Calico Canyon by Mary Connealy // Celebrate Lit

About the Book

Book: Calico Canyon (Petticoats and Cowboys Book 2)

Author: Mary Connealy

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: April 28, 2026

From beloved author Mary Connealy comes a delightful Western adventure brimming with danger, laughter, and unexpected romance—a tale of a runaway teacher, a bewildered widower, and five rambunctious boys who need a mother whether they want one or not. Perfect for fans of Tracie Peterson and Karen Witemeyer.

Grace Calhoun never imagined teaching school in Texas would lead to marriage—especially not to the infuriating Daniel Reeves.

When Grace flees her adoptive father’s cruelty by hiding in a stranger’s wagon, the town parson insists on an immediate wedding, leaving Grace trapped in marriage to a stubborn widower with five unruly sons—the very boys who made her teaching job impossible.

Daniel Reeves has no intention of risking his heart—or another wife—to childbirth.

Still grieving the loss of his first wife, Daniel wants nothing to do with the prim schoolmarm forced into his family. He’ll build her a house and provide for her needs, but he’ll keep his distance. His sons need a mother, but he refuses to fall in love again.

Snowed in together for a long Texas winter, walls begin to crumble.

As Grace discovers the courage she thought she’d lost, she transforms from a frightened woman on the run to a fierce protector of her new family. The boys who once tormented her become the children of her heart. And the husband who swore to keep his distance? He’s finding it harder each day to resist his spirited wife.

But when Grace’s dangerous past catches up to her, she must choose between running again or standing firm in the faith that brought her to Calico Canyon—even if it costs her everything.

A tender tale of found family, healing love, and the faithfulness of God in the midst of life’s unexpected turns.

 Lucie's Review:

An accidental marriage of convenience.

Grace Calhoun escapes her abusive adoptive father in Daniel Reeves's wagon, but is forced into a marriage of convienience to Daniel Reeves the man who along with his 5 wild sons cost Grace her job. I liked how Grace makes the best of a bad situation, taking time to care for and teach the boys. Daniel is a busy man, who doesn't see a porblem with letting his boys "be boys." But I liked how he sees how Grace isn't strict out of cruelty, but out of care. It was fun getting to know the boys and see their different personalities come through.

A wild adventure full of faith, humor, action, and romance. A western, unlikely enemies-to-lovers marriage-of-convenience, read with a hilarious set up and likable characters, and strong faith. Great interaction and character growth, I liked how they both really leaned on their faith, and came to see each other in a different light.

Overall, an engaging read with a lot going on, strong faith, great characters, situational humor, and great interacton. Highly enjoyable read!

More from Mary

I think of Calico Canyon as my husband’s life growing up.

He is sixth of seven sons. A family of all boys.

His mom, my mother-in-law, was the coolest lady I’ve ever known. That woman could handle everything and never be other than sweet and generous and so funny. She’s gone now but for all the years she was in my life, I’d say she was my best friend.

All those boys! She was the living embodiment of rolling with the punches and not sweating the small stuff.

Those brothers…they are the inspiration for this book but my mother-in-law read it and said, her boys were so much better behaved than those boys in Calico Canyon, and she’s right about that…no boys could be worse than the Reeves boys.

This book is the embodiment of the forced marriage. Two people caught in a completely innocent compromising situation. Nothing will do but immediate marriage after Grace spends the night with Daniel.

But there were five boys in that cave with us!

Not gonna save you, Grace.

Grace is a school marm and those boys have been a torment to her ever since they’d shown up at school. Now, due to Grace needing to hide from her abusive, adoptive father, who has tracked her down to this tiny town in Texas, she’d ended up under a tarp over Daniel’s wagon. He takes her home and she has no choice but to stay quiet under that tarp until it’s too

late to take her back.

The wedding scene from Calico Canyon was, for many years, what I considered the funniest thing I’d ever written. Very hard work to get that scene right. Grace is confused when she’s found with Daniel by the parson. Oh, good. Someone who will give me a ride back to town.

The parson is saying the vows. Grace is happy to take a ride. The parson’s wife is urging the parson to hurry. Daniel is trying to put a stop to it. The boys are all horrified to see their hated teacher.

Mayhem ensues.

It was a lot of fun to get right. Lots of moving parts in that scene.

And then a blizzard snows the gap that leads into their canyon shut and they have to spend the winter trying not to kill each other. And of course, falling in love.

I hope you enjoy Calico Canyon. The fumbling, clueless cowboy. The innocent, befuddled school marm. The unruly boys who don’t see why she can’t cook and why she won’t go home.

The danger, circling the outside of their canyon, waiting for the gap to open so he can avenge himself on the daughter that send him to prison.

Survival in the Mountains by Carrie Stuart Parks // Review

Lucie's Review:

Pulled from a burning Bethany doesn't remember anything but her sister and being run off the road, answer become even more difficult to find when she and Joshua discover that her identity has been erased. With Bethany already in a killer's sights, it's a race against time to find answers.

A fast-paced thriller that keeps  you guessing, as Joshua and Bethany come to depend on each other, as they try to keep her safe and find out what is going on. Action packed that keeps you hanging on the edge. I liked how Joshua believes her even when no one else will, supporting her and and helping her find answers.

Overall, a wild ride, set in the mountains of Idaho, with an orginal plot and plenty of great interaction, faith, and suspense. A gripping adventure!

Lucie's Review:

Sierra is doesn't know what to do when the man she thought she buried comes back, after she's raised their son alone for ten years. Now someone wants her ranch, and will do anything to get her out of the way.

A fast paced read, full of revelations, with a second chance romance on a Colorado ranch. Sierra won't back down easily, and I admired her grit. An engaging read, with a lot going on, I liked the character interaction as Rowan and Sierra come to trust each other again. Rowan is respectful of Sierra's boundaries, and is ready to step up and help when needed.

A modern western romance, filled with action, suspense, faith and second chances. Great character growth, faith, and I was cheering for Rowan and Sierra all the way. Highly stakes, satisfying read!

Texas Cowboy Protector by Connie Queen // Review

Lucie's Review:

Texas Ranger Mallory Foster comes home to Cedar Hollow hoping to clear her late brother's name in a reopened cold case, coming face to face with her ex-fiance Sawyer Cantrell.

Sawyer sweeps back into Mallory's life, saving her young son from kidnapping. He suddenly finds out that the stakes are higher than he thought, and he steps up to help her find answers to her brother's death. Sawyer and Mallory make a good team, and I liked how supportive his family was and how he bonded with her son.

Mallory is determined to clear her brother's name, but also wants to keep her son safe at all costs. I liked how she has grown in faith, and that she and Sawyer  reconnect over their past and shared values.

Overall, a fast paced read, with great characters and a plot that drew me in. Great suspense, and relationship building. I listened to the audio book, and the narrator did a great job of converying the emotion and differentiating between all the many characters. Highly recommend!

All We Thought We Knew by Michelle Shocklee // Review

My Review:
Mattie Taylor returns to the family farm after 2 years away, still struggling with her brother's death in Vietnam. Her mother is fighting cancer and encourages her to learn the truth about who she is, and where she came from.

A compelling split time novel that follows two grieving women one in 1969 and another in 1942. Ava Delaney takes a job at Camp Forest to make some extra money and get her away from her overbearing mother-in-law, there she works and learns of the plight of many German internees found living in the US before the start of the war.

Ava is strong and knows when to hold her tongue, I liked that she was honest with herself and tried to get along with her mother-in-law. Gunther is a German medical student, who wants nothing more than to finish his training, but that is no longer an option with the world at war. I admired his steadiness and perseverance, not letting bitterness gain a foothold throughout all he suffered. I liked how he lived his beliefs and reached out in understanding others. A gripping story of faith, family, love, and resilience in the face of loss. Mattie is hurting, and she spent 2 years searching for something that she couldn't find after her brother's death. I liked Nash, and his steady patience with Mattie, and understanding for others.

A masterfully compelling split time novel, with complex characters and powerful story arcs, with a quiet mystery that kept me wondering right up to the end. A powerful story of faith, family and resilience. Highly recommend!

Silent Menace by Angela Carlisle // Review

Lucie's Review:

CPA Hailey Nieland is doing her best to build a life for herself and her daughter after the death of her huband, who embezzled money from the town. She is struggling to make ends meet in a small town, living in the shadow of her late husband's crimes. When a new account comes to her she finds strange discrepencies, but looking into them brings threats. She finds a friend in Peter Lewis, who is a former bodyguard who now works security. Together they work to keep her and her daughter safe, while finding answers.

A suspenseful read, with a thrilling plot, great tension, excellent interaction and character development. I admired Hailey's integrity and strong faith, as well as her courage to stand up to the judgement form those around her. Peter is a man of action, and I liked how he steps up to help Hailey, and bonds with her daughter through ASL.

Overall, a highly engaging read, with a riveting plot that kept me guessing, and characters that I could cheer for all the way through. Strong themes of faith, courage, and a budding new relationship. Highly recommend.

Gospel Education by Nate Walker // Review

My Review:

Mr. Walker shares his vision of a well-rounded classical Christian education in the form of a church private school. It is isn't a comprehensive how-to guide, but more of a vision of what it could look like and what it could mean for your child's education.

He walks through the purpose and joys of a classical education, as well as how each of the disciplines revolves around a life of faith. I think this could be a good read for someone pondering their children's education, and could be encouraging for someone thinking about enrolling their child, starting a school, or homeschooling their child. A good introducation to a classical Christian education, without being overwhelming or overbearing, it does a good job of showing what it could look like.

Overall, a conise and enlightening read. Good food for thought for parents, grandparents and teacher alike. I think that someone could definitely take parts of it and apply it to homeschooling as well. A thoughtful and knowledgeable read.

More Than Friends by Denise Hunter // Review

My Review:
Friends-to-lovers romance on the shores of Chincoteague.

Jenna returns home to Chincoteague Island after losing her job in a brutal break up. Coming back to the island brings up old feelings for a close friend, as she works to find a new grasp on life and adjust to seeing her mother in a new relationship. Tyson is healing from a shattering divorce, but happy to see Jenna return.

As they spend time together, they wonder if there could be more than friendship. A heartwarming small-town romance, on the stunning islands famous for their beautiful wild ponies. I admired Jenna for her determination to keep going, despite having everything swept away from her. She and her mother are close, and I liked how the story followed their relationship as well as Jenna's mom's new relationship with Gordon. I liked the warm chemistry between Jenna and Tyson, as they grew closer, and I liked how he dropped things to come and help her investigate.

Overall, a clean, heartwarming romance, with a satisfying plot in a gorgeous setting, and likable characters. Engaging and uplifting, this is a great feel-good read, with two characters that you can cheer for throughout.

Retribution in the Mountains by Jodie Bailey // Review

Lucie's Review:

Melanie knows that her witness protection cover is blown when a bomb goes off in her car, with nowhere to turn she goes to the only person who can help her, Elliot Weiss.

A fast paced suspense with a vast backstory, and likable protagonists. There is a lot going on, with a big backstory to unpack as well. Melanie and Elliot both need help moving on from the past, but the present reality is making it difficult.

I liked that Elliot has a talented and supportive team around him. It isn't easy for Melanie and Elliot to open up at first, but as they learn more of the deadly plot they must face the past, and trust God to see them through.

Overall, a well done read witn great tension and a riveting plot. Definitely recommend!

Joy of Heaven: Prayer of the Revivals edited by Robert Elmer // Review

My Review:

Pray along with the heroes of the faith in this beautifully bound collection of powerful prayers oragnized by topic.

A wonderful addition to daily devotions, it was so encouraging and inspiring to read through the prayers of great Christian leaders from the early 1700s through the 1900s, from times of revival. Among some of the authors are Jonathan Edwards, Andrew Murray, Charles and Susannah Spurgeon, George Whitefield, Amy Carmichael, and so many more. I felt like I have a lot to learn from those who have gone before about prayer, and I was most inspired by how boldly they prayed.

Gorgeously bound in a goldenrod linen bound hardcover, with a ribbon placemarker it makes a great addition to your library or is a beautiful and lasting gift to give someone you love. Highly enjoyable and inspiring.

An Unconvential Lady by Sarah E. Ladd // Review

Lucie's Review:

The story is a little slow to start as the plot is established. Ella Wilde wants to clear her mother's name from the shadow of disgrace she died under, with whispers of mental instability.

Ella was brought up in a world of science and exploration, and phrenology is all the rage, which is reading of head lumps, but Ella has her suspicions. A scientific symposium brings an old childhood friend back into Ella's life, and she and Gabriel join forces to prove the phrenologist a crock.

The story builds well, and I liked the relationship between Ella and Gabriel as they work together, building trust and coming to rely on each other. Gabriel is a good man, and I liked his determination to find the truth.

Overal, an engaging read with a good plot and likable characters. There is good interaction, and makes for a satisfying clean romance.

A Scattering of Light by Lori Benton // Review

My Review:

William Wallace Crockett is a Scottish drover wrongfully stolen away from his home and left for dead, his freedom sold for a pittance. Verity Wilde is a young Quaker woman, who has mercy on his situation taking him into her household.

A compelling story of betrayal, loss, and God's providence. Verity carries the weight of her brother's death, while helping her father in his business. Verity has dreams, as well as a big heart for others. Judah is a wise and loyal family member, who walks the line between his two heritages, I like dhis protectiveness of Verity and his friendship with Will.

A rugged and realistic view of early America, full of promise and hope in a wild and untamed land. Will is determined and hardworking, a clever young man full of dreams and the grit to make them come true. I liked how Jenny gently encourages him, while gracefully enduring the hardships as they came.

Overall, a compelling novel that takes us from the hills of Scotland to colonial Virginia. Filled with heartache, and loss, but also inspiring courage and sacrifice, with a solid core of faith. A well told story, that brings to life early America in a story of betrayal, faith, and hope. Definitely recommend.

The Rancher's Unlikely Match by Jill Kemerer // Review

Lucie's Review:

Fresh starts and new beginnings.

Widower Ben Wright has his hands full with his three children, farming, and coaching a baseball team, he doesn't have time to deal with the constantly escaping goats of his new neighbor, Jessica. Jessica moved home to reset and help revitalize the family farm.

A heartwarming grumpy-sunshine romance, with cute kids (of the human and goat kind), good interaction, and a small town community setting. I liked how the Wright kids befriend Jessica, and enjoy spending time with the goats.

A fun read, with an opposites attract romance. I like how they lowly start inviting each other into their lives in the everyday moments through all the craziness around them. Enjoyable and compelling, it has a lot going on, themes of faith and great interaction.

The Surprise Cowboy Dad by Deb Kastner // Review

Lucie's Review:

A marriage of convenience and a baby in need of love, can Henry and Charli be the parents Levi needs?

Henry suddenly has the care of his nephew thrust upon him, while Charli is in danger of losing the family ranch to her sister who want to sell. Charli has worked hard her whole life on the ranch, Henry has always been a good friend and supporter, working alongside her. Together they make a good team, and I like how they have open communication and he never hesitates to back her up.

An engaging read, with a friends-to-lovers romance, a great plot and family drama. I like how Charli gets to know her sisters better, and how everyone loves little Levi.

A heartwarming read, with great interaction, strong, likable characters. Levi is so adorable! A highly enjoyable read.

The Liar's Treasure by Connie Mann // Review

Lucie's Review:

A high stakes treasure hunt, filled with suspense, as this mother daughter duo work to uncover the Liar's Treasure before the other treasure hunters close in.

The second in a series, it probably helps if you read the series in order, but the adventure is brand new. There is a lot going on, with a realistic relationship between mother and daughter. A fast paced read, that goes all over the world as they gather relics and follow the clues to beat out the other treasure hunters. High tension, with great characters, but I didn't like how we follow the bad guys so much.

It was fun to see the members of Speranza working together in their different specialties. Camille must risk it all to keep her daughter safe, and I admired her quicking thinking and courage. I was uncomfortable with how much stuff they stole along the way, but the mystery around the relics kept me guessing.

Overall, an engaging read that kept me guessing, with great tension and truly high stakes. Camille fights to keep the faith as she goes against the odds to capture The Liar's Treasure.

My Review:

A Bible truly made for an immersive study and journaling experience, spiral-bound so it lays flat on the table, with wide margins for notes, with an open layout, comprehensive outlines, full color key verse illustrations, reading logs, with maps and timelines.

It measures 11 1/4 X 10 1/2 X 1 3/8 inches, so it is a heftier Bible and not the easiest to take with you to church, and the edition I have is the only New Testament, while 5 volumes make up the entire Bible. But don't let the size scare you, because this has many features that make it well worth the size. I think my favorite thing is that I can truly lay it completely flat on my table, making it great for making cross references or taking notes. The cover is durable, and the pages are thicker to complement and hold up to the spiral-binding, as well as hold up better to drawings, highlighting, as well as takes the color from colored pencils better. It has complete footnotes, and I liked how the Old Testament references were bolded for easy recognition. There are also empty pages in the back for more notes, or artwork. The 10 point font is easy to read, and the wide margins are perfect for notes.

The introductions to the books include a map on the other side, give context to the book as well as information on the author, and topics touched upon. I really enjoyed using this Bible, and how the designers really went all the way, leaning into making it durable, and accessable for notes, journaling and artwork. A beautiful gift for someone you love or for yourself!

Heiress of Nowhere by Stacey Lee // Review

My Review:
Lucy is getting up the courage to leave island life behind for university, when suddenly her benefactor is found decapitated on the beach and she is the heiress of his vast fortune. Orphaned at a young age, she decides to pursue answers about her lost family and finds that it may be tied to her benefactor's death, meanwhile she begins to emerge as a leading suspect in the murder.

An engaging historical read that delves into fantasy, with mystery and gothic vibes. Lucy Nowhere is a heroine who has responsibility thrust upon her, she finds herself walking a tight rope trying to stay one step ahead of the killer, while finding the answers that could unlock her origins. A swirling suspense, in which one is never sure of whom to trust. While Lucy also finds her heart pulled by two very different men. I admired Lucy for her quick thinking and courage in the face of danger. She is gutsy and willing to be a leader in high stakes situations.

There is plenty going on, and the plot was well paced and riveting. I liked how it kept me guessing with the will they or won't they, and who can she trust? A gothic historical romance, with a love triangle and a high stakes murder plot. There are some instances of strong language, but for the most part it is appropriate for mid to older teens with PG-13 content. Another wonderful read from one of my favorite authors!

A Sea View Christmas by Julie Klassen // Review

My Review:

Celebrate the holidays in Sidmouth in this final installment On Devonshire Shores.

Sarah is torn between a chance at happiness and duty, when the handsome widower Callum Henshaw and his daughter return for a visit. Meanwhile, Georgiana is excited for Christmas surrounded by friends and is determined to help a displaced orphan while a friendship deepens into the possibility of something more.

A heartwarming return to the shores of Devonshire, Sarah is happy to see two of her sisters settled and is adjusting to the changes at the inn. But Mr. Henshaw stirs hopes and questions of an uncertain future path.

A gently compelling story, that in my mind is a lovely original blend of Little Women and Cranford or Downtown Abbey. I love how we follow multiple characters through their lives and everyday events and challenges. Georgiana is the youngest, and growing into a young woman, she has a heart for others and is always trying to help out, even if in unexpected ways.

A thoroughly enjoyable read full of heart and love for home, with themes of trusting God and new beginnings. Wonderful, captivating characters, I have so enjoyed reading their stories through this fantastic series. Highly recommend.

The Rancher's Stolen Past by Tabitha Bouldin // Review

Lucie's Review:

Zane comes home to support his family and work on the ranch, doing so brings him face to face with his best friend's widow. Molly is hesitant to trust Zane, but her young son has fallen in love with riding, so she agrees to work with Zane to pay for her son's riding lessons. Can a shared past, help heal their future?

A heartwarming read, with likable characters and good interaction. I liked how Zane and Molly reconnected and rekindled their friendship after many years apart. Luke is a smart young boy, I liked how he and Zane bonded over Luke's father and the horses.

Both Zane and Molly are Christians, but are challenged to grow in their faith. I really liked the ranch setting, and how wonderful and supportive Molly's family is.

Overall, a heartwarming romance, with strong characters, a cute kid, and an engaging plot. A faith filled read, full of friendship, healing, family, and giving love a chance.

The Lumber Baron's Wife by Lynn Austin // Review

My Review:

A gorgeous historical house with a mysterious legacy, set in a white pine logging town in Michigan, holds secrets that bind three women from the past and from the present in this captivating dual timeline novel of God's deep and unfathomable love.

In the past Hannah and her doctor husband John move to Michigan in hopes of a new beginning after losing their 3 children to tragedy, at the request of John's war buddy, Lumber Baron Henry Abernathy. Hannah is tasked with teaching Henry's young wife how to behave in polite society, but she believes her aching heart has little to give.

In the present-day Ashley and her new husband David, struggle to find a home and common ground that they previously thought was so plentiful. Ashley is drawn to investigating the history behind the Abernathy home after being invited to join the community in reviving a once stately historical mansion.

Hannah had everything until tragedy took it away, now starting over putting up with the childish antics of Kate Abernathy is the last thing that she thinks she needs. I liked how Hannah was patient with Kate, kindly showing her the correct way to things are done even if it was begrudgingly at first. Kate and Hannah are very different, but I liked how they found common ground and purpose in helping others. Hannah was probably my favorite character, not your typical protagonist, grieving and struggling to trust God, while putting one foot in front of the other and doing the next thing in front of her. I admired how John was tender, supportive of and patient with her.

Ashley in the present day is faced with a different set of challenges, but I liked her willingness and passion for the project. Despite their differences, Ashley and David have a deep love for each other. Freida is a spry older woman who brought her community to them, welcoming them with open arms, offering friendship and no condemnation.

A riveting read, that walks the line between 2 timelines, with complex characters against the ruthless and once beautiful white pines of Michigan. The book does a great job of drawing you into the lives of three very different women, unwinding their lives and delving into their relationships, revealing a beautiful and shining truth. Compelling and memorable.

Highly recommend! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

A Wager with the Matchmaker by Jody Hedlund // Review

My Review:
A wealthy business owner in search of a moneyed wife with a hefty dowery. A maid who needs to escape the clutches of a violent gang. Bellamy the matchmaker makes a wager.

Alannah can scarcely believe her ears when the matchmaker suggests the son of her employer as a match, but she promises to give it a chance. Keiran wants to make an advantageous match, but cannot find someone that suits him, except for a woman who is completely out of the question.

Sparks fly in this chemistry filled historical romance; I loved seeing more of the Shanahan family and getting more insight into the character of Bellamy. Alannah and Keiran are likable characters, with a sweet and honest connection. I really liked Keiran's sister, Zaira and can't wait to read more about her in the next book!

Overall, an enjoyable read with a good place and plot. Good chemistry, with closed door sizzle. A lovely addition to the series, that is hard to put down!

A Brewed Awakening by Pepper Basham // Review

My Review:
A fun flirty food battle brings together a small town in this Jane Austen loving foodie, opposites attract romance.

Daphne Austen is surprised to find that her Jane Austen themed tea shop's new neighbor is a tea-hating British single dad, opening a pub style restaurant. Daphne is upbeat and creative, slowly working to introduce her own creations to her inherited tea shop. She is marvelous with children, and I liked the banter between her and her brother Jack, as well as her new neighbor Finn Dashwood. Finn is a hardworking single father who wants to give his young daughter a solid upbringing.

Such a fun read, with all the hilarious hashtags as part of the food battle, and grumpy-sunshine interactions. I loved how Daphne and Finn embraced the opportunity to boost their small businesses and lean into the attention as the town takes sides and stirs the fires. A lighthearted read, with a full cast of delightful characters, great interactions and a solid helping of faith.

Overall, it's a fun flirty read, with great characters and a small-town setting in the heart of Appalachia. Filled with humor, sweet moments, and witty banter, infused with a love of British literature. A satisfying upbeat rom-com, sure to bring a smile to your face!

My Review of The Blobs: Attack of the Glitchies

Picking up right where the previous book left off, Cadetski and his friends are making the most of their new home. They tried to warn the Blob Force about the doomsicles, to no advail. Now King Neptune is coming to reclaim the doomsicles.

A fun follow up, filled with humor and a high stakes plot. The same characters return, in this hilarious adventure as they are challenged to fight evil power with sacrifice. I liked how Chubs, has a heart for others, and it was fun seeing him take to his new home and make new friends.

Pick up The Blobs: Crash Landing before vol.2 comes out!

My Review of The Blobs: Crash Landing:

Upon notice that they must immediately evacuate their home planet, the Blobs are sent in pods to their new home, along the way this ragtag crew crash lands on a strange planet and stirs up more trouble than they bargained for.

Blob Force wannabe Cadetski leads his unlikely crew through unknown dangers and learns a lesson about telling the truth. Filled with fitting cartoon style illustrations, this book is written for confident young readers. It has a larger easy to read font, but a creative and inventive vocabulary that could trip up children new to chapter books. Great for kids who have graduated from beginner chapter books and are looking for something between that and the next step.

Clean fun humor, and a hilarious, unlikely team of characters. Together they learn to work together, facing fears and finding 1friendship. One of my favorite characters is Chubs and his adorable and helpful plant robot.

A fast-paced adventure, full of unexpected twists and kid-friendly humor. Imaginative clean fun, I'm excited to see where the series goes!

Petticoat Ranch by Mary Connealy // Celebrate Lit

About the Book

Book: Petticoat Ranch

Author: Mary Connealy

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: March 10, 2026

From beloved author Mary Connealy comes a delightful Western adventure brimming with danger, laughter, and unexpected romance—a tale of a resourceful widow, a rugged cowboy, and the ready-made family that will steal his heart. Perfect for fans of Tracie Peterson and Karen Witemeyer.

Sophie Edwards has survived two years in the Texas wilderness with four daughters and her wits. When a stranger falls injured near her hidden cabin during a thunderstorm, she discovers he’s the spitting image of her late husband—because Clay McClellen is her husband’s twin brother, a man who never knew his brother existed.

Clay came to Texas seeking justice for his brother’s murder. What he finds instead is a ready-made family, a rundown ranch, and a fiercely independent woman who doesn’t need rescuing—even when danger comes calling. Sophie may have pulled him from a flooded creek, but Clay is determined to be the protector she deserves, whether she wants one or not.

As vigilantes close in and old enemies resurface, Clay and Sophie must learn to trust each other and God’s plan. But can a mountain man used to solitude embrace life with four talkative daughters? And can Sophie open her guarded heart to love again—especially when the man looks exactly like the husband who broke it?

A heartwarming tale of second chances, faith, and finding love in the untamed West.

Lucie's Review:

Sophie and her daughters rescue an injured man near their property, to her shock they find that he is her late husband's twin brother, Clay. Sophie is fiercely independent, raising her 4 young daughters, determined not to take help from anyone. Clay wants to do right by his brothers children and widow, he steps in and up, despite Sophie's protests.

A fast paced western rom-com, with an enemies to lovers marriage of convenience, adorable children, faith, with a lot going on. Sophie is a capable woman, with a lot on her plate. Clay is in uncharted territory, with Sophie, the girls, and the ranch. He's a good man, he wants to do the right thing, but is way out of his depth. I liked to see Sophie and Clay work through their differences, and find that they are stronger together.

A heartwarming read, with comedy and miscommunications galore. An entertaining read, there is a lot going on, with likable characters and cute children, in this fun-filled western adventure.

More from Mary

Petticoat Ranch is my husband’s story.

My husband is a cowboy…or rather he’s a Nebraska cattleman. Our ‘horse’ though we used to have horses, is now a pick-up truck and a four-wheeled rig that can crawl all over rugged land.

My Cowboy grew up in a family of seven sons.

His mom was about the coolest, nicest lady ever born…a living embodiment of ‘Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.’ She could tell stories of chaos and mayhem for HOURS and just laugh. I loved her.

Then I married My Cowboy and we had FOUR DAUGHTERS.

My husband spent his whole life confused.

And example of a usual conversation:

My Cowboy: Why won’t they stop crying!?

Why won’t they stop giggling?

Why won’t they stop TALKING?

Me: Um, cuz they’re girls?

He was constantly befuddled. He loved them (still does) so madly but they did NOT make sense to him.

That’s Petticoat Ranch.

A mountain man comes to find his brother’s wife…his brother died and he’s come to ‘rescue’ them. Except they’re unbelievable tough and competent and, well, maybe they could use a little rescuing, life is tough in Texas for a widow and her four children and, in a weak moment, she agrees to marry this man who looks EXACTLY like her husband. A man she never knew existed.

And there they are. Her and her four tough Texas daughters.

Him who’s pretty much never seen a woman in his life, and certainly not a CHILD.

Now they’re married about twenty-four hours after she found out he existed…and they have to figure out how to get along.

I try really hard to thread that needle where a man is befuddled by a woman…but he’s not stupid. A woman is exasperated by a man…but she’s got a good heart.

I shove them together…and leave them to try and get along. If someone is trying to kill them, or steal their ranch, or whatever horrible outlaw is in the book, that adds to the fun.

I shove them together and then leave them to figure out how to get along.

I love Petticoat Ranch. I’ve done this kind of book many times, the mountain man who’s never been around women. The feisty lady rancher who’s used to being in charge. And never did I find that sweet spot quite as well as I did in Petticoat Ranch.

One of my very favorite books.

Ah, tough, self-sufficient Sophie. She really can use the help and he really does look exactly like her dead husband.

Ah, confused but definitely attracted Clay. He’s trying to take care of her and take charge…and she’s not cooperating.

She was definitely in charge when his brother was alive…he was kinda cranky and inept. Why won’t Clay just let her run things?

All those tough little Texas cowgirl daughters who can’t quite figure out if this is they’re pa, given back to them by God…or if this is some new guy that they are desperate to make love them, when their real pa was so desperate to have sons.

I love that Wild Heart Books is re-releasing Petticoat Ranch.

Thank you Wild Heart for giving it another chance at life.
