Almost Like Being in Love by Beth K. Vogt ~ Review

Almost Like Being in Love (Destination Wedding #2)
Lucie's Review:

After quitting her job at Hollister Reality, Caron Hollister agrees to go wo a wedding expo with her friend Margo, who is engaged to be married. At the expo, Caron wins an all expense paid destination wedding. The only problem is that Caron and her boyfriend, Alex, aren't even engaged!

Alex Madison has spent much of his life caring for his mother, and working as an air conditioner repairman. Alex is a kind man with a complex history, he and Caron are close, and know each other's fears and dreams. He understands much of Caron's childhood, as she has spent most of her life trying to please her father.

Kade Webster is an old acquaintance, a realtor in Colorado who used to work with Caron at Hollister, and he asks her to help him stage a house after his stager runs into a family emergency. Kade enjoys his job, and I liked his friendship with his Army Ranger friend, Mitch, and how he works to help Mitch and his fiancé, Lacey find a home so they can start their life together.

I loved revisiting Vanessa and Logan, the couple from the last book, and the good advice they gave Caron as she questioned her life and relationships.

Overall, this was a great read with a wonderful cast of characters, and amazing dialogue. I loved the natural and realistic humorous touches. A great plot, and great interaction and relationships between the various characters. Will Caron turn to God in the midst of life's storms?

Punderdome Game by Jo and Fred Firestone ~ Game Review

Punderdome: A Card Game for Pun LoversMy Review:

A game fashioned after the classic game show of the same name--which to be honest I had never heard of before this card game.

Two different colored cards are drawn, one is a action, and the other is more of a noun. And these two prompts must be used to construct the pun, and the person or team who is the first to have 10 pun matches wins.

As a pun lover myself I found myself challenged by the game, and I appreciated the fun scenarios that were presented. It is a clean, but witty game, but beware, if your fellow players hate puns...you may make some enemies.

The biggest challenge for me was to find people who actually wanted to play this game with me. Because believe it or not there are people who absolutely hate puns, with a passion. So unless you want to make some friends into enemies try to stay clear of pun haters with this game.

It takes a while to get the swing of the game, and we changed some of the rules to make the prizes simpler. Honestly, it's the people who play the game with you that make the game, and if you are blessed with pun loving friends this is perfect. But if you are more like myself--not quite so blessed with pun loving friends, this game will likely not see the light of day again for some time.

Overall, I'd have to say that this is definitely more of a niche game, so if you are the targeted demographic then this is a dream come true. But if this isn't your thing, or it is your kind of thing but you don't have anyone else to play with this might fall a bit flat. Would make a great gift for the pun lover in your life.

Sea Rose Lane by Irene Hannon ~ Review

Sea Rose Lane (Hope Harbor #2)Lucie's Review:

Eric Nash comes home to Hope Harbor, after losing his job due to company downsizing, it's not what he planned but he;s looking forward to the peace and quiet. Eric returns to find that his father is having their home renovated and the architect is the lovely woman he recently ran into in town.

B.J. Stevens has lived in Hope Harbor for a year now, and she's loved getting involved in the small welcoming community. She also volunteers with Helping Hands, giving assistance to local residents who need a little extra help.

Will Eric find what he's looking for on Sea Rose Lane?

Eric reconnects with his hometown, rediscovering the things that he left behind, and rekindling friendships. I liked how he sees his hometown in a new light, and reconnects with his old friend Charley, the fish taco vendor and artist.

B.J. doesn't trust Eric, with his big city smooth talking, he offers to help her build the set for an upcoming Helping Hands production, and while they are working together she starts to see the real side of him. She sees that he is looking for something, and she encourages him to seek God.

I really enjoyed returning to Hope Harbor, and all the lovely characters like, Tracy, Michael, and Charley. I loved the setting in this book along with the wonderful characters, fantastic dialog, and evocative atmosphere. A delightful read, fill with humor, and a great ending!

Trusting the Cowboy by Carolyne Aarsen ~ Review

Trusting the Cowboy (Big Sky Cowboys #2)
Lucie's Review:

In order to inherit her father's ranch Lauren McCauley must stay at her father's ranch for 2 months, like her sister before her.

Vic Moore has been leasing the McCauley Ranch for the last three years, his family owns the neighboring ranch. Vic and Keith McCauley had a handshake deal that Vic was leasing to own the ranch, but now that Keith is gone, Vic has nothing in writing and Lauren has a buyer all lined up to snap the place up at a price that Vic could never match.

Will Vic help Lauren fall in love with the ranch again?

I like how Vic handles the difficult situation he's in, he helps Lauren around the ranch and does his best not to make it personal. He is a strong man of faith, and a true blue cowboy hero, he respects Lauren and her wishes, listening to what she says and offering friendship.

Lauren comes to Montana with a plan but the more she sees of her father's ranch, the more options she realizes that she has. Lauren was betrayed by her former fiance, but Vic soon proves that he is made of different stuff.

Overall, a wonderful story, engaging, with great interaction between the characters. I loved revisiting Saddlebank, Montana, and all the familiar faces.

A Beau for Katie by Emma Miller ~ Review

A Beau for Katie

Lucie's Review:

Katie Byler is visiting Seven Poplars and staying with Sara Yoder, the local matchmaker. But Katie isn't looking to meet her match just yet, so she takes a temporary job helping out a man with a broken leg.

Freeman Kemp lives with his Uncle Jehu, who happens to be blind, after breaking his leg in an accident his Uncle asks the community matchmaker to find them someone to help around the house, and finds Katie. Freeman doesn't want Katie's help, he has a particular way that he does everything and he doesn't want her help.

But Katie and Freeman decide to put aside their differences, when they agree to join forces and find a wife for Uncle Jehu.

I liked that Katie was not intimidated by Freeman, and his somewhat terse and opinionated behavior. She has her own ideas and isn't afraid to share them. Katie is friendly and outgoing, as well as organized and hardworking, she wins over everyone with whom she comes into contact. I liked how she formed a friendship with Ellie, and Ellie helps Katie make decisions and encourages her to stand on her convictions.

Freeman is stubborn, but it doesn't take him long to admit that having Katie around is actually a good thing, even though they butt heads. He doesn't like being cooped up and unable to help his uncle out. He's used to being in charge, but he makes an effort to work with Katie and tries to be less surly.

Overall, a lovely read, I loved revisiting Seven Poplars and the returning characters like Ellie and Sara. An enjoyably sweet read, about opposites who find they are not so different after all.

The Berenstain Bears: School Time Blessings by Mike Berenstain ~ Review

My Review:

As a child I learned to read with the Berenstain Bears, so they will always a have a special place in my heart. I'm delighted that Mr. Mike Berenstain is continuing to bring the heartwarming adventures to the next generation.

In this book Brother and Sister are returning to school after Summer, and their sister Honey is beginning Pre-school. Though they are excited to learn and see their friends again, there are subjects that don't come easily that cause Brother and Sister to worry about the coming year...

A delightful read about going back to school and the haunting worries that come with change. Mama and Papa bear teach Brother and Sister that there is nothing to worry about, and that no matter what that they can always talk to God and ask for strength and guidance.

Overall, what a wonderful book, I liked the theme of not worrying and how scripture was incorporated into the story. A delightfully wholesome read, that is timeless as the stories were when I was growing up. A great story about trusting God with our worries, perfect for sharing.

Pony Express Hero by Rhonda Gibson ~ Review

Pony Express Hero (Saddles and Spurs #2)Lucie's Review:

Jacob Young is at the right place at the right time, and saves a little girl named Daisy from an oncoming stampede. Daisy just so happens to be the little sister of Jacob's new boss, Lilly Johnson.

Lilly has her hands full running a ranch and raising her younger sister, Daisy. She knows that Daisy couldn't have gotten to that canyon on her own, so she resolves not to let her sister out of her sight, but that means she has to take her everywhere with her.

Will and Lilly and Jacob be able to keep Daisy safe?

Lilly is a strong capable woman who loves her sister, she hasn't had many friends in her life, but she befriends Willow, the woman she hires to watch Daisy, and finds a loyal friend in Jacob. Jacob is more than happy to help Lilly, even though he doesn't technically work for her, which drives the foreman, Sam, crazy.

I liked how Jacob shared his faith with Lilly, reading his Bible to her and Daisy at night. Jacob hasn't had an easy life, but he has made the best of his life, and he is the oldest of the Young Clan, he has to overcome his insecurities to help Lilly solve the mystery and keep Daisy safe.

Overall, a book that starts with a bang, with great characters that you can cheer for, with good dialog. I fell in love with the delightful Daisy, who is very talkative and active, and wants to have things her way. I love how Jacob bonded with her, and became her friend. A lovely read.

Mystery Child by Shirley McCoy ~ Review

Mystery Child (Mission: Rescue #5)Lucie's Review:

Quinn Robertson calls her ex-marine brother, August, with the surprise that their sister, Tabitha dropped off.
Malone Henderson is there to help when Quinn get's run off the road on the way to her brother's house. Malone is a member of HEART, a private security team that specializes in extracting people from difficult situations. He helps Quinn get Jubilee into protective custody, but he can't shake the feeling that their troubles aren't over yet...

I liked Quinn, she's been through a lot in the few years, with the loss of her husband and dealing with the medical bills. She has a heart for children and agrees to take Jubilee even though she hasn't seen her sister in years.

Malone is great at his job and serious about helping people. He's determined to protect Quinn, even though he's technically on vacation!

A fast paced, action filled story. I loved how Quinn and Malone encouraged each other throughout, and worked together to solve the mystery and protect Jubilee. I loved seeing some characters from past books when the rest of HEART showed up to help. A wonderfully engaging read with a fire cracker ending.

Courageous Brides Romance Collection by Johnnie Alexander, Michelle Griep, Eileen Key, Debby Lee, Rose Allen McCauley, Jennifer Uhlarik, Jenness Walker, Renee Yancy, and Donita K. Paul ~ Review

The Courageous Brides Collection: Compassionate Heroism Attracts Male Suitors to Nine Spirited WomenLucie's Review:

Nine women step out in faith and courage despite their circumstances.

Marcy Whitt in The Healing Promise cares about the native Indians, and is willing to help a sick girl in the doctor's absence.
Joel Ellison accompanies her and encourages her along the way, even though she is promised to another.

In The Doctor's Woman Emmy Nelson rushes to the fort to help the new doctor, but Dr. James Clark isn't planning on staying for long. Dr. Clark is only there for a short time before returning home to report his findings and a prestigious position at Harvard. Will Emmy change his mind?

In An Everlasting Promise, Veronica Fergus stows away on Seth McKenzie's cattle drive. Seth isn't happy when he discovers her, but Veronica quickly proves that she is worth her salt, and wins all the cowhands over with her good cooking. And she proves to be a good hand when they run into many adventures along the way.

Daisy Hollister in Love on the Run wants to ride for the Pony Exress, and make money to help her deceased friend's family. Not only that but also to get away from the man who killed her parents. So she convinces the stationmaster, Billy Cook to let her ride. But that's just the beginning...

In Hidden Courage,  Ellinor Peck discovers other young women who want to fight against slavery, and she bravely stands up for her convictions despite her family being slave holders. William Chandler admires her spirit. He is in town to take up an apprenticeship under her uncle, who is doctor. He refuses to make promises he can't keep, and I admired how he prays and waits.

The Encumbered Bride is a favorite of mine because of the humor.  Grant wakes up to giggles with no idea where he is, and he can't ask because he is too wounded to speak. He learns about the family by listening to them interact with each other, but he soon discovers that he never hears an adult. The eldest of the ten, Mae, is in charge and she's doing her best to keep everything running smoothly without letting others know that their parents are dead, so that they can all stay together.

In Mountain Echoes, Hannah Rose rises to the occasion and saves everyone on the stagecoach with her strength and tenacity, taking care of her young charge, and the injured stagecoach driver.

Letters From Lucy is like one of the dime novels that Lucy refers to derisively in the beginning of the story. Lucy writes imagined news stories to her friend Amelia in Boston.  Sam has a secret and doesn't know if he can trust her, miscommunication and conclusions are jumped to, in this adventure.

In Battlefield Bride, Katherine Wilkes begins helping at the makeshift church-turned-hospital, she manages to feed and clean the wounded before the doctor, Major James Logan, even know they are there. James goes from insisting she leave, to finding her services indispensable. James teaches her about Christ, and helps to understand His sacrifice.

A wonderful collection, with fantastic characters--I loved these stories about Courageous Brides, and how they stood up for their beliefs and rose to the occasion to help others.

Traces of Guilt by Dee Henderson ~ Review

Traces of Guilt (Evie Blackwell Cold Case #1)Astor's Review:

Evie Blackwell loves her job as an Illinois State Police Detective, and though she longs to settle down with a family, she doesn't see how that could work with her demanding career.

Sheriff Thane finds himself working with Evie, on the new special task force, directed at solving cold cases. But as one cold case connects to another, they are determined to find answers, and those closest to them may hold the key to unlocking the case...

Slow to start this isn't quite what I expected, as I am a avid fan of Ms. Henderson, and this book didn't start out with the same spark for me. The first in a series, this book did a great job of laying the foundation for future books, as the book progressed I found myself more drawn to the plot and the characters, it just took a lot of explaining and more chapters than I would have liked to get there--for me personally.

Evie is discerning, and sharp, she sees things that others don't, simply because she know how to look for triggers. She does her best to see the cold cases from every angle. And this is a great realistic book about what professionals do to solve the mystery, and close the case.

Overall, a great start to a new series, with perhaps a different approach than what I am used to though well researched and still a great read. I'm planning on reading the rest of the series for certain! I liked Sheriff Thane and his family, he is very passionate about his job, and does his best to help Evie find the answers she is looking for. Fantastic start to a new series.

Every Bride Has Her Day by Janice Thompson ~ Review

Every Bride Has Her Day (Brides with Style #3)Lucie's Review:

Katie is being pull every which way, by well wishers who all have ideas and want to contribute to her and Brady's wedding, which is making Brady think that they should elope in Hawaii.

Will Katie and Brady give in to the stress, or will they stand for what they want on their special day?

I loved revisiting characters from the previous books, including Aunt Alva who get's her own shot at love with Eduardo, who fits right in with the clan.

Crystal is also getting married, to Katie's brother, Jasper. She loves her hometown, but wants something different for her wedding.

I like Brady lot in this book, he stands by Katie and encourages her to make her own choices. He takes Katie's concerns seriously and wants what will make her happy. He even reaches out to his mother, and is happy to find that she wants to help.

I loved Katie's giving heart, and how she still listens to the concerns of others, like when Lori-Lou, her cousin, feels overwhelmed after the baby is born.

Overall, this is a wonderful book about celebrating the real reason behind a wedding, the love, the commitment, and the sharing with friends and family, as well as the memories made along the way. A wonderful addition to the series.

The Captain Takes a Wife by Doris Durbin ~ Review

The Captain Takes a Wife: The Captain Chronicles, 1875Lucie's Review:

Captain Harry Richardson is an honorable man of integrity who is committed to serving his Lord. He is about to board a train heading to the mountains of Northern Georgia to serve as a circuit preacher. Harry is surprised when Sarah steps off the carriage and into his arms. He recognizes her face from the revival meetings, but he was never able to speak to her as she'd always left early.

Sarah is school teacher who has thwarted her uncle's plan to marry her off to his business partner. She convinces Harry to marry her--for real--instead of merely pretending.

Will this marriage of convenience work out after all?

I liked Harry's three college friends join them on the train, Walt, Martin, and Max. They are all musicians and along with Harry on the fiddle they are able to make some good old fashioned music. Harry friends are also willing to step in and help him in any way that they can, in protecting Sarah from her uncle.

Ned served in the Confederate army with Harry, and he works with the Treasury Department, and he's pretty sure that the guys he is after are the same ones that are after Sarah.

The whole book takes place in seven very action packed days, dodging dangerous henchmen, plenty of humor, and faith.  There is a mysterious "Boss" who seem to be one step ahead of them, and Harry and Sarah don't know who they can trust anymore.

Overall, I loved the colorful cast of characters, and the many people who help them along the way. I liked the humorous moments, and the interaction and faith of Harry and Sarah. I couldn't put it down, it kept me reading and guessing throughout. There are plenty of surprises, and happy endings along the way. I enjoyed every moment of it!

The Heart Answers by Colleen Coble ~ Review

Lucie's Review:

Jessica Dubois's mother does what she has to to take care of her family after her husband is killed, marrying Samuel, her husband's brother. But Jessica doesn't agree with her mother's choices.

Ellen is a young widow with a three year old daughter, Franny. Ellen asks her husband's cousin, Clay Cole, to help her get a job at Fort Bridger--even if it's as a washer woman.

Clay Cole is a traveling preacher, he goes from fort to fort, ministering to the men. He is very judgmental of Jessica when he meets her, she is spoiled and frivolous, much like his mother.

Three very different people find their lives entwined in the wild beauty of the Wyoming wind.

I didn't think that would like Jessica when I first started to read this book, let alone that she would surprise me and be my favorite character, but she was. She grew so much, and matured over the course of the book. I loved her connection to Franny, and how she comes through for her in hard times. Jessica comes to see the truth about herself, and makes conscious decisions to change.

I liked the interaction between Clay and Jessica, he is immune to her flirtatious ways, and he challenges her to do things for other people, calling her "Red" because he knows she doesn't like it.

Overall, this is a wonderful book, with a full plot, and plenty of action, drama, poignant storyline. As well as some humorous moments as well. A wonderful setting with a full cast of characters, I loved how Franny brought out the best in Jessica. I loved book, and would recommend it highly to fans of western romance.

Dawn at Emberwilde by Sarah Ladd ~ Review

Dawn at Emberwilde (Treasures of Surrey, #2)Lucie's Review:

Isabel Creston is a teacher at the school where she spent most of her childhood, she has known little beyond her life at the school. So she is surprised when she get's a letter inviting her to come and live with the family that she never knew she had at Emberwilde Hall. She accepts the invitation on the condition that her younger sister, Lizzie, can accompany her.

But what secrets await Isabel and Lizzie at Emberwilde?

A historical novel, with a gothic twist, as dark secrets, and strange happenings in the forest make for an intriguing and fast paced read. Isabel and her sister are plunged into a world of secrets and intrigue, when invited to Emberwilde Hall, and they find that not everyone is who they seem...

This is a well crafted and quickly moving read, with taunt tension, and mystery that brings a sense of urgency and moves the plot well.

I liked Constance Ellison, Isabel's cousin who tries to befriend them immediately, and welcomed them with open arms.

Colin Galloway is the magistrate of Northrop, and a good friend of Mr. Ellison, and his is helping to investigate the strange and disturbing things discovered in the forest. He is a very helpful man, in the right place at the right time more often than not.

I really liked the relationship between Isabel and Lizzie and how they have a heart for others, volunteering their time at the foundling home.

Overall, a fantastic read, with a great pacing and sense of tension, and intrigue. This book has a gothic feel to it, and would be great for fans of Jane Eyre. Isabel is faced with a choice, as her aunt seems to be trying to throw her together with one man, yet there is another that Isabel cannot forget. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Highly recommend!

The Beautiful Pretender by Melanie Dickerson ~ Review

The Beautiful Pretender (Thornbeck #2)My Review:

Reinhart Margrave of Thornbeck must find a wife, but he doesn't want to just marry anyone. Reinhart wants to at least have an idea of the character of his future wife, so he arranges to host 12 women from the neighboring territories for two weeks, testing their character with the help of his friends Jorgen and Odette.

Avelina is the lady's maid of Lady Dorothea, but when Dorothea runs off with her lover, the Earl of Plimmwald forces her to take his daughter's place. Avelina must pass as aristocracy, yet not stand out enough as to be chosen, but despite her best attempts the Margrave as noticed her. But as an evil plot unfolds, will she be able to save Thornbeck before it's too late?

Avelina dreams of the freedom to marry for love, and with the dowry promised to her by the Earl of Plimmwald, if all goes smoothly, she might just get her wish. Avelina is kind and compassionate, she does her best to stay in the background and tries to draw the Margrave's eye to another young lady. I admired Avelina for her honesty and how she stayed true to who she was, even while pretending to be someone else.

Reinhart has seen many battles, as a knight he fought bravely, but in his own kingdom rumors run rampant, accusing him of murdering his own brother for Thornbeck. Reinhart is thoughtful, and a bit like a Mr. Darcy, because first impressions do not tell the full story of his character.  I liked his thoughtfulness, and that he did not want to plunge himself into a loveless marriage for advantage.

One of my favorite people was sweet Magdalen, a true friend to Avelina, foriving, giving, and kind, she brought light wherever she went.

Overall, this was a fantastic read, I loved the fairy tale connection to The Princess and the Pea, Ms. Dickerson truly has a gift and I was riveted to the book and didn't want to put it down throughout my busy week. This book stands well on its own, but if you have read the previous book you will be happy to see Odette and Jorgen back and playing a very important part in this book. Action-packed, with faith, drama, and romance, this is a fantastic read about the importance of noble character, and true friendship. Definitely recommend!

 (Thomas Nelson, May 2016)

What happens when a margrave realizes he's fallen in love with a servant?

The Margrave of Thornbeck has to find a bride, fast. He invites ten noble-born ladies from around the country to be his guests at Thornbeck Castle for two weeks, a time to test these ladies and reveal their true character.

Since the latter seems unlikely, she concentrates on not getting caught. No one must know she is merely a maidservant, sent by the Earl of Plimmwald to stand in for his daughter, Dorothea.

Despite Avelina's best attempts at diverting attention from herself, the margrave has taken notice. And try as she might, she can't deny her own growing feelings. Light of the Last by Chuck Black ~ Review

Light of the Last (Wars of the Realm, #3)
My Review:

The thrilling third book in the Wars of the Realm Series, finds Drew Carter given an ultimatum prison, or the CIA. Drew's special abilities and talents have caught the eyes of the government, and they want to use him as a weapon to carry out missions and gather information. Drew is still unsure of what he is seeing when he sees the "Invaders," he is still trying to reconnect with Ben, whom he hasn't seen since the separated for safety, and he still can't get Sydney Carlyle out of his head.

Meanwhile Validus and his comrades are preparing themselves for the battle of the ages, as they assemble to protect Drew from the evil that follows him.

But what is ahead, is bigger than either Validus or Drew could have ever imagined....

Heart pounding action packed sequences, this book has me glued to the page. Blending real life threats into the storyline, in some ways this book was startlingly realistic and plausible. The book alternates between Validus and Drew, as they work to stay one step ahead of the evil that seems to follow Drew wherever he goes.

Drew is forced to make many tough choices along the way, and during his time in the CIA he is plagued by questions, and wonders if what he is seeing of the spiritual realm is real.

Everytime I review these books I struggle to do them justice, without sounding somewhat crazy, to some extent you have to read these books to understand what I'm talking about. Mr. Black does a great job of blending the realm into everyday life, along with the front page headlines, I appreciated that he explained much of why he wrote the characters the way that he did, using scripture and truth. The book is well balanced, and I'm impressed by how well he handled so many of the topics that he presented.

Non-stop action throughout, in this page turning third installment in Mr. Black's latest series, that will send your heart pounding, in this fantastic adventure. I admired Drew's quick thinking, and sincerity, as he fights for answers and truth against the forces of both realms.

Absolutely explosive read! I cannot recommend this book more, the best of the series so far, I can't wait to read what is next! This is one of those books where if I tried to explain it to you I would just sound crazy, so I would just recommend reading the entire series. Highly recommend!!!

Anomaly by Krista McGee ~ Review

Anomaly (Anomaly #1)My Review:

Thalli has lived in Pod C among her peers her whole life. And though she tries to be like her friend Rhen, never questioning, and ever obedient, Thalli cannot live without questioning and feeling things. She finds that she can express herself through music, and when she reacts with emotion to a "primitive" piece of music, she finds herself taken away for annihilation.

But her childhood friend, Berk, now one of the privileged scientists, fights to have her saved for study of her brain. Berk wants to save her from the invasive experiments of Dr. Loudin, and as reality and virtual reality blend together, will Thalli ever find the truth?

Thalli is a strong heroine, different from her peers, she wonders why it is so easy for them to not question the powers that be, or the scientists, not wondering about the primitive world above them. But after being taken for annihilation and testing, she meets John, a strange man with memories of the primitive world, of things like love, marriage, and family. John speaks of feelings as if they are a natural part of life, and he also speaks of the Designer who made everything, his love for the world, and sacrifice of his son Jesus.

Yet there is also the world above, and the colony that is thriving without the controlled rule of the scientists. Asta and Stone, who live above, and make her wonder if there is more than their colony below the earth.

Berk is a true friend to Thalli, chosen to join the revered scientists, he is clever and is constantly working on a new innovation. As Dr. Louden's experiments get more and more invasive, Thalli has choices to make, will she fight for an unknown future?

I loved Thalli, she is a strong heroine, with a longing for something real, for something true. Ms. McGee did a great job of capturing her voice, with her joy and wonder, fear and desolation. The first of a trilogy, I was engaged beginning to end, intrigued by this strange new, and fearsome world below.

A fast-paced adventure for fans of dystopian fiction, this book stands out from the crowd with its search for clarity and truth. Highly recommend!

An Elegant Facade by Kristi Ann Hunter ~ Review

An Elegant Façade (Hawthorne House, #2)

Lucie's Review:

In the beginning the author warns that this is Georgina's story, so we do revisit some scenes from the previous book, A Noble Masquerade, but from Georgina's point of view.

Georgina Hawthorne is Miranda's younger sister, and she is finally ready for her debut season, which she has spent years preparing for with her close friend, and lady's maid Harriette.

Colin McCrae is close friends with Ryland, the Duke of Marshington, and is constantly being pulled into his schemes. Colin is a gentleman and a businessman, who tries to live out his Christian principles in all that he does. Colin finds himself at many of the parties because of how he does business with many of the aristocrats, like the Duke of Riverton, Georgina's brother, which means that he is present at Georgina's debut, and even dances with her.

Colin is frustrated to find himself drawn to a woman, so enmeshed in endearing herself to society, will they be willing to sacrifice what is dear to them to be together?

I liked the interaction between Colin and Georgina instantly. Colin knows that she is husband hunting, and that he far beneath her sights, but he can't help teasing her to see if he can crack her perfectly practiced poise. Yet as he get's to know her he is even more intrigued, yet unafraid to tell her the truth when no one else will.

I thought it was so funny when Georgina's conscience started to sound like Colin, she tries many imaginative ways to get "Little Colin" out of her head--but none of them work.

I really appreciated how Georgina matured over the course of the book, and comes to see the things that truly matter.

This book has it all, action, drama, and humor. I loved revisiting so many "friends" from the previous book, and the natural dialog. A wonderfully entertaining read from beginning to end!

A Treasure Concealed by Tracie Peterson ~ Review

A Treasure Concealed (Sapphire Brides #1)
Lucie's Review:

Emily Carver is tired of not having roots, of moving camp to camp in search of the elusive gold that her father seeks.

Her father is a good man, and he loves his wife and daughter dearly.  But he feels that God has a treasure waiting for him to find, and he has dedicated his life to finding it.

When Emily's father meets Caeden Thibault, a geologist working for the government, he invites Caeden to come and stay with him and his family.

Will Emily and her family discover where true treasure can be found?

I like Emily Carver, she is a strong and capable young woman who has learned to make the best of what life has given her, and loves her parents dearly. She is very worried about her mother, Nyola, who has been ill for sometime. The Older Timers love her cooking, and are always bringing things to trade for a homecooked meal.

I loved Nyola and her faith, she didn't even let her illness dampen her spirits and trust in the Lord. She prays constantly for her husband and daughter.

I liked the way that Caeden and Emily met. Caeden is an answer to Nyola's prayers, and I liked how he was present and willing to help when strange things began happening on the Carver property. He is a kind down-to-earth man, despite his fancy upbringing and he doesn't look down on the simpler accommodations that the Carver's offer him. I admired his concern for others, and the way that he acts on his intentions once he knows what he wants.

Overall, a well done storyline,  with a full cast of many interesting characters. I liked the faith journey of both Emily and Caeden. They both have wonderful mothers who prayer for them constantly, but they learned to make their faith their own, and grow into their faith. There was plenty of action, and great characters, along with moving dialog, and after I was hooked I didn't want to put it down!
