 Review:

After receiving a chilling phone call moments before her sister's fatal car crash, Madison knows that Leah's death wasn't an accident. Police constable Tucker Reed, Madison's high school sweetheart is placed on the case, can they catch the killers before their deadly pattern continues?

An action packed read, that starts on a sad note. Her sisters death brings Tucker back into Madison's life, as she struggles to make sense of the twisted web that her sister was trying to uncover. I liked Madison and Tucker's relationship, and how Tucker encourages her to not give up on her faith. They have great interaction and chemistry throughout.

Overall a well written, and highly entertaining read, with great characters and emotional depth. Madison is going through a lot of tough things, dealing with a lot of loss, and I really liked how Tucker was there for her and supportive throughout. There is a lot going on, the plot is well balanced, between the strong backstory and the current danger. A fantastic fast paced read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Darlene L. Turner is an award-winning author and lives with her husband, Jeff in Ontario, Canada. Her love of suspense began when she read her first Nancy Drew book. More from Darlene

The Hidden Staircase, The Secret of the Old Clock, The Sign of the Twisted Candles—these were just some of my favorite Nancy Drew books. I couldn’t get enough of them growing up! My family often saw me with my nose stuck in one of Nancy’s many tales. When I was finished with those, I’d sneak my brother’s Hardy Boy books and devour them too. This is where my love of writing and of a good mystery/suspense began.

Creating stories in the romantic suspense genre was a natural journey for me. I had always wanted to be a policewoman after watching Charlie’s Angels (they even kicked butt while wearing high heels…what could be better than that?!), Cagney and Lacey, Police woman, Murder She Wrote, etc. My love for all-things-mystery carried into my adult life. Who doesn’t love Sydney Bristow and Kate Beckett?

I enjoy creating strong female characters in a law enforcement role. Madison Steele fits the bill head on as she works to bring down a ruthless pharmaceutical company. While she has nerves of steel, I also wanted to make her vulnerable. In the beginning Madison loses her long-lost sister in a heart-wrenching crash. One she knows was not an accident. This thrusts her into a deadly pursuit of the perpetrators with her estranged high school sweetheart, Tucker Reed, by her side.

I wrote this book during the tough year our world faced living in the unknown. Madison and Tucker are stuck in their own fears but eventually find hope. Hope in the unknown and hope in knowing God is in control and with us—no matter the circumstances. We just need to know where to look.

I hope you enjoy reading Madison and Tucker’s story as much as I loved crafting it. I’d love to hear from you. You can contact me through my website www.darlenelturner.com and also sign up for Darlene’s Diary newsletter to receive exclusive subscriber giveaways.

Under the Texas Mistletoe : A Trio of Christmas Historical Romance Novellas // by Karen Witemeyer

Review:
A Texas Christmas Carol - A clever and completely charming Texas take on the Dickens' classic. An utterly delightful read with engaging characters with names that are fun twists on their inspirations.

Eben is a smart businessman, with really great ideas. He is a clever man, but likes to keep people at a distance with his gruff exterior. I loved how Felicity challenges Eben, and draw him out.

Such a wonderful twist on a traditional story, with strong faith that points to the true meaning of Christmas.

An Archer Family Christmas - The holidays are hard for Cassie and Jim Archer, but when a stranger shows up in need it just might be the answer to prayers.

A heartwarming story of faith and family that finds all the of the Archers together for Christmas. I loved seeing all the couples together for Christmas, as well as getting to know the people at the neighboring boarding school better as well like Myra and her family. An exciting, action-packed read, with strong themes of faith and family.

Gift of the Heart - A widow puts up a treasured broach for collateral on a loan from a wealthy land-owner to help her and her daughter make it through their first Christmas in a new home.

Ruth is a hardworking mother, and the last thing that she wants to do is ask for help, she is a great mother to her young daughter.  Naomi is so cute, and I loved how outgoing and friendly she is. Bo is impressed by Ruth's work ethic and charmed by Naomi's honest innocence and accepting nature.

A heartwarming romance, with an adorable little girl, I enjoyed the characters and the Texas setting of this re-telling of the Biblical story. A highly enjoyable read.

Overall, an excellent collection of Christmastime novellas from one of my favorite authors, with familiar faces and familiar timeless tales told in a fresh way. An excellent gift for Christmas or anytime, I read the whole book in one sitting, and you won't want to miss it!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Review:

The inspiring new documentary from the Kendrick Brothers about the power of a father.

A collection of true stories about growing up with or without a father, and how that changed them as they in turn became fathers, and how they view their Heavenly Father. Heartfelt and honest, with a variety of different perspectives and insights, featuring Tony Evans, Jim Daly, Stephen Kendrick and more!

Engaging and well edited, the interviews are well placed, and I enjoyed hearing each of the heartfelt stories of triumph and heartache. I'm not typically the documentary type, but this was as engaging as a screenplay, and I can see why this movie was close to their hearts. Definitely, an inspirational film to share with the family, that points to the only perfect Father.

With so many people counting on her to complete the project, giving in to old feelings is a distraction neither she or Erik can afford, and they both need to keep watch. Review:

Action packed, with a riveting storyline and well developed characters that I could cheer for all the way through.

A well built backstory makes for the perfect canvas for this thrilling adventure to unfold, as secrets are revealed and the danger mounts. I loved the close knit comradery between Erik's family, and how supportive they are of each other throughout. Kennedy has worked hard to get where she is and continue her mother's important work, her life hasn't been easy and she is fighting to pursue what she loves. I liked that it explored the crossroads that she has found herself at, as well as the chemistry between Erik and Kennedy.

A well written suspense that I didn't want to put down, I loved the twisting, non-stop plot and the surprises along the way. This book as a lot of layers, ad the rich backstory really adds to everything coming at Erik and Kennedy from all sides. The book is really well researched, and I appreciated the attention to details that made the story come together. There is so much going on, yet the action is easy to follow, and the characters are very well built. Definitely would recommend this book for al fans of Christian Suspense!

The Gentleman and the Thief by Sarah M. Eden // Review

Review:

The second installment of the Penny Dreadful Society Series, finds Hollis Darby smitten with music teacher, Ana Newport, a young woman from a society family that fell on hard times.

A fast paced romantic mystery with charming characters that blends Hollis and Ana's story along with the mysterious, and hilariously haunting tales of the Penny Dreadfuls. I especially loved the one about the human boy living in a school for ghosts!

This was such a fun read with great characters and stories within the story, I loved seeing characters from the previous book like Elizabeth and Fletcher. I can't wait to read the next book about Donnelly! Enjoyable and entertaining, a light-hearted read set in Victorian England.

Husband Auditions by Angela Ruth Strong // I Read with Audra Tour, Review and Giveaway

How far would you go to find the perfect husband? All the way back to the 1950s?

In a world full of happily-ever-after love, Meri Newberg feels like the last young woman on the planet to be single, at least in her Christian friend group. So when she's handed a strange present at the latest wedding--a 1950s magazine article of "ways to get a husband"--she decides there's nothing to lose by trying out its advice. After all, she can't get any more single, can she?

Her brother's roommate sees the whole thing as a great opportunity. Not to fall in love--Kai Kamaka has no interest in the effort a serious relationship takes. No, this is a career jump start. He talks Meri into letting him film every silly husband-catching attempt for a new online show. If it goes viral, his career as a cameraman will be made.

When Meri Me debuts, it's an instant hit. People love watching her lasso men on street corners, drop handkerchiefs for unsuspecting potential beaus, and otherwise embarrass herself in pursuit of true love. But the longer this game goes on, the less sure Kai is that he wants Meri to snag anyone but him. The only problem is that he may not be the kind of husband material she's looking for . . .

With droll comic timing, unbeatable chemistry, and a zany but relatable cast of characters, Angela Ruth Strong has created a heartfelt look at the reality of modern Christian dating that readers will both resonate with and fall for.

Review: A thoroughly modern, old fashioned romance.

The last single woman standing in her friend group, Meri has always dreamed of marriage and a family of her own. An outdated list of ways to get a husband provides the perfect opportunity for Kai to get material for a demo reel and for Meri to truly say that she has tried it all.

An engaging and highly entertaining read, with spot on humor that shows that the author knows her audience well. I loved the fun-filled original premise, with a hero and heroine that we can cheer for, I loved the dialogue an easy-going friendship between Kai and Meri. I especially loved Meri as a relatable heroine as she struggles to not give up on her dream.

Overall, a endearingly humorous read with great interaction between the characters, filled with faith and heart. Meri is a quirky everywoman, I admired her strong values as well as her honesty with herself and growing confidence. Kai is fun loving and mysterious, struggling to take that next big leap in his career. I loved uncovering layer after layer of his character as the story progressed. You will not want to miss this highly entertaining, heartwarmingly hilarious Christian romantic comedy. Definitely recommend!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Rahab's Courage by Naomi Craig // Celebrate Lit Tour, Review and Giveaway

Book:
Rahab’s Courage

Author: Naomi Craig

Genre: Biblical Fiction

Release date: August 17, 2021

 About the Book

A scarlet cord tethers one ruined woman to the salvation of mankind.

Harboring two fugitives in a city slated for destruction, Rahab has one small chance of escape. In exchange for their safety, she bargains for her own. Their agreement rewards her courage, and she flees Jericho and a life of prostitution for a new life among the people of Israel. Never again will she have to depend on anyone—especially men.

Except Salmah won’t take the hint.

High ranking soldier and leader of the tribe of Judah, Salmah is determined not to repeat his parents’ mistakes. He will keep the Lord’s commandments. Rahab’s growing faith fits right in with phase one of his plans: find a wife who loves the Lord and settle down in the new land.

Rahab finds shelter and meaning in the Lord’s ways until her past comes back to haunt her. As her new faith is put to test, she finds herself alone. Isn’t that what she’d always wanted?

With her courage waning, only the Lord can turn Rahab’s life around again, but will He do it before she loses everyone and everything that really matters to her—to her heart?

 Review:

An intriguing take on one of the most extraordinary women of the Bible. A well written read that handles the at times difficult subject matter with grace, to tell a story of love and redemption. I think that the story does a good job of imagining the struggles to fit in with a new people and tribe as Rahab and her family did, with steady chemistry between Rahab and Salmah.

A wonderful start to a new series, though at times slow in pace, I admired Rahab's commitment to leaving her old life behind. And Nathan is a good friend to both Salmah and Rahab.

Overall, a well done debut, with strong themes of faith and forgiveness, as well as love. A great read for fans of Biblical fiction and romance.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

More from Naomi

Matthew 1:4b-6a (NKJV)

Nahshon begot Salmon.  Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse,  and Jesse begot David the king.

On the brink of war and conquering the Promised Land, The Israelites stand fierce and determined, ready to see God’s victory. This time they will not waiver.  This time, obedience will be their theme. But it wasn’t always that the Israelites stood with resolve as strong as Jericho’s impenetrable walls.

Rewind forty years. The Israelites have just been delivered from slavery in Egypt. 12 spies were sent into the land and brought back a good report. There were bountiful crops peace and giants.

Nahshon, as the leader of Judah (Numbers 2:3), should have been influential in his tribe’s decision to trust the Lord—especially since Caleb one of the two who trusted, was from Judah. Yet nobody believed. They all grumbled. So instead of what should have been a quick journey, it took forty years.

And the entire generation couldn’t enjoy the benefits of trusting God and His promise.

Enter Salmah.

He sees the penalty of his father’s disobedience. It shapes his life he adheres to the ways of the Lord. Plague after disobedience hardens his resolve. He will obey the laws of the Lord so it will go well with him in the new land.

So what is a man with this moral stature doing with a Canaanite? A harlot? Every sordid detail that makes up Rahab goes against his moral fiber.

But faith.

Faith that was spoken about all the way into the New Testament. Rahab steps out in sacrificial faith to a God she doesn’t yet know, for strangers who have no reason to trust her.

As such, the Lord honored her faith. As He does when you and I step out on that limb because we’ve felt that stirring in our soul.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.

Not only did the Lord spread His mantle of protection over Rahab, He also saw fit to include her in the lineage of His Son, Jesus.

Rahab’s Courage is a love story. A story of stepping out in faith. Of changing expectations of yourself and others. Of how the Lord can redeem and use any who are willing to put off the old and become that new creation.

***The scripture is clear that Rahab is a harlot. Due to the nature of this life, this story addresses prostitution, rape, and post traumatic stress. Please use caution with younger readers and if these subjects would act as a trigger for you. If Rahab’s Courage was a movie, it would have a rating of PG-13

The Wrangler's Ready-Made Family by Lacy Williams // Celebrate Lit Tour, Review and Giveaway

About the Book

Book:  The Wrangler’s Ready-Made Family

Author: Lacy Williams

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release date: August 10, 2021

Susie is a desperate young mother with another baby on the way. Her late husband left her nothing but his bad reputation. She has no money and is too ashamed to return home to her family. When she is trapped alone during a snowstorm with a stranger and the baby coming, her only choice is to rely on him.

Boone came west to find healing for his tuberculosis. He never expected to find himself trapped with a lost young widow. Or how fast he could fall for her and her two little ones. But it doesn’t take long for his secrets to come to light.

After everything she’s suffered in the past, can Susie ever trust another gambler?

Click here to get your copy!

 Review:

Widowed and pregnant, Susie accepts Boone's proposal of a marriage of convenience to give her young family security, but will Boone's secrets be their undoing?

A western romance of new beginnings and second chances. Susie has already been through a lot of heartache with her first husband, a man who broke her trust over and over again. She carries shame from that relationship, but has fond hope through her faith and I admired how she tried to make the best of every situation, working hard to care for herself and her daughter.

The title of the book is a little misleading in that Boone isn't a cowboy or wrangler of any kind. Boone is a gambler, who has lived most of his life in the city, he is intelligent and resourceful. He is an honorable man despite the stigma of his profession, he takes care of his new family and is supportive of Susie throughout.

Overall, a western romance of fresh starts, faith, family and forgiveness. I liked both Susie and Boone, and the natural growth of their relationship throughout the story. Carrie is so adorable! A highly enjoyable read!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Kindness of a Stranger

I don’t know about you, but I love watching videos where something is going wrong and a stranger steps in to save the day. Dog caught in the Thames and can’t get out? Stranger wades into the water to save him. Someone in line at the grocery store and doesn’t quite have enough money for their needed groceries? Stranger steps in and pays the difference.

I have a story like that of my own. My children like to play at our neighborhood park after school pick-up. Everything seemed normal until it was just about time to go and my eight-year-old daughter walks up with a nosebleed. I haven’t carried a diaper bag in two years and I have no tissues in my purse. I’m trying to keep tabs on my four-year-old because she’s running around, oblivious to anything else going on. My two older kids are off with friends and I can’t see them but I can hear their voices nearby.

And several moms who were also watching their kids play at the park rushed over to help me. One mom had gauze in her daughter’s backpack because her daughter sometimes gets nosebleeds at school. Another mom had baby wipes so I could wipe off my daughter’s hands. Another mom rounded up my four-year-old so I didn’t have to worry about her while I was taking care of the older one. I left the park *not* in a complete panic because these moms that I don’t know took care of me. They didn’t have to. But they stepped in simply because I needed help.

That’s what happens in The Wrangler’s Ready-Made Family. After experiencing a stagecoach crash and being snowed in and stranded together, hero Gil Hart shows his true colors by helping Susie, a young mother with a baby on the way. Susie’s been burned before and this is maybe the *only* situation that would’ve allowed her to open up and see Gil for who he really is. Of course, that’s only the beginning of the story.
