be another book about her, I feel like the author hinted that one is coming, so I hope so!

Set-Apart Motherhood by Leslie Ludy ~ Review

Set-Apart Motherhood: Reflecting Joy and Beauty in Family LifeMy Review:

I pretty much grew up  reading books by Eric and Leslie Ludy in my teen years, and so when I saw this book offered for review I thought I'd give it a go. Now I will tell you now that I am not a mother, or even married, but I feel like this book doesn't have to be restricted to married people or mothers alone. After reading this book, I really felt that while this does talk some about children and learning to accept the chaos that at times is inevitable, it also talks about priorities in marriage and life.

This book would be a great read for expectant mothers, young wives, and engaged young women--of which I am none of these, yet I feel that this book would be perfect for some of my friends who are getting married and starting their families.

And while I can't really say that I will be applying all of the things in the book to my life in the near or even distant future, I still feel that I got some great things out of the book. I feel that it is a great topic for Mrs. Ludy to write about, as this is a book more reflective of where she and her husband are in their lives right now.

Overall, a great book definitely worth checking out, filled with encouragement, and Christ centered advice, great for wives, mothers, and engaged women.

The Cowboy's Forever Family by Deb Kastner ~ Review

The Cowboy's Forever Family
Lucie's Review:

Laney Beckett doesn't want anything to do with her late husband's rodeoing best friend, Slade Mckenna. She blames him and his rough and wild ways for her husband's accident.
Slade knows that Laney doesn't approve of him and his way of life, and that she blames it from the loss of her husband, but Slade sees a need, and figures that the least he can do is help her find her feet and teach her to take care of the ranch.
But what they find together may just surprise them both.

When this book started out it was a little tough to figure out what was going on, but once I had that straightened out it was a terrific read.

I loved that Slade just wanted to do his best to help Laney, and even when he over stepped his boundaries, he only did it out of purely noble intentions.

Slade is a new Christian who had recently accepted Christ along with Brody, Laney's husband, before the accident, and he struggles with what the "Christian thing to do" is, and instead of turning away from God in hardship, he finds his fledgling faith growing. He is hardworking, and changes a lot oer the course of the book,

Laney has been through a lot but she is determined to keep the ranch going like Brody would have wanted her to, and ever so slowly she begins to admire and respect the man that Slade ha become.

Overall, a well written western romance, sure to warm the heart, and put a smile on your face. I really like how Slade and Laney's relationship grew out of grudging friendship, and how they bot grow ad come to depend on each other. Definitely a great book for those who like cowboys in their romances :)

The Crawling Terror by Mike Tucker ~ Review

Doctor Who: The Crawling Terror (New Series Adventures, #55)My Review:

A small town is being over run with frightening insects of unusually large size, and not only that but they are attacking the population and slowly transforming the townsfolk into zombies.

Will The Doctor and Clara be able to get to the root of the problem and save the tow from the fearsome creatures?

Clara and the Doctor join together with the townspeople to get to the bottom of the mystery, surrounding the enormous insects and the reclusive scientist who may be behind it all.

This book is set (according to Clara's timeline) somewhere in the middle of season 8. Full of adventure, and brimming with creepy creatures, this is a book sure to put doctor who fans on their toes!

I liked how the side characters were well developed and added a depth to the story that really made all the difference.

Overall, this is a book great for fans of the hit TV show, the content is much as you would expect from the show, with some mild language sprinkled in. A well done adventure, which makes me wonder how they possibly choose episodes from all the wonderful ideas!

Bella's Gift by Rick and Karen Santorum, with Elizabeth Santorum ~ Review

Bella's Gift: How One Little Girl Transformed Our Family and Inspired a NationMy Review:

I remember the first time I heard of the Santorum family, I was watching C-SPAN  during the Faith and Family Coalition in Iowa as the GOP hopefuls shared their views on everything from foreign policy to tax reform, and social issues. Mr. Santorum shared stories of his father who came to America with a dream, but the story that touched my heart was the one he shared about Bella. His respect for life at every stage touched me, it was so honest and heartfelt, and his daughter, Bella was living proof of his family's dedication and love. So when I saw that I had the opportunity to read this book, I jumped at the chance.

This book tells not just Bella's story, but the story of how God was preparing them and their hearts to love and defend Bella. Their pain at the loss of their son, and their joy with every one of Bella's triumphs. Told through alternating chapters written by Rick and Karen, this book chronicles the miracle of Bella and how she changed their lives, and touched the hearts of America.

Bella beat so many odds, she was considered "not compatible with life" yet she surpassed every expectation, well beyond the hours she was originally given to live. She is now thriving at seven years old, a miracle. Karen and Rick fought for her life and right to proper medical care many times, loving her unconditionally, thanking God for every day with her.

This is a heartwarming, powerful read, honest, real, that I felt showed a huge part of who the Santorums are and their respect and value of all life. I really loved how they talk about how happy Bella is, and while there are many things she may never do, she brings joy and is living her life to the fullest. An inspiring read, and in depth read about family and unconditional love that I read late into the night and had trouble putting--actually I didn't put it down! Definitely a book I'd highly recommend!

Astor's Review:

When Kirra Jacob's uncle goes missing during one of the most grueling races on earth, the famed Iditarod, it is up to her and her search and rescue partner, Reef McKenna to find out what happened to the missing musher, before it's too late...

Kirra and Reef have been constantly on each other's nerves ever since they were young. But now, together they must face the greatest challenge of their lives and quite possibly their careers! They are in a race against the clock to put a stop to the horrific events threatening to unfold.

Action all the way through, with touches of humor, and interaction. I loved how everyone was working together as a team throughout.

Overall, a fantastic book, and I'm sad to see this series come to end. But since it had to end, I'm glad that it did it with a bang! I don't want to say too much and give anything away, but I will tell you this, you will NOT want to miss this series. I have loved every moment of heart pounding suspense with the McKenna's and can't wait to see what this author has in store next!

23 Blast ~ Movie Review + Giveaway!

My Review:

Based on a true story, 23 Blast tells the story of Travis Freeman a high school football star, who wakes up one morning with an infection that renders him blind. With the support he begins to find his way again navigating life without his sight. His coach reaches out to him offering him a spot on the team playing center, and with the help of his best friend Jerry, and plenty of determination, Travis surprises his teammates, family, and friends.
But will it be enough to get them to the championships?

A fun football film, that tells the remarkable story of Travis Freeman, a young man who beat the odds with the help of his family, coach, and friends.

This was a pretty well done film, I think that my favorite part was the friendship between Travis and Jerry. Jerry was the only one who treated Travis pretty munch the same, after he became blind, and he was there for his friend when he needed him, even though he had demons of his own.

Overall, this was a wonderful film, about determination, and the support of family and friends. My only note is that this film is definitely more appropriate for teens and adults, and isn't a movie meant for young children as there is some brief language, implied language, and drinking. But that said, this is a powerful film of perseverance and bravery, definitely worth giving a chance!

How to Catch a Prince by Rachel Hauck ~ Review

How to Catch a Prince (Royal Wedding, #3)Lucie's Review:

When Nathaniel Stratton finds out that his brother, Stephen, was secretly married five and a half years ago, he sends Stephen to America to make things right.

Corina Del Rey is an heiress, who works for an online newspaper. But being an heiress doesn't mean that her life is easy. Her brother died in Afghanistan, her father is hardly ever home, and her mother refuses to leave the house.

When Stephen shows up with the annulment papers, Corina has one request, more information about her deceased brother.

But when Corina's job sends her to Brighton to cover the premier of a new movie about Brighton, will this turn of events remind Stephen and Corina of why they married in the first place?

Corina and Stephen have each come a long way since their seemingly ill-fated marriage so any years ago, Corina has grown in her faith through the grief and loss in her family. I loved how welcoming Queen Campbell and Princess Susanna were towards Corina. I also really liked Stephen's relationship with his bodyguard, because he does his job well, yet isn't afraid to point things out as they are to Stephen.

Great interaction, and character development throughout the entire story, keeping it interesting and engaging. There were humorous moments, and plenty of fun. I liked that Corina and Stephen had a shared connection of not only their marriage but how her brother was in Afghanistan, and Stephen had served there. One of my favorite things was seeing Susanna and Nathaniel and catching up with them and their lives after happily ever after :) A great fantastical, yet modern romance sure to sweep you off your feet!

Remember the Lilies by Liz Tolsma ~ Review

Remember the Lilies
Lucie's Review:

Irene and her aunt, Anita, are missionaries in the jungles of the Philippines, held captive in a Japanese prison camp.
Rand is a suave and smooth American, used to women falling every which way under his spell.
Do a humble missionary and an overly confident womanizer have a chance at a future together a midst the turmoil?

This book was a bit of a slow starter for me, but as I read it picked up speed and soon I didn't want to put it down--I just had to know what would happen!

I really liked Anita, because she showed great strength and didn't let being blind keep her down. She was like a mother to Irene, and mentored her with faith.

There was great interaction between Rand and Irene, I liked that Irene didn't fall for him right away, and didn't fall for his practiced charm. Rand really grew a lot over the course of the story, and the more he lost the more he found, and realized the things that were really important.

Overall this is a poignant read, set during WWII in the Santo Tomas Internment Camp. Through it  all  loved how it all came together, and how they fought to survive the war. A wonderful deep running novel of wartime.

About the book:

Remember the Lilies (Thomas Nelson, February 2015)

Rand Sterling wants nothing more than to reopen his nightclubs once the war ends. Love Unexpected by Jody Hedlund ~ 2 Reviews!

Love Unexpected (Beacons of Hope, #1)
My Review:

Goodness gracious, Ms. Hedlund just gets better with each book!

Emma Chambers and her brother Ryan are left to fend for themselves after their steamboat is sunk by pirates just off the shore of Presque Island.
Emma doesn't want to be a burden to her brother as he tries to provide for himself, so she accepts the proposal of the local lighthouse keeper, Patrick Garraty who recently lost his wife, and is struggling to care for his young son while balancing his duties in the lighthouse.
But Patrick has secrets from his past that threaten to rob him of happiness with his newfound family...

Set on the coast of Michigan, this book has it all, heartfelt heroes that you can't help but cheer for the whole way through, romance, mystery, secrets, pirates, an adorable little boy, and so much more!

I loved Emma and Patrick, they both made the best of the situation, and had their reasons to be hesitant, yet through it all they were dedicated to their marriage and learned from their mistakes. Patrick is perfect tortured hero, and served as a wonderful example of how one truly becomes a new creation in Christ.

Josiah was just so stinkin' cute! Even when he was being bad he captured my heart. I also really liked Ryan, Emma's brother, so imagine my excitement when I found out that he is going to be the subject of the next book in the series! Why can't it just be June already?

Overall, a compelling and heartfelt read, from the beginning to the very end. I loved everything about it! I can't wait to tell all my friends that this is the book that they need to be reading!

Lucie's Review:

A wonderful book that I just couldn't put down!

Emma is a hardworking young woman, I liked her determination and how she was willing to keep trying and learning when things were far from smooth.

Holy Bill was quite the character, yet a true servant of God and great mentor to Patrick. I loved how he encouraged Patrick in his new life, and gave him hope.

Patrick wasn't perfect, but he always gave his best effort, and was dedicated to his job and his son. I loved how patient and gentle he was with Josiah. He was observant, and appreciated Emma's efforts even though he didn't always say so outright.

This is a terrific read, full of interesting characters, set in a fearsome and a beautiful place. There was fantastic dialogue and interaction between the characters, the plot moves quickly, and as the end drew near, I didn't want it to end! Definitely a book that I'd recommend!

Thank you Ms. Hedlund for letting me read your fantastic book and share it with my mother!

Team Us: Marriage Together by Ashleigh Slater ~ Review + Giveaway

Team Us: Marriage Together
My Review:

Team Us stresses the importance of a couple being on the same team. And while that might seems like a fairly simple thing, it is much easier said than done.

In this book Ashleigh takes about the obstacles to building a solid team, using stories and tips from her own marriage. From resolving conflicts, finding joy, building the team, dealing with loss, and family, Ashleigh and Ted talk about staying strong and having each other's back through the good times and the bad.

Overall, this book is one that is designed to be for engaged or newly married couples. A great book to read together when preparing for marriage. I'll be honest, I'm single so this book probably wasn't written for someone like me but I still found it interesting and helpful :)

About the book:
176 pages / Forward by Dr. Gary Chapman (author of 5 Love Languages)
What are you agreeing to when you say “I do”? When a couple promises “I do,” they agree to more than just a shared last name, a joint bank account, and no more dateless nights. This husband and wife duo forms a new team. “Life together” becomes their mantra. Nothing can come between them. At least, that’s the plan. But then real life sets in. With it come disappointments and frustrations. If the couple isn’t intentional in their day-to-day interactions, that once enthusiastic “we” can slowly revert to “you” and “me.” Before long, the couple’s left wondering what happened to their team spirit.
Team Us: Marriage Together offers couples practical ways to cultivate and strengthen unity in their marriages. AuthorAshleigh Slater shares from her own marriage as she presents couples with realistic ideas on how to foster cooperation, deepen commitment, and exercise grace on a daily basis.
“Finishing your marriage story well is definitely within your reach, no matter what your history tells you.”
