Three Little Words by Melissa Tagg ~ Review

Three Little Words (Walker Family, #0.5)Lucie's Review:

It's been 10 years since Ava lost Ryan. When Ava goes to her old college reunion she meets up with her nemesis Seth Walker, where they exchange contact information and begin a correspondence.

Seth is following his dream of returning to his hometown and restoring an old building into a restaurant. When Ava doesn't get the new job she was hoping for, Seth invites her to Maple Valley, IA.

I loved the interaction between Seth and Ava, even after Ava comes to Maple Valley they continue to correspond through email yet keep their friendship in check because Seth has a girlfriend back in Chicago.

Overall, this was a wonderfully unexpectedly rewarding read, about when to hold on and when to let go.

I purchased this book myself and then chose to review it.

Secret Refuge by Dana Mentink ~ Review

Secret RefugeLucie's Review:

A tangled web of mystery, where everyone is not what they seem to be...

Keely Stevens is raising her young niece as her own. Her Aunt Viv, runs a daycare, so she watches her when Keely is at work.
When Tucker, Keely's sister's ex boyfriend, returns suspicions begin to flare again, and old hurts are uncovered.

I really liked Keely's friend Mick, he is very protective of her and Junie. And insists on helping her find out the truth, as well as sleeping outside her house in  camper. He feels guilty for what happened so many years ago, but will he accept the forgiveness freely given?

This was a very good, well written read, with wonderful characters that had me constantly guessing. Yet it also had plenty of heart with Keely and Junie, and the friendship that blossomed between Keely and Mick.

Overall, a great read, full of mystery, and chilling suspense.

Daughter of the Regiment by Stephanie Grace Whitson ~ Review

Daughter of the RegimentLucie's Review:

Maggie is a tall, strong, capable young woman, who grew up alongside her brothers, Jack and Seamus. She's never fit in with the "Southern Belles" of Missouri, and never had a girl she could call her friend.

When her brothers join the army, they leave her with the farm. But marauders attack, she is barely able to fend them off, saving her Uncle Paddy.

When Maggie hears that her brother has been put on the wounded register, so goes to him. And due to circumstances beyond her control Maggie ends up staying with the regiment, where she mends shirts, and cares for the captain's dog.

I liked John Coulter, he's a sergeant in the army, and he is impressed by Maggie, and her gumption, especially after she shows her metal by bringing ammunition to the men, when they are caught unawares without it.

Overall, this was a well written read, very well researched, and I loved how there were so many characters. The beginning was slower, and a bit on the choppy side, but once it got going, I really enjoyed it.

Wagon Train Reunion by Linda Ford ~ Review

Wagon Train ReunionLucie's Review:

It's been six years since Abby broke up with him and married a wealthier man, they never thought they'd see each other again, but then they joined the same wagon train.

Abby has lived through a lot of disappointments in life, when her husband died leaving her without any funds. Yet Abby has stayed strong, she knows she doesn't know a lot about cooking, or life on the range, but she is willing to learn and determined to make it.

I really liked Emma, who is Ben's sister, and she is a good friend to Abby, and encourages her to help others.

Ben is understandably cautious around Abby at first, but when he sees her kindness and determination, he remembers why he loved her the first time. I liked how he was always willing to help others out.

Overall, this was a lovely story. I liked the setting of a wagon train, and I thought the story was well paced. I loved how this showed the challenges of being on a wagon train along with the friendships and bonds that were forged through the fire of a life changing experience.

The Tomb by Stephanie Landsem ~ Review

The Tomb: A Novel of Martha (The Living Water)
My Review:

This book explores Martha in a completely new light, along with the hurts and responsibilities that made who she was.

I loved how it explored the relationships between Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. I really liked the way that Lazarus was portrayed, his faith, and love for his family, along with the events leading up to his death.

I've read Stephanie Landsem before, and I'm always so amazed at how she takes a story that I know so well, and makes it fresh. It's so crazy because I think I know what is going to happen, but I don't...

Martha really captured by heart as the woman, who tried so hard yet fell short, she was basically the virtuous woman from Proverbs 31. Yet she, more than anyone knew her own faults.

Overall, a compelling read from beginning to end, that illuminates so many people that I thought I knew, and I came to love them in a completely new way. I'm not sure if I liked some of the liberties that were taken with Martha's past, but it did make for a poignant and compelling twist.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

A word from the author:
I write historical fiction because I love adventure in far-off times and places. I’ve traveled since I was a teenager—backpacking through Germany and Eastern Europe, studying German in Salzburg, eating gelato in Italy, and riding camels in Morocco were some of the highlights. Travel kindles my imagination, fuels my love of history, and introduces me to one-of-a-kind characters. It’s the best kind of research.

When I can’t travel, I read. I love fiction, of course, but I’m often found behind a stack of history books or searching the web for historical tidbits. How people lived together, worked, and what they ate (I love food!) is usually what catches my imagination. No matter where or when we live, people are more alike than they are different. I love to find the similarities between our lives and those of the men and women of the ancient world.

I make my home in Minnesota with my husband of 22 years, four children, three fat cats, and a tortoise named Moe. When I’m not writing Biblical fiction, I’m feeding the ravenous horde of kids and their friends, volunteering at church and school, battling dandelions, and dreaming about my next adventure – whether it be in person or on the page.

ABOUT THE BOOK

In this captivating retelling of a classic biblical story, Jesus shocks the town of Bethany with Lazarus’s resurrection from the dead, leading Martha—a seemingly perfect woman trapped by the secrets of her past—to hope and a new life.

Everyone in Bethany admires Martha—the perfect Jewish woman. She feeds and clothes her loved ones, looks after the family farm, and meticulously follows every precept of the Pharisees’ strict laws. But Martha is hiding a secret. At her sister’s marriage feast, she gave her heart and her innocence to a young musician who promised to return and marry her, but instead betrayed her love and abandoned her.

Seven years later, only two people in Bethany know of Martha’s secret sin: her brother, Lazarus, and Simon, the righteous Pharisee to whom Martha is betrothed. When Lazarus falls ill, Martha is faced with a choice: send for Jesus to save her dying brother—risking the wrath of Simon who threatens to betray her—or deny Jesus’ healing power and remain trapped in her tomb of secrecy and lies.

Meanwhile, on the shores of Galilee, Isa roams the wilderness, tortured by demons and knowing only that someone is waiting for him. When he is healed by Jesus, he finds that seven years have passed since his descent into madness. Isa journeys home to Bethany only to find he is too late to win back Martha’s love.

When Martha risks all to heal Lazarus, will Jesus arrive in time, or will he—like Isa—come too late?

Serving Up a Sweetheart by Cheryl Wyatt ~ Review

Serving Up a Sweetheart: A February Wedding Story (A Year of Weddings Novella 2, #3)Lucie's Review:

A lovely story from beginning to end, it captures the attention quickly, and I loved the characters.

Meadow runs a catering business, and caters for many weddings in the area, but when her roof of her kitchen collapses, and she can longer stay in her home, she has nowhere to prepare the food for her catering business.
Colin comes to rescue, much to Meadow's distrust. Back in highschool he played a horrible prank on Meadow, along with his cruel then-girlfriend, Blythe. Colin has grown since his high school days, and jumps at the chance to make things right with Meadow.

I loved the interaction between Colin and Meadow, she is suspicious of him at first,  but as time goes by she begins to appreciate his friendship and depend on him.

I loved how Meadow has a big heart for the disadvantaged teens, and she encourages them. I think that I knew that I liked this book as soon, as Meadow and Colin recognized each other!

Overall, a fantastic read. Definitely a sweet story well worth the read.

Dauntless by Dina L. Sleiman ~ Review

My Review: A fast paced adventure about a young woman, Merry, and her loyal band of children, that draws comparison to tales like Robin Hood.

Merry does her best to protect and provide for the  children in her care, even if those means are not always completely by an honest day's work. Timothy Grey is a the right hand man of  Lord Wyndeshire, and he has pledged  to bring down The Ghosts of Farthingale Forest.

A well written medieval tale, with a strong heroine. I loved getting know each of the children, through Merry's eyes, as they came into their own, and discovered their skills. Each child was well developed and completely endearing.

I really liked how there was some mystery to the characters, like Merry's past and what had happened to her that had brought her to where she was, I found that very interesting!

Overall, this was a wonderful adventure well worth the read, and engaging all the way through, until the very end. Highly recommend!

Spy of Richmond by Jocelyn Green ~ CFBA Tour & Review

Lucie's Review:

An novel awash with rich history, I felt like I learned so much by the end of the book about what was going on during and after the Civil War. Like that there really was a spy network set up by Mrs. VanLew, and that many exciting plot points were inspired by true events!

Sophie Kent never set out to become a spy. But in her pursuit of freedom for those trapped in slavery, she is always looking for ways to "do more."

There is an excellent mix of fictional and true life characters. I really liked Dr. Lansing who is a prisoner at Libby. And I liked how I recognized many of the characters from the previous books in the series, even though this is a great stand alone novel. I liked how they brought back Bella and her husband, Abe.

One character that I guess you could say that I loved to hate, was Sophie's horrible sister Susan, who was just so terribly bitter and scheming. She was just terrible, and to some effect, I felt like there was no real reason for her to go to the lengths that she did to hurt other people.

I really respected the restraint that Harrison shows in his relationship with Sophie. And I really came to like him.

Overall, this a well written saga, and I loved the heroine, and how she shows courage countless times, depending on her friends, and God to see her through. A well done historical novel.

I received this book from the publisher in return for an honest review.

A Heart's Disguise by Colleen Coble ~ Review

Heart's Disguise, ALucie's Review:

The first in a six part series, A Heart Disguise introduces Sara Montgomery, whose fiance, Rand Campbell, was killed in the Civil War. So at the urging of her family she accepts the proposal of Ben Croftner. But after she finds that rand is still alive, she breaks her engagement to Ben and Rand takes her to be with him where he will be stationed in Fort Laramie.

I'll be upfront, I'm not sure I like the 6 part format. I feel that it is just too short! It was well written and easy to read, but it was over much too soon, and I have a sinking feeling that things are going to get much worse before they get better for poor Sara!

It is a good start to the series, but I simply feel that breaking this story into 6-parts it just too many. I think maybe a number like 3 or 4 might have been more fitting, but that's just me. But I will definitely be waiting for the net installment, so I can find out what will happen next!

About the books:
We are excited to team with Thomas Nelson and ColleenCoble to take you back to Colleen's very first story.
After the unexpected death of her brother, Colleen felt a wake-up call to pursue her writing dream. The Journey of the Heart series was born with her brother serving as the inspiration for the hero. The story is the re-imagining of what her brother might have experienced in his beloved Wyoming if he'd lived there as a frontiersman in the 19th century.
Released in six installments (short, 128 page books), the Journey of the Heart series reads like one epic book.

Coast Guard Courtship by Lisa Cox Carter ~ Review

Coast Guard CourtshipLucie's Review:

Braeden Scott is a Coast Guard, slightly disappointed to be stationed near a Virginia coastline small town full of redheads. But when a misunderstanding brings the feisty Amelia Duer into his life, he begins to wonder if putting down roots might not be as bad as he thought...

Amelia has raised her nephew ever since his mom died after losing the battle to cancer. So I really liked how Braeden quickly bonded with little Max, saving his life, and even teaching him to swim. I loved how he was a heroic, honest, and honorable man in every part of his life.

I loved the relationship between Amelia and Braeden, Amelia is all about family and roots, and she is really close to her family, and let Braeden into her life, very straightforward and genuinely.

This is a wonderful book, with a quick hook, fast pace, and funny with plenty of great character interaction. Highly recommend it!

All Dressed Up in Love by Ruth Logan Herne ~ Review

All Dressed Up in Love: A March Wedding Story (A Year of Weddings Novella 2, #4)
Lucie's Review:

Tara Simonetti is full of enthusiasm. Even though she is currently studying law, she loves weddings, and working at the bridal shop is her dream come true. She even offers to work for free, just to prove that she can do it!

Greg has inherited his mother's bridal shop, the one that she poured years of love and hard work into to put him through school. But he doesn't know the first thing about running a bridal shop, and Tara might just be the answer to his prayers--in more ways than one.

I liked the way that Tara was able too sum up the difficulties that Elena's Bridal faced, and how she helped to turn it around, with the help of the wonderful ladies of Elena's Bridal.

I didn't warm to Greg immediately, he was so busy working that he didn't spend much time with his mother, but he learns from his mistakes and reorders his priorities.

Overall, this was a fantastic read, full of great characters, interaction, and plenty of of good old fashioned wedding drama! Definitely recommend!

Lucie's Review:

I loved the format of having three books in one, so that I didn't have to wait to read the next book, I could just keep reading--which was great because I didn't want to stop! But then when I was finished I wanted the next three!

I loved the common threads in each of the stories, and how they showed up in each other's stories. Each of the dogs is unique, and of a different breed, with a different specialty that help their human friends solve the mystery.

I liked how each of the stories was connected, yet complete all on its own, there is an over arching mystery to solve on what is behind the sudden rise in crime, yet each mystery finds he answer to their specific problem.

Each of the heroes are men of integrity and faith, who are dedicated to protecting others.

Capitol K-9 Unit: These lawmen solve the toughest cases with the help of their brave canine partners.

Lucie's Review:

A wonderful mix of action, adventure, interaction and suspense.

Gavin McCord is an officer in the K-9 Unit with his trusty dog, Glory at his side, he is determined to find the killer.
Cassie Danver's runs a nearby home for foster kids, "All Our Kids" and one of her young charges may have witnessed the crime. But Cassie is hesitant to let Gavin question the children. But when she suddenly becomes the killer's new target, trusting Gavin may be her best option.

Suspense isn't usually my favorite genre, but this book was amazing, from the excellent character development to the action packed scenes, and the many adorable children of "All Our Children."
I loved how the focus is one keeping the kids safe, and how so many of them become so dear to Gavin.

Gavin and Cassie are both strong, compassionate people of faith, who are dedicated to their work and surprised to find that someone they thought they knew is really so much more.

Overall, this was an excellent book with a fast hook, easy to read style, and a brisk pace. Sure to be a book that you won't want to put down, with heroes that you feel great about cheering for!

Anna's Crossing by Suzanne Woods Fisher ~ Review

Anna's Crossing (An Amish Beginnings #1)Lucie's Review:

Anna Konig and her family are headed to the New World aboard the Charming Nancy.
Bairn is the ship's Scottish carpenter, who despite their rough meeting, befriends Anna and her brother Felix. Bairn quickly bonds with Anna's eight year old brother, teaching him to speak English in preparation for the New World.
But on the long journey their friendship will be tested, and they will both be changed.

I liked how this was a different kind of Amish book and focused on a very interesting time in their history, as many left their homes across the waters to build a new life in America.

I thought it was kinda funny how when Bairn taught Felix English, he started speaking it with a Scottish accent!

Anna was wary of Bairn at first but comes to depend on him, as their friendship grows. I really liked that way that she was open about her faith, yet didn't feel the need to preach at him.

There are funny moments, in this book too, as well as history and romance.

Overall, an Amish tale from a different view, and place in time. Well written, with likable characters, and a great plot. Great for fans of Amish fiction who also love a good historical fiction.

This Quiet Sky
My Review:

Sarah Miller isn't looking forward to sitting next to Tucker O'Shay at school. She's heard the stories, that he isn't quite right, he's sick, yet no one will tell her what ails him.
The first day of school she meets Tucker, and it changes her life, he shows her a world where dreams are treasured and life is best lived in the moment.

This is a beautiful tale from beginning to end, and even though it is a novella in length, don't let that fool you, this one really packs a punch, and won't leave you untouched.

The whole time I was reading this, I kept thinking that I should know who Sarah was, but it wasn't until near the end that it all came together.

I loved the tender friendship between Tucker and Sarah, they were both what the other needed, and had so much to give.

Overall, this is a beautiful read, with characters that I won't soon forget, I loved Sarah and I'm definitely hoping that there will be more about her in future books! Highly recommend this unforgettable read!

An Amish Cradle by Beth Wiseman, Amy Clipson, Kathleen Fuller and Vannetta Chapman ~ Review

An Amish Cradle
Lucie's Review:

Each story shows a glimpse into how the lives of a couple changes after the addition of a child.

In His Father's Arms, Ruth Anne is a young wife, who doesn't know a lot about her son's condition. But makes an effort to learn more, in order to give her son the best life that she can. Meanwhile, her husband reacts differently by withdrawing. Will her husband ever accept their son?

I really liked Joshua in A Son for Always. When he married Carolyn, he adopted her son, Benjamin. He only wants the best for his family and does his best to give them what they need.

In A Heart Full of Love Ellie has reclaimed her independence after losing her sight, but when she and Christopher discover that they are expecting twins, it only increases her mother's worries.

I really loved the way that Etta and Mose's children welcome their new sibling who is something of An Unexpected Blessing even though they themselves are mostly grown.

Overall, a lovely collection of stories that are easy to read, and celebrate faith and family, while exploring that way that families change and grow with each new member.
