Pursued by Lisa Harris ~ Review

Pursued (Nikki Boyd Files #3)
Lucie's Review:

When the plane that Missing Persons Investigator Nikki Boyd is on crashes, she and the lady sitting next to her, Erika, survive but in all the confusion Erika disappears. When the FBI shows up she asks them about Erika. The FBI hires Nikki to find Erika, who turns out to be an important witness in an upcoming trial.

Will they find her before it's too late?

Nikki and her team, Gwen and Jack, are on the case. Gwen is a whiz iwth computers, and Jack is a great guy who works well with Nikki and always has her back.

Tyler is also back, he understands Nikki's need to help out, and is very supportive of her work. There isn't a ton dialog between them, since a lot of their relationship has been established in the previous books.

Nikki is a strong heroine, and woman of faith. She is brave but also vulnerable, she is dedicated, cool under pressure, resourceful, and treats everyone with consideration. I love her relationship with Tyler's son, Liam.

This is a fast paced read, and everything unfolds over the course of just a few days. There are a lot of surprises, in this intense and dangerous search. Nikki clings to her faith to keep her going. Fantastic addition to the series! Highly recommend reading this series in order.

Sandpiper Cove by Irene Hannon ~ Review

Sandpiper Cove (Hope Harbor, #3)Lucie's Review:

Lexie Graham, Chief of Police in Hope Harbor, get's called out to check out a vandalism, one of a seemingly connected series, which is where she meets Adam Stone. Lexie is a busy mom juggling her job and raising her son, Matt. But when circumstances brings Adam and Lexie together, Lexie's mother sees a prime opportunity for matchmaking.

Adam Stone works construction and mostly keeps to himself. He came to Christ while he was in prison, and has been on the right side of the law since his release. He never planned on falling for a cop.

Can a string of vandalisms bring two heart together?

Adam rescued a dog he found hurt on the side of the road, and named him Clyde, even though Clyde still limps he doesn't let that slow him down. When the vandals hurt Clyde she arranges for her mom and Matt to watch him while Adam works. Lexie also asks Adam to help mentor a young man, encouraging him to pursue things other than crime.

I like the way that Adam get's down to Matt's level and helps him connect with Clyde. Luis is a great friend to Adam who gives him sound advice, and helps him to be more confident.

Lexie sees Adam for who he is now and doesn't hold his past against him, I like that she admires him for who he is now. She is a great mom, and has a compassionate heart.

This is a great book, I love the whole feel of the community and how they come together and come behind one of their own when times get tough and rumors fly. This is a wonderful read about two people who gave up on finding love. I loved the dialogue, the characters, interactions, and just revisiting Hope Harbor in general. Clyde is a lovely dog, who keeps reaching out even though he's been hurt in the past, and he helps Adam to do the same. All of the residents are so lovely, and there are ones that you just don't forget even though they play a seemingly small role. Fantastic read!

Second-Chance Cowboy by Carolyne Aarsen ~ Review

Second-Chance Cowboy (Cowboys of Cedar Ridge)
Lucie's Review:

Morgan Walsh  returns to his hometown so that he and his son, Nathan, can be close to family after the death of Nathan's mother. Morgan is a veterinarian and he will be partnering with the local vet.

Tabitha Rennie works as a veterinary assistant, she came to town to fix up her dad's place so she can sell it to pay off his debts. Tabitha and Morgan dated in high school, and things ended badly. But Tabitha is a good horse trainer, and Morgan inherited a horse named Stormy that he would like her to train.

Will coming back to their hometown give them a second chance at love?

Tabitha has been trying to make up for her father's mistakes her whole life, but even though he's gone his reputation still lives on. She is great with children and animals alike, and bond instantly with Nathan. I admired Tabitha for her resilience despite her past, she's hardworking and resourceful.

Morgan wants to build a good relationship with his son, and he really appreciates Tabitha's help, and he's not the only one who is getting used to having her around. Morgan encourages her to be herself and stop living in the shadow of her father's sins.

I love how this book brings Tabitha and Morgan together, working in close proximity to each other, working together . This is a enjoyable read, I really enjoyed seeing the couple from the last book, Morgan's brother Cord and his wife Ella, again in this book, along with their dad, Boyce. Great dialogue and character interaction. Definitely a great read!

Know Who You Are by Tim Tebow and A.J. Gregory ~ Review

Know Who You Are, Live Like It MattersMy Review:

A devotional/Bible study for middle grade students to high schoolers, especially directed towards homeschoolers for use in a curriculum. This book has writing exercises, as well and encourages journaling.

I like how the book encourages young people to find their true identity in Christ and to strive to live for Him, not just to please others or society. It encourages trusting God for everything, building edifying relationships, and doing big things for God. Tim shares stories from his growing up days, and the present, in 36 devotions/chapters.

While I used to be a homeschooled teen myself back in the day, I kind of thought it odd that this book was so specifically targeting homeschoolers. Not that writing a book for homeschoolers is a bad thing, but I thought that this was a fantastic book that would appeal to a larger audience then just homeschooled teens. In fact it makes a great gift for that young person in your life, wondering where their life will go and stressed about the future.

I loved the personal stories that Tim shares, talking about his inspirations, lessons, and struggles. He speaks with an innate respect for his family and his passion for others is wonderful to see.

Inspiring, engaging, and encouraging this is a fantastic faith-filled devotional for teens. This book is written to encourage reflection, thought, and ideas. Definitely recommend, especially for those in middle school or in the first few years of high school.

King's Blood by Jill Williamson ~ Review

King's Blood (The Kinsman Chronicles, #2)
My Review: Picking up right where the last book left off, the five kingdoms are now at sea in search of their new home. Sar Wilek struggles to unite his people in a more and more polarizing community, where many worship pagan gods and spirits. Trevn and Mielle must fight for their love, while Wilek finds hope in loving again. Charlon is even more desperate than ever before to mother a royal child in order to place her claim on the throne. Kal struggles with the nightmares of his past, while Hinck and Grayson spy in the treacherous dens of evil in hopes of bringing light to their kingdom.

Since it had been a year since I had read the last book, it took some time for me to remember again who everyone was, which was a bit hard at first as it jumped from the perspective of one character to another. But once I was all caught up on everyone it was hard to put down. I really liked how much Wilek has grown and matured in this book, he sees things more clearly and is becoming the leader he was born to be.

There is definitely a lot going on, and so many characters to keep track of, plenty of action, and lots of great growth of character. I think my favorite characters to read about in this book were Grayson, Hinck, and Kal. Grayson is brave, adventurous and daring. He wants very much to be of help to the Armanians, as well as be true to his upbringing. Hinck is a good spy, though seemingly a pawn in a bigger game, his wheels are always spinning, and he is loyal to his friends. Kal is Wilek's ever faithful shield who is keeping secrets that have haunted him from the war, he is a man of honor and strength to the very core of his being.

There is deceit and treachery at every corner, and conspiracies abound for control of the throne. There is so much that happens throughout the book, it is a thoroughly engrossing read. I think that Charlon's passages are some of the best in the book, because whilst she is against Wilek and Trevn and everything they stand for, yet her story is compelling and well done. There is so much that happens in the book, that it is impossible to even generalize much of the plot. This is a great read for fans of fantasy, though you definitely need to read the books of the series in order. Highly recommend, but for adult readers because of adult themes in the book.

Amish Refuge by Debbi Giusti ~ Review

Amish Refuge (Amish Protectors #1)
Lucie's Review:

Miriam Miller is being pursued by the person who killed her mother and abducted her sister, she sees a light on in a farm house and makes it there just in time. Several days before her family was stopped by flashing lights and instead of being helped, they were attacked by the man with a snake tattoo, and now Miriam is running for her life.

Abram Zook grants Miriam sanctuary, and his sister helps Miriam disguise herself by giving her a cape dress, and helping her to do her hair. Abram is a widower, he still blames himself for his wife's death in childbirth 3 years previous.

I liked that Abram is there to help Miriam on several occasions when "The Snake" comes snooping around, he tries to convince her to reach out for help, when she is scared and doesn't know who to trust. Abram grudgingly admires Miriam's determination to help her sister Sarah. He stands firm and defends Miriam even though he believes in peaceful problem solving.

I love how this story brings together two people who never would have met under normal circumstances. And Miriam comes to realize that she doesn't miss the material things in her former life. She sees how Abram and Emma live out their faith and is inspired by them. I'm hoping there's a sequel because there were some questions at the end of this book.

Emma is a great friend to Miriam, she sees how much Emma loves the little boy, Daniel, who delivers their milk every day, and she suspects that Emma loves Daniel's widowed father too.

True To You by Becky Wade ~ Review

True to You (Bradford Sisters Romance #1)Lucie's Review:

Genealogist Nora Bradford has a passion for history and after being burned by love once three years ago, would rather read about romance in the past.

John Lawson is a former Navy SEAL and national hero, he runs Lawson Training Incorp. where he teaches people how to respond to emergencies. He hires Nora to help him find his birth-mother because he has recently received an unsettling health diagnosis about an inherited condition.

Nora and John work together to find clues when the normal channels fail. Nora knows what she is doing, and is intelligent, articulate, organized, friendly, and compassionate. She has a way of putting strangers instantly at ease, which comes in handy when they are asking for help in their investigation. She has two sisters, Willow and Britt, Willow is a model, while Britt owns an operates a candy shop.

John is a real-life hero, with a book and a movie written about him, but he believes that the real heroes are the ones that didn't make it home. He is a strong Christian and share his faith in his book, he has a great relationship with his parents, and has been dating Alice. So he feels guilty when he can't help noticing little things about Nora that make him smile.

I like both Nora and John, they both share a strong faith, but they realize that they ave been holding on to things that they need to surrender to God. There is also a lot of great humorous dialog between Nora and John, and quite a bit going on. I loved the ending, and this was a great book, romantic, and well worth the read!

About the book:

It's the exciting start of a brand-new series by a contemporary romance fan favorite!
After a devastating heartbreak three years ago, genealogist and historical village owner Nora Bradford has decided that burying her nose in her work and her books is far safer than romance in the here and now.
Unlike Nora, former Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor recipient John Lawson is a modern-day man, usually 100 percent focused on the present. But when he's diagnosed with an inherited condition, he's forced to dig into the secrets of his past and his adoption as an infant, enlisting Nora to help him uncover the identity of his birth mother.
The more time they spend together, the more this pair of opposites suspects they just might be a perfect match. However, John's already dating someone and Nora's not sure she's ready to trade her crushes on fictional heroes for the risks of a real relationship. Finding the answers they're seeking will test the limits of their identity, their faith, and their devotion to one another.

Sweetbriar Cottage by Denise Hunter ~ Review

Sweetbriar Cottage
Lucie's Review:

Noah and Josephine are shocked to find that they are still married after filing for divorce a year ago. Noah is living his dream running a horse ranch, and Josephine is running a barber shop. Josephine goes up to the mountains to get the divorce papers signed at last, but when a snowstorm hits they are stranded together, and as they use their wits to survive, they relive moments from their relationship and childhood.

Josephine had a troubled childhood, and bounced around leaving rubble in the rearview, she comes to a new town for a new start where she meets Noah. They marry, but their relationship only prompts her to bury her secrets and pain even deeper, where it grows. Josephine has been slowly turning her life around, seeking answers, and trying to help other girls not to make the same mistakes that she did.

Noah has lived in a small town his whole live, working construction and serving his country. He is smitten with Josephine, and overlooks some red flags on the road to marriage. Noah has been living his dream with his horse ranch, but holding on to his bitterness, becoming a hermit.

Though well written and compelling, it delves deep into the characters into what brought them together and broke them apart. It was a tough book to read, because of the difficult things in Josephine's past and the hurt that she went through, seeing the present and the past and how it all came together. A good book for those who like emotionally tension filled reads.

An Awakened Heart by Jody Hedlund ~ Review

An Awakened Heart (Orphan Train, #0.5)
My Review:

Christine Pendleton is a spinster, who has just lost her mother, she is devoted to volunteering at the Centre Street Chapel. Christine sees the physical needs of the weary women and children who attend the services and wants to do something to help them improve their lives and leave prostitution behind. So she approaches Reverend Guy Bedell with her idea to help the women find respectable work.

Guy is beginning to wonder if it is time to move on from the Centre Street Chapel and find a new ministry, so he prays for a sign. When Christine approaches him about helping the women find respectable jobs, he is hesitant, but when he sees her devotion and compassionate heart, he begins to believe that maybe this is where God wanted him all along.

Will they be able to weather the storms ahead in order to provide a safe haven for the women and children barely surviving on the streets of New York City.

A short story novella that opens Ms. Hedlund's newest forthcoming Orphan Train Series. I  loved Christine right away and my heart went out to her, her confidence is shaky at first, but she is so clever and wants to show others the love of Christ. I admired her willingness to sacrifice her own comfort for strangers in order to give them a way out of prostitution.

We also get to meet Elise and her siblings, who are orphans living in an overcrowded flat with their uncle, threatened with being thrown out onto the street everyday. The first full length novel in this series will tell her story.

Guy is passionate about his work, but he has become disheartened as his message appears to be falling on deaf ears. He is decisive and knows what he wants, I liked how he admires Christine and her devotion to the less fortunate.

Overall a great introduction to the characters of this brand new series. I loved reading Christine and Guy's story.

The Writing Desk by Rachel Hauck ~ Review

The Writing Desk
Lucie's Review:

Two parallel stories of young women generations apart.

Tenley Roth is the great-great-granddaughter of Gordon Phipps Roth, and she received the prestigious Roth award for her first book, and she's under a lot of pressure to finish her second book, but she's plagued by severe writer's block. When her estranged mother contacts her, Tenley decides to go to Florida to support her mother, Blanche,as she goes through chemotherapy, instead of going to Paris with her live-in boyfriend.

Jonas Sullivan comes to Grove Manor to pick up an old desk, but Tenley begs him to leave it because she is convinced that it will help with her writing. And as she writes she finds her story and wonders if the handsome carpenter will become a part of it.

In the Gilded Age, Birdie Shehorn, dreams of being a writer, but she is born to a life of wealth and privilege. She wants to pursue a career in writing but her parents are arranging a marriage for her instead. They have arranged for her to marry Alphonse, who is a notorious playboy flirt. But when she sees the man that she based her story on from a summer in England, her hopes soar until she learns that Elijah is engaged to another as well. Will Birdie find the freedom to follow her heart?

I like that both Jonas and Elijah are men of integrity and faith, which is why they can only offer friendship. Elijah is honor bound to marry for money to save his family estate, while Jonas holds back because he knows that Tenley is engaged even though she doesn't wear the ring and hasn't said yes.

I think Birdie is my favorite character because she holds onto her faith and stands up for herself when everything seems to be against her, refusing to accept her mother's manipulation and accepting that Elijah must keep his word. Her wedding is filled with many surprises and I like how the book shows snaps of her life afterwards as well.

Tenley begins her journey of faith, and Jonas encourages her to read the Bible she found in the stuck drawer of the desk. She has to face up to choices she made in the past and move forward. And I loved Jonas he is an absolute gentleman.

I really liked Birdie's story, Tenley's was a bit slower to start, but picked up quickly once she got to Florida. A great read that entwines two stories generations apart, and the choices that change two young women's lives forever.

Peace in the Valley by Ruth Logan Herne ~ Review

Peace in the Valley
Lucie's Review:
Trey Walker Stafford is a Country Music singer who sings and writes faith-filled songs of hope, and of love that lasts. He is called home because his father needs a liver transplant and he is the best match. Sam Stafford tries to talk Trey out of donating, but Trey is determined to stand by his word. Sams asks Trey to help out their neighbor, Lucy.

Lucy is far from starstruck when she first meets Trey, considering that he ran a  stop sign and caused her to swerve off into a ditch, losing all the flowers she was going to take to market, and flipping her van upside down. He offers to make amends by getting her a new vehicle, and continuing to help out.

But it will take more than a friendly smile and a new truck to win Lucy over.

Lucy is a widow with 4 children under her care, she works hard on her farm to make ends meet, growing flowers and Christmas Trees, fighting against nature as the buildings fall into disrepair.

Trey helps Lucy clean up her farm, and charms her three children. I love how he teaches her sons, Cade and Cody about being men, and quickly becomes one of her daughter, Belle's favorite people. He's not afraid of hardwork, but she is reluctant to trust him, and isn't interested in his fame or money.

I loved the friendly banter and quick wit between Lucy and Trey. Lucy fits in with the Stafford and even asks Elsa and Angelina for help with her teenage step-daughter, they suggest that she get a job helping at the horse ranch.

I really admired Trey, he is a man who appears to have everything, but is still haunted by his past. He is a genuine guy who doesn't mess with drugs, booze or women. He's surprised by how much he wants to win Lucy and be there for his children. Lucy has her own past to deal with, she has had to be strong and self-reliant, and has trouble believing that Trey isn't just too good to be true. Full of humor, I loved seeing the Staffords all together, their great dialog and easy ribbing. I loved every minute of it, highly recommend this book and anything by this wonderful author!

Journey Toward Home by Carol Cox ~ Review

Journey Toward Home / Measure of a Man
Lucie's Review:

Judith tries to make the best of a tough situation when she is abandoned in the middle of the desert on her way to join her uncle in New Mexico. She disguises herself as a boy, and get's picked up by some cowboys, who invite her to ride with their outfit. When it is revealed that she is a girl the Bradleys invite her to stay and help take care of Charles' wife Abby, and help with the children.

Jeff Bradley is the one who invites Judith to join them, and as he gets to know her he wonders if he will be able to live without her.

Jeff is a man of faith, and he even helps the new preacher out when it becomes clear that the preacher doesn't know much about what the Bible really says. Jeff is kind and hardworking, though he can be impulsive, he deeply cares about his family.

Judith is great with the children and always willing to lend a hand and help where needed. She quickly befriends the Bradleys and fits in pretty quickly.

A sweet western romance, with great characters. Also there is a bonus sequel that follows Lizzie as she is faced with a decision between two men vying for her attentions.

An Unlikely Mother by Danica Favorite ~ Review

An Unlikely Mother
Lucie's Review:

Flora Montgomery desperately wants to overcome her reputation as the stuck up town gossip, she's turned a new page in her life, and wants to help others instead. She volunteers with her church to serve the miners at the mining camp. When a abandoned French boy, Pierre, captures her heart, she is determined to help the miner who rescued him take care of the boy.

George Baxter remembers Flora from their earlier days in Denver when they walked among the same social circles. He is investigating his inheritance because his mine is losing money, and he wants to know why because his family's finances are in an unstable condition and his brother-in-law is trying to keep George on the outside.

Will the young boy who has captured their hearts bring Flora and George together?

Flora really wants to turn over a new leaf and leave her past behind her, she is great with Pierre and because of her education she knows French and can talk to him. She's hurt people in the past, and is working hard to show that she's changed. She is thoughtful and compassionate, and really is making strides towards turning her life around.

George finds that he knows very little of his family's financial security and he wants to know what is going on at that mine in order to provide for his mother and sister, as well as for the safety of the miners. And even though he doesn't know much French, he and Pierre get along really well and Flora is helping them to communicate more. He wants what is best for Pierre, and is doing what he can to find his father.

Overall, a enjoyable read, with conspiracy, romance, I loved seeing how far Flora has come and how she has taken to heart the preacher's sermons and wants to live her life for Christ now.  Pierre is really adorable. Perhaps a bit slow to start but it picked up as it went along, with everything going on at the mine and George's secrets. Enjoyable romance about second chances, and turning a new leaf.

For Love and Honor (An Uncertain Choice, #3)
My Review:

Lady Sabine is an admirer and collector of rare art, when she hears that a nobleman is selling pieces from his rare collection she and her grandmother travel to a praise his pieces. But her grandmother has matchmaking on her mind. But Sabine has a secret that she hides because she fears that it will brand her as a witch in some people's eyes, will she ever believe herself worthy of love?

Sir Bennett finds himself in dire need of gold to pay back his brother's gambling debts. He is loathe to part with any of his treasured collection, but he needs to pay the debts or lose Maidstone Manor, so he decides to take his mother's advice and consider marrying into wealth. But will he lose his heart in the process?

Bennett comes home to find that his home is under threat by Lord Pitt, to whom his older brother Aldric owes many debts, he must pay or lose his home. Bennett knows that though he is the younger son, he must step up to protect his family home, he isn't keen to marry for money, but it seems that it could be the only way. Bennett is responsible, honorable, and an admirer of rare relics. He sees beauty in things that others do not, and he wants to do right by those in his care.

Sabine knows that she is no great beauty, and she worries that her deformity renders her unlovable, so she finds joy in appreciating the beauty in works of art, treasuring their history and meaning. Sabine is witty, with a wry humor, she loves to learn the history of the beautiful pieces that she admires.

Bennett and Sabine, share many common interests, I liked their interaction, and how comfortable they were in each others presence. Bennett is ever the gentleman, and I loved how he was able to break through Sabine's walls.

Sabine's grandmother is quite the character, with glimmers of mischief in her eyes, she loves her granddaughter fiercely and wants only what is best for her.

Overall, an engaging, fast paced tale, with a climatic ending. I loved the interaction between Bennett and Sabine, and how found a partner to share the things that they loved together. A well built world of romance, chivalry, and noble character. A great read for fans of medieval fiction!
