Surviving the Wilderness by Maggie K. Black // Review

Lucie's Review:

When his young daughter is taken, Jeff Connor must join forces with wilderness guide Quinn Duke as they race to bring his little girl back safe.

A fast paced, high stakes adventure that finds Quinn and Jeff battling not only the elements but those who are threatening Addison. Engaging and easy to follow, this was a suspenseful adventure I didn't want to put down! There was a lot going, I liked how Quinn and Jeff got to know and respect each other through this adventure.

Overall, this was an exciting read with great characters, strong faith and high stakes. Quickly drew me in and kept me guessing. Definitely one I'd recommend!

The Story of Love by Beth Wiseman // Review

My Review:

Yvonne Wilson moves to Montgomery to help out Jake and Eva with their bookstore while Eva is on bedrest and Jakes juggles the store with farming. Yvonne is excited for a new start, working alongside her new friends. Abraham can't deny the spark between himself and Yvonne, but he is already in a relationship.

An engaging read, I loved getting to know Yvonne and Abraham more as well as seeing familiar faces from previous books. I admired Abraham for staying true to his faith, and his morals. Yvonne is a kind woman adjusting to her new life in Montgomery, it was fun seeing Yvonne come to appreciate the true meaning of Christmas among her new friends.

An engaging sweet romance, though if it were a movie it might border on PG-13 for some suggestive scenes though framed in a negative light. A quick entertaining read, I look forward to seeing what is next for the families of Montgomery, Indiana!

Review:

A beautiful story of faith, family and the power of prayer.

Young Anne gives each of her three brothers a treasured 2 cent piece before they go to fight in the Civil War, hoping that the words minted on the coins will be a reminder and encouragement while they are away.

A wonderful story that brings out the author's love of coins and their history, as well as a strong message of faith. A great story to share with the young ones in your life, accompanied by lovely illustrations. I was intrigued by the 2 cent pieces from the story and it inspired me to do some research of my own. Such a wonderful book, great for age 5-8 especially.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

HOMESCHOOLERS, TEACHERS, AND FAMILY MEMBERS –

Coin collecting brings together history, art, and the thrill of discovery.

Children who collect coins will LOOK at coins differently. They can…

Look for people. For example, who is on the nickel? (Hint: Thomas Jefferson)

The new quarters featuring women include coins with Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American movie star; Nina Otero-Warren, who advocated for women’s suffrage and was a government official in New Mexico; and Wilma Mankiller, the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.

Look for places. The state quarter series includes all of the states like California with Yosemite Valley.

Look for dates. Connect coins to historical events. For example, coins minted in 2001 were minted the same year as the World Trade Center was attacked on September 11, 2001.

Look at coins as art. The people who design coins are artists.

Look for and find coins in change. Let the great adventure begin.

Look and learn why some coins are more valuable than other coins. There is a difference between the face value of a coin (a dime is worth ten cents), and its value to collectors.

Are you a homeschooler, a teacher, or a family member who wants to help children start their first coin collection?

The Rose and the Thistle by Laura Frantz // Review

My Review:

A captivating romance set against the backdrop of the Jacobite rebellion and King George I's ascent to the throne of England.

A staunch Jacobite and staunch Catholic, Lady Blythe Hedley must seek refuge from a family friend in Scotland when her father is declared a traitor to the crown.

A beautifully written book, obviously well researched, that breathes life into the pages of history, bringing the time and conflicts to life realistically as the story unfolds. The characters are well developed, and drew me into the story. I admired Blythe and Everard for their faith, as well as their devotion to their family and beliefs. Plus, their chemistry is off the charts!

A slow burn romance that is not to be dismissed, it pulled me into their world in the most enchanting way, while bringing to life the turbulence of the times. Perfect for fans of lush historical reads, a riveting escape from beginning to end. Highly recommend.

Hearts of Steel by Elizabeth Camden // Review

My Review:

A riveting novel set at the turn of the 20th century, as Liam Blackstone seeks to uncover the corruption at the elite levels, he risks his health and his heart.

Liam Blackstone sets his sights at the top as he fights for fair treatment of blue-collar workers, using his new position and family name to aid in his war. I loved Maggie from the very beginning with her hardworking, penny-pinching ways, passion for her business and family. It was also wonderful to see Patrick at Liam's side through it all.

Engaging, with a plot all the more gripping for its ties to real events. I loved how this book brought to life the struggles of hardworking small business owners in the face of big business threatening to strong arm the competition into doing their will. Based on true events, this gripping novel had me cheering for Maggie and Liam all the way through, I loved how history came to life through the everyday people and their courage!

Dark of Night by Colleen Coble // Review

My Review:

Picking up right after the events of the previous book, Annie finds herself tested by the revelations of Sarah's identity, and challenged by her daughter Kylie's Celiac's disease, while maneuvering the rekindling of her romance with Jon. Meanwhile a photographer with a troubled past goes missing, with foul pay suspected.

A thrilling, fast paced read, that brings readers back into the thick of it with Jon, Annie, and Kylie. I liked how this book built on the foundation of the previous book, exploring and growing relationships, in this high stakes adventure. I liked seeing Jon and Annie grow in their trust for one another, and how they try to be fair to Taylor despite the unknown. I admired Job's patience with Kylie as he get's to know her.

Overall, a riveting read that was hard to put down. A terrific addition to this amazing series. I'm excited to see how it will end in the final installment!

The Valet's Secret by Josi S. Kilpack // Review

Review:

A chance encounter and a kiss in the woods bring two lonely hearts together, but will a difference in class and situation keep them apart?

Kenneth is heir to an earldom, once a soldier he never expected to find himself a titled landowner. A chance encounter with a beautiful widow leaves him unwilling to settle for less than  love match as the pressure mounts for him to choose a wife.

A sweet clean Regency romance, with a love at first sight beginning. I liked that the story featured more mature characters with grown children from their previous marriages. It was a quick read, enjoyable, but hard for me to get into as I'm not a big fan of love at first sight. Rebecca is a hardworking woman, who is ready to branch out on her own now that her daughter is settled. While Kenneth is adjusting to her change in circumstance. A sweet read with a happily ever after.

The Finder of Forgotten Things by Sarah Loudin Thomas // Review

Review:

Sulley Harris survives by going town to town, pressing his luck, dowsing for water and raising false hopes. Until mysteriously his promises are delivered upon, and he begins uncovering secrets and finding things thought lost.

Set during the Depression, in Appalachia, the author brings a whimsy and folksy style of storytelling to the true life events of the Hawk's Nest Tunnel tragedy. The story brings together a cast of unlikely characters, who are each more than first meets the eye, as the story unfolds in surprising directions.

Gainey and Jeremiah were easy to like from the start, was they each have strong moral compasses and big hearts for others. Sulley is a walking contradiction in many ways, his actions and behavior baffling to those around him. I liked how the events challenged him to look at things differently.

Overall, this was an entertaining read, filled with heart, humor, loss, and new beginnings. It does a great job of dealing with difficult topics, focusing on the characters and their arcs, realistically bringing to life the setting and time period. A wholly enjoyable read.

Beauty From Ashes by Pamela Hart

Beauty From Ashes JustRead Blog Tour Welcome to the Blog Tour for Beauty from Ashes by Pamela Hart, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Beauty From Ashes Title: Beauty from Ashes
Series: Beauty from Ashes Trilogy #1
Author: Pamela Hart
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing
Release Date: July 25, 2022
Genre: Young Adult Clean Fantasy Romance (Allegorical)

How far are you willing to go for love?

When Prince Arnion volunteers to infiltrate the prison colony of Gehenna, romance is the last thing on his mind. Rescuing its inhabitants is his only priority. But the corruption in Gehenna runs deep, fueled by the obsessions of its fanatical leader—a king rumored to devour human hearts.

To succeed, Arnion must conceal his identity from the people he’s been sent to save, including a young woman he’s inexplicably drawn to. And when her life is threatened by two merciless guards, the prince risks everything to save her.

Afterward, she wants nothing to do with him or his promises of rescue. But she soon realizes there’s more to Arnion than meets the eye, and what he’s about to unleash on Gehenna will change everything.

My Review:

An allegory of Christ's love told in a Sci-Fi setting.

An intriguing allegory, set in sci-fi dystopian world. Prince Arnion comes to the prison colony of Gehenna, with a tender heart for those hurting there.

Well written, I caught on quickly to what was going on and where it would eventually end. I liked the setting and in some ways thought that it also drew parallels to the parable of the landowner's son. Over the course of the story there were things that could feel very odd if taking this book as a direct allegory, though I think that the correlations were not meant to be exact.

Overall, an engaging read, that does a great of telling the story in a futuristic space setting. A moving story, great for fans of speculative fiction!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Robin's Reward Title: Robin's Reward
Series: Bonita Creek #1
Author: June McCrary Jacobs
Publisher: Independently Published
Release Date: May, 2021 (re-release)
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Is a relationship which began with both parties harboring secrets destined to survive?

Welcome to friendly Bonita Creek, a small town in the Coastal Mountains of the Mendocino Coast of California . . .

Bonita Creek’s librarian, Robin Bennett, is heartbroken after being abandoned by her husband, Thomas. Mysterious Jeff Clarke arrives in town unexpectedly and touches Robin’s life with his wit and warmth. Without warning, Jeff’s harsh words and abrasive actions scare her off, and Robin’s hope of finding true, long-lasting love withers again.

Can the couple move past their troubles and the obstacles in their path to find love and happiness together? Jeff and Robin must use their faith and their newly-forged bond with each other to remain strong and true. Will it be enough for them to embrace a life of love, trials, and blessings . . . together?

'Robin's Reward,' Book One in the Bonita Creek Series, is a contemporary Christian romance story which is completely clean in language and content.

Excerpt:

Robin put on her sunglasses as they headed toward the park across the street. "Ready for the
official tour now?" she asked.
"Whenever you're ready."
"This is Veterans Memorial Park. My Grandpa John Chaplin's name is on the World War II
memorial wall here. He was in the Army and was wounded in Europe. I think it was in France. After he recuperated, he worked in intelligence at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. until the war ended. He worked on codes and communications."
"Sounds like a smart man."
"He was. He was intelligent, clever, compassionate, and kind. I was blessed to have him as
my grandfather. His name is also shown on the Korean War memorial wall over here."
They walked further into the park to see the Korean War wall.
"He served in both wars?" Jeff asked.
"Yes. In the Korean War he was stationed in South Korea and saw some combat. Fortunately, he wasn't wounded in that conflict," Robin said with a slight smile.
"I'm in awe of anyone who saw combat in not only one, but two wars!" Jeff replied.
"It's pretty amazing, isn't it?" she asked.
"Definitely amazing. Maybe more like astonishing since I don't come from a military family. Is this all right?" Jeff gestured to a bench engulfed with shade.
"Yes, it's nice and cool here."
They both sat down and then Jeff handed Robin her ice-cold smoothie. She slid the straw
through the lid and took her first sip.
"Delicious. Thanks."
"You're welcome. Tell me more about your family." Jeff sat back with his legs stretched in front of him and began sipping his smoothie through his straw.
"My grandparents raised me from the time I was fourteen. My mother died of colon cancer
after a lengthy battle. My dad was an emotional wreck after she died. We appeared on his
parents' doorstep in Bonita Creek one July afternoon about three months after Mom's death. He asked his parents to look after me while he tried to 'find himself.'"

Genre: Christian Western Contemporary Romance

After an idyllic life scarred by a traumatic event, is Jorie Woodstone ready to move forward to share her life's journey with a man who loves her unconditionally?

Jorie Woodstone is the owner and operator of the wildly successful Cowgirl Bakery in Old Town Bonita Creek. She appears to have it all. She is musically gifted and belongs to a warm, loving, supportive family; but she's built a brick fortress around her heart after being traumatized by an acquaintance in an unforgettable event three years earlier.

Join this talented, spirited cowgirl as she journeys on through life's joys and sorrows with faith, strength, courage, and love on the road to true happiness.

'Jorie's Journey,' Book Two in the Bonita Creek Series, is a contemporary Christian Western romance story which is completely clean in language and content.

Excerpt:

As she approached the front counter in her Cowgirl Bakery shop located on Main Street
in old town Bonita Creek, California, Jorie Woodstone wiped her wet hands on the fluffy towel buttoned to her crisp white apron. Her long, thick hair was pulled into a ponytail peeking out from beneath her red gingham scarf. An urge to make a detour to check her reflection in the nearby mirror kicked in when the man standing at the counter turned to face her. His emerald green eyes were set off by a head of thick, wavy dark brown hair.
Jorie recited her usual greeting, "Hi, may I help you?" in a slightly more-friendly-than-
usual tone. To her surprise, the newcomer was so busy checking her out that he hesitated for
nearly thirty seconds before responding. When he spoke, his rich southern baritone vibrated
through her ears.
"Hello, miss. I need to pick up a couple of pies to take over to my friend's house for
Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. The Cowgirl Bakery was highly recommended to me by my
hostess at the bed and breakfast inn where I'm staying. Please don't let me down by telling me it's too late to order pies for the occasion." His mouth settled into a sweet pout.
"What flavors did you have in mind?" Jorie tried to sound thrilled to have his business at
this late hour. In truth, she was exhausted from the multitude of Thanksgiving orders for pies and other baked goods she'd received from her ultra-supportive hometown. She dreamed of going home early tonight to soak her exhausted body in a luxurious bubble bath and watch a couple of episodes of her favorite Masterpiece Mystery series.
"What do you recommend? I mean, you're the one who works in a bakery and all."
"I think it's always nice to offer an assortment of pies. How about one organic apple cinnamon and one organic pumpkin nutmeg? Most people seem to like one or both of those flavors."
"I'm from New Orleans, so I was dreaming of a pecan pie . . ."
"No can do," Jorie clipped off. "We don't usually do pecan pie here in California. Well, I mean we don't do pecan pie without some advance notice. It's too late to order organic pecans for tomorrow."
"What a shame," the customer shook his head sadly. "Well, I guess I'll just have to accept
the fact tomorrow will be my first Thanksgiving feast ever without a slice or two or three of
pecan pie."
He looked as if he were already grieving the loss of pecan pie on his Thanksgiving menu.
Jorie felt a twinge of regret for his loss, but the line of customers behind him was stacking up and she was short-handed today. Her most-experienced employee, Connie, had requested the day off so that she and her husband could travel to spend the holiday with their family in Idaho. Her other experienced employee, James, was home nursing a bad case of strep throat and was unable to serve the public.
She wanted nothing more than to hurry this man along. However, she accepted long ago the reality that a large part of being a successful small business owner was to project the image.
that said owner actually enjoyed working with the public. She always attempted to give the
illusion of being the queen of customer service in Bonita Creek.

It's late summer, 1952, in friendly Bonita Creek, a small town in the Coastal Mountains of the Mendocino Coast of California . . .

She learns to be flexible and understanding as she looks outside of her own life and examines the impact of unforeseen events on those closest to her heart.

'Christmas in Bonita Creek,' Book Three in the Bonita Creek Series, is a historical Christian holiday romance story which is completely clean in language and content.

Excerpt:

Estelle sat quietly for a few moments before she smiled. She had been in love with John since she was barely seventeen, much too young to marry according to her mother. At that time,
Sam and John were serving in Europe in World War II. Since John had been her brother's best friend since childhood, Estelle felt like she knew him well even though he was five and a half years older than she. Now at the ripe old age of twenty-four, Estelle knew her mother had been right all along.
By the time both men returned from Europe in mid-1945, Estelle had blossomed from a
lanky teen into a pretty young woman. When she turned eighteen, John asked Mr. Vincent's
permission to date his only daughter. The Vincents trusted John completely, so he and Estelle began dating.
It didn't take either of them long to discover that they were meant for each other. Estelle's
spirited, independent, outgoing personality perfectly complemented John's serious, intelligent, reserved nature. They enjoyed going on long walks, fishing, swimming, going to the theater to see movies and plays, and attending church services and events together.
When Estelle turned twenty-one in 1949, John proposed to her at Evergreen Pond where they liked to go to picnic and fish. She was taken completely by surprise when he proposed.
Without hesitation, she accepted; and John gave her a modest diamond ring set in gold. They agreed to wait until the autumn of 1950 to marry.
Unfortunately, like many young couples across the nation, fate had other plans for the
pair. In late June of 1950, President Truman entered the United States into the Korean War after North Korea invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950. Sam and John were reactivated into the US Army and were swiftly sent to Korea to join the military ranks fighting against the threat of Communism.

On My Honor by Patty Smith Hall // Celebrate Lit

About the Book

Book: On My Honor

Author: Patty Smith Hall

Genre: Christian / Historical Fiction / Romance / Intrigue

Release date: January, 2023

Ginny Mathis was finished with nursing school and had no intention of staying rooted in the Outer Banks—then war broke out. With her father away, she feels duty-bound to stay and help her mother and younger sister. While working as a clerk for the Oregon Inlet ferry, naval officers ask Ginny and others to be watchful for German U-boats reportedly spotted in the area. So to help occupy her teenage sister, Ginny enlists the Girl Scout troop she leads to help watch for suspicious activity along the coast.

Timothy Elliott is no stranger to death. As a British reporter working with the M-6, he’s numb to the losses of war after two years of fighting the Germans. Maybe that’s why he volunteered for this mission—to connect with an ex-German naval officer who stole the Furor’s battle plan for the Atlantic war. When the boat giving him passage to New York is bombed near the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Tim is thrown from the boat and wakes up in the care of a group of young girls.

Ginny follows her sneaky sister on a clandestine mission and discovers the shipwreck victim. Ginny knows she must take charge, but is this man the enemy, or does he hold secrets that could turn the tide of the Battle of the Atlantic in the allies’ favor?

My Review:

A group of Girl Scouts find themselves embroiled in espionage when 2 strangers wash up on the Outer Banks of Oregon.

Ginny Mathis comes home one semester shy of her nursing degree at her father's urging to come and help take care of her mother and younger sister, she trains the troop to watch for German U-Boats and report suspicious activity. They are tested when the battle comes to the home front with the arrival of 2 strangers.

An engaging read, I liked the comradery between the girls as they work together, as well as how the sisters become closer through their experiences. I thought it was cool how the Girl Scouts contributed to the war efforts, and all of the useful skills that Ginny had taught them.

Overall, a well written story full of adventure, faith, family, and romance. I loved how it showed everyday people working together to protect their country!

More from Patty

Did you know that the Girl Scouts (or Girl Guides) serviced as spies on HIs Majesty’s Secret Service during World War One? I didn’t either until I picked up a book on female spies at my local Barnes and Noble. There were only two paragraphs about how the girls worked with the MI5 for the duration of the war. It was enough to get my heart pumping!

Being a former Girl Scout myself, I was amazed at what these young girls did to help our country during the war. What activities did the Girl Scouts/Girl Guides do in World War II? Anything asked of them. They organized drives for anything from fat (to make bullets) to paper, stepped into positions left vacant by men serving on the front and worked Victory gardens to provide food for their community. They did so many things, I can’t begin to name them all here. By March 1944, the Girl Scouts had provided over 15 million volunteer hours toward the war effort.

Isn’t that amazing? No wonder I had to write a book about them!

To Protect His Children by Linda Goodnight // Review

Lucie's Review:

A heartwarming romance of family and finding second chances.

Kyra answers an add for a housekeeper, and is surprised to find one important detail missing...she is also expected to care for toddler triplets! Can Wade give love a second chance?

A charming read, with adorable children in this sweet small town romance. I liked how Kyra and Wade got to know each other through the everyday ordinary, and their shared faith. I also liked that Wade had a strong relationship with his brother, and that he does the best that he can for his kids.

Overall, a sweet, heartwarming read with great interaction and good relationship building, along characters that I could root for all the way through!

Authentically Izzy by Pepper Basham // Review

My Review:

A delightful epistolary romantic comedy, perfect for the booklover's heart!

Izzy Edgewoods's  well-meaning, interfering cousin Josie signs her up for an online dating site. The story follows Izzy and her cousin's email chains, chronicling their adventures and their hilarious mishaps.

A completely charming read that brought a smile to my face, I loved the nerdy literary references as well as the humorous style in while the story was told. Izzy is a likeable heroine, who doesn't want to be a burden and has a passion for books. I loved her dialogue, and her close relationship with her cousins.

Brodie is a wonderful man, bookish, kind, and I loved how he wanted to share his world with her.

You will not want to miss this fantastic heartwarming and delightfully satisfying romantic comedy, I loved Izzy's family and how they supported her throughout, especially Luke, who I am hoping get's his own book soon! Highly recommend!

Texas Buried Secrets by Virginia Vaughan // Review

Lucie's Review:

Deputy Cecile Richardson vows to brings a serial killer to justice, making her the killer's next target.

Cecile enters a deadly game with a killer, she relies on Sheriff Josh Avery to help her bring him to justice in this fast paced adventure. A page turning read, that kept me on my toes.

An entertaining and easy to get into read, plenty of suspense. A little more intense than normal, and a heavier on the suspense side.

Overall, a clean and suspenseful read, with a will they or won't they romance, as they pursue a serial killer.

Evidence of Innocence by Shirlee McCoy // Review

Lucie's Review:

Finally released from prison after serving 15 years for a crime she did not commit, she is determined to reveal the truth.

An engaging read, suspenseful with plenty of twists along the way. Marcus is a great guy, who is there to offer a helping hand, even when Kinsley doesn't agree. This was a fast paced read, entertaining and enjoyable, the romantic relationship was kinda rushed in my opinion.

I liked how Marcus was supportive of Kinsley, and I admired her determination. This was a quick read, with a lot going on, and plenty to recommend it.
