All God's Children by Anna Schmidt ~ Review

All God's Children (The Peacemakers, #1)

Review:
Beth has lived in Germany for eight years, and she has learned to blend in speaking and dressing like a German, but the one thing that hasn't change is her American way of thinking and her tender heart. Beth cannot leave the country because she gave away her visa to a friend who needed to leave the country.
Beth has been living with her uncle and aunt, helping to care for Liesl, her beloved niece. One day her uncle brings home a former student, Josef, to come an live in their attic while he finishes medical school. Josef is fluent in English because he attended college in Boston, but he serves the Germans now as a medic.
Beth and Josef grow close, and join a resistance group known as the "White Rose." When Josef is arrested for his anti-Nazi activities, Beth does the unthinkable, marrying him and sharing in his concentration camp sentence.

This was a wonderful book, that accurately portrayed life in Germany during WWII, with meticulously done research that enriched the book. This story told the story of the bravery and sacrifice of heroes, who endured the unimaginable in the concentration camps. This book did a good job of accurately telling of the horrors and inhumane treatment that the prisoners of the centration camps suffered, yet it was described in a way where I got a full sense of the levity of the situation, yet it wasn't too overwhelming.

So much of this book is based on true historical events, I feel like I learned so much. The author took such a sad, horrific time in history and told a compelling story glistening with rays of hope that kept me reading. The story was so much more inspiring because it was based on true events.

Josef was a good honorable, intelligent man, who doesn't just stand by but was willing to take action to save his country. There was depth and internal struggle to his character, because he wanted more than anything to protect Beth and keep her safe, even though she insisted upon staying at his side.

Beth was a beautiful woman inside and out, willing to make large sacrifices with no second thought to her own safety, putting others first. At first I thought she was insane for staying by Josef's side and into the concentration camp, but at the same time I immensely admired her loyalty. Their relationship was truly tested and refined by fire till it rang true.

One thing that was interesting was that Beth and her family were Quakers, and that backround made her good at being still before God and seeking his guidance. Her faith saw her through so much. But because Quakers focus on looking "in" rather than looking to God's word I felt that a very important foundation of faith was missing.

Faith, hope & love are strong themes in this book, as Josef and Beth were tested to the brink. There was a full cast of characters who added color and depth to the story. When I picked this book up I was afraid that it would be terribly depressing but instead it was utterly engaging full of action, suspense, danger, drama, and touches of humor, as well as a realistic view of what the German's did in Germany and elsewhere. Definitely a book that I would highly recommend.

This book was given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review, through Netgalley.

One Realm Beyond by Donita K. Paul ~ Review

 Leo's Review:

One Realm Beyond (Realm Walkers)Cantor is one of the gift realm walkers, blessed and cursed with the gift to walk the line between realms. But through the years the Realm Walkers Guild has become corrupt and there are those who masquerade about as if they were realm walkers.
One of the first things Cantor must do is find a dragon constant to help him on his quests. Cantor finds a young dragon, Bridger who desperately wants to be Cantors constant.
With the help of his new friends, Bixby and Dumkee, and his dragon constant Bridger, Cantor prepares to embark on the greatest adventure of his life.

An action filled adventure, with engaging characters. One of my favorites was Bridger the dragon, who was so gifted just like Cantor with ever helpful spirit and a charmingly determined attitude.

Overall this was a great start to what is sure to be a great adventure, and a great book for fans of Donita K. Paul!

The Strait of Hormuz by Davis Bunn ~ Review

Strait of Hormuz

Astor's Review:

Global tensions are high, and the threat of an Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz hovers over their heads.
Marc Royce and Kitra Korban team up to get to the bottom of it, but with Iran on the brink of nuclear weapon capability, time is running out.

Filled with intrigue and fast pacing this was the third in a series, yet I was able to jump right in even though I hadn't read the previous books. Though it was a bit hard to figure out where he stood in his relationship to Kitra without having read the first few books.

This was a terrific military thriller with plenty of adventure written in a hard to put down style. Now that I am finished with this one I fully intend to go back and read the first two!

Every chapter was filled with action, adventure, and plenty of explosions! Definitely a great read, especially if you HAVE read the first books in the series!

Claiming the Cowboy's Heart by Linda Ford ~ Review

Claiming the Cowboy's Heart

Lucie's Review:
Jayne is determined to learn how to shoot a gun, but there is nobody willing to help her, she decides to go and try it on her own. But her shooting adventure goes wrong when she accidently hits a cowboy who was minding his own business, called Seth.
Seth believes someone is out to get him, so he gets on his horse and rides away, but can only make it so far. Later Jayne's brother finds Seth and brings him home with him.
And one of the first things he is determined to do while he is stuck in Eden Valley is teach Jayne how to shoot properly!

Another addition to the popular Cowboys of Eden Valley, brings back many of the wonderful side characters like the hugging cook and her preacher husband.

This was a good read, though not quite hooking me the way I would have liked, and I don't really know why because I typically love these kind of books.

Overall this was good book, and while it didn't quite hook me it would be a good one to read if you are a fan of the series. It had positive themes of faith, and it really picked up near the end.

Plain Peace by Beth Wiseman ~ Review

Plain Peace (A Daughters of the Promise Novel)

Lucie's Review:
Anna's grandfather is the strictest bishop the district has ever had, and that strictness begins at home.
Jacob's family has just moved from their home district to get away from any lingering memories that remind them of their loss.
Anna likes Jacob right away, but she overhears the other young men of the community warning him off, and telling him that Anna is "undateable" because of her overbearing grandfather. Anna is determined to change that perception, so she asks Jacob to the next singing, but because of unforeseen circumstances they never quite make it to the singing, and as a result Anna is forbidden from ever seeing Jacob again.

Plain Peace brings back many familiar faces and introduces us to new ones as well, I liked Marianne, Anna's grandmother who has the kindest of hearts, and more than a few secrets as well.

This book has mystery, and romance with many intertwining plotlines that join and pull apart, weaving a rich tale of depth and community. The setting is realistic, and the dialogue brings that characters to life!

Overall, this was a heartwarming read that brings the message of forgiveness and the great gift of God's forgiveness. A terrific book!

His Ideal Match by Arlene James ~ Review

His Ideal MatchReview:

Phillip Chatam had spent his life going from one job to another. He is always looking for the next big adventure, never staying in one place for long. But he knows that he can always return to Chatam house, if he needs to take a break and a place to stay.
Carissa Hopper has always lived paycheck to paycheck trying to support her three children after the loss of her husband, the house, and now her business. She has nowhere to go, but Chatam house where her aunt and uncle work.

I liked Phillip from the very beginning because he was willing to just jump in and help Carissa in anyway that he could, and quickly befriends her children, Tucker and Grace, even though it takes awhile for her oldest, Nathan to warm to him.

Carissa and Phillip have an elastic relationship, they are drawn to one another, but then one pulls back, causing the other to pull back as well. And they both struggle with their insecurities and not feeling "good enough."

There are plenty of wonderful side characters, that really brought the story to life and if you have read any of the previous books in the series you will love and recognize them. I especially loved Phillip's dear Aunt Odelia.

This was a great book, with great distinctly individual characters that worm their way into your heart.
This book captures both the grief-filled moments and the joyous ones alike, making for a well balanced heart-warming read!

Pioneer Christmas by Kathleen Fuller, Vickie McDonough, Lauraine Snelling, Margaret Brownley, Marcia Gruver, Cynthia Hickey, Shannon McNear, Michelle Ule, and Anna Carrie Urquhart ~ Review

A Pioneer Christmas Collection: 9 Stories of Finding Shelter and Love in a Wintry Frontier
Lucie's Review:

This collection of heartwarming Christmas love stories span a wide range of time and place, from the Revolutionary War and the Alaska Gold Rush, to homesteads in Dakota Territory to a ranch in Arizona. This collection has both fast-paced stories, and a wide variety, making it a book sure to please!

All of the stories have strong themes of faith, love, and Christmas, interwoven throughout as well as other messages of loving your enemies and holding onto faith in the midst of loss.

The Calling was one of the most symbolic about a young couple making their way to an inn for Christmas. One of my favorite stories was A Pony Express Christmas!

The Christmas Castle, The Cowboy's Angel, A Badland's Christmas are all stories with strong, honorable cowboys. The Buckskin Bride also had a fantastic and persistent hero, who could really pull on the charm by pulling out his Irish accent!

Another of my favorite's was The Gold Rush Bride, about twins Samantha and Peter, and their friend Miles who travel to Alaska to find Samantha and Peter's father. The setting was beautiful and dangerous, and very realistic to what they would have had to face.

Overall a terrific collection of wonderful stories. I enjoyed every single one. A terrific Christmas gift for you or a friend :)

Glittering Promises by Lisa Tawn Bergren ~ Review

Glittering Promises (Grand Tour Series, #3)
Cora Kensington has travelled Europe with her newfound family, but as their journey draws to a close, Cora must make a decision about who she really is and what path she will choose for her future. All the while she is being pursued by journalists who want to know everything about her because they believe they have found the story of the century with Cora's real life Cinderella story. Cora must come to terms with who she truly is, and where she came from, while trying to protect those who have become dear to her, while not hurting the friend who has stood by her side through it all.
A thrilling conclusion to Ms. Bergren's fantastic Grand Tour Series, with many hidden and unexpected twists along the way. Glittering Promises weaves an intriguing web, that comes together beautifully in unexpected ways.

I would definitely recommend reading the entire series in order, because this book picks up right where the second book left off making it perfect for someone who has read the whole series. but a tougher start for someone who hasn't read the whole story from the beginning.

Cora is a strong heroine, with tough decisions ahead of her. She is easy to connect with and the kind of heroine that you immediately cheer for and continue to cheer for throughout. And I have adored Will from the very beginning, he is steady and loyal, yet strong and even his flaws make him a better hero.

I loved how this book told the story not just through Cora's eyes, but every once in a while I was shown the story from Will's angle which added a depth to the story, and added a believable objectiveness of sorts to it.

Overall this is an excellent conclusion to a terrific series as Cora finds where her true identity lies, and comes to terms with her father and the past. A thrilling story filled with romance, adventure, in a way that evokes Downton Upstairs Downstairs, or the Forsytes but in a much more positive light!

Sadie's Secret by Kathleen Y'Barbo ~ Review

Sadie's Secret (The Secret Lives of Will Tucker, #3)

Lucie's Review:

Sadie Callum is good at what she does. In her job with the Pinkerton Agency she uses her education and training to solve cases, and see justice dealt. That's what she did for Will Tucker. However it has come to the attention of the Pinkertons that the Will Tucker behind bars is not the same one initially arrested, so it is up to Sadie to find out which Will Tucker is which.
Jefferson Tucker is a man of faith who works for the London Bureau of Investigation, and has been wrongfully imprisoned in the place of his identical twin, Will Tucker.
Jefferson and Sadie must work together to get everything straightened out.

This story is both a mystery and a romance, but it does take awhile to get there. Sadie and Jefferson interact well with each other, their communication is natural. And many of the characters from the previous books return, as this adventure takes Sadie and Jefferson across the country, with a very realistic setting.

Overall, this is a winding adventure full of secrets that are slowly revealed over the course of the story, and this book provides a good conclusion to the lives of Will Tucker.

Treacherous Slopes by Terri Reed ~ Review

Treacherous SlopesAstor's Review:

Nick Walsh is gearing up for the Ski Jump competition of his life, with one thing in mind to win gold for his late brother. But when reporter Julie Frost insists on writing a story on him, it complicates things. Nick has never liked reporters since his brother's death when reporters made his brother out to be a drug addict, and falsely smeared his brother's name on every newspaper sports section.
But suddenly new evidence comes to light that could clear and Nick's brother and lead them to an even more frightening truth.

Full of suspense and mystery, Treacherous Slopes makes for a hard to put down read with two great main characters that were very well developed.

Nick struggles with coming to terms with his brother's death and the aftermath in the media. And in Julie he meets his match.

I don't want to give too much away, but this was a terrific read, perfect for getting you excited for the upcoming Sochi 2014 Olympics! I would definitely recommend this book because of it's great message and plot that made it nearly impossible to put down!

Sugarplum Homecoming by Linda Goodnight ~ Review

Sugarplum Homecoming

Lucie's Review:
Lana Ross grew up in Whisper Falls, and left as soon as she could never planning to return, but now she needs a safe place for her and her niece Sydney to start over. Sydney is the daughter of Lana's twin sister Tess, but Lana is raising her as her own, and Lana will do whatever it takes to give Sydney a better life, even if it means returning to her hometown where many painful memories lie.

I loved Lana's story because it showed a drastic change in her choices and how giving her life over to Christ had a real, lasting impact on her lifestyle and choices. Lana still struggles with the consequences of her past, and she is still learning, but her faith is genuine and strong, and she looks to God for courage. Lana owns up to her past, maybe too much, but her journey felt real and compelling.

I really like Davis too, he is widower with 2 children, Nathan and Paige, who have decided that they need a mother.

This was such a sweet book, with great characters who interacted well with each other and formed natural bonds. If you have read the previous books in this series you will recognize the town and the side characters like Miss Evelyn and Uncle Digger. A wonderful book to get you ready and roaring for Christmas!

Return of the Cowboy Doctor by Lacy Williams ~ Review

Return of the Cowboy DoctorLucie's Review:

Maxwell White is a man with great potential, the one thing that he doesn't have is money, two years shy of a medical degree. So he returns home to his family's ranch in Wyoming, but on the first day back in town a man gets shot and Max offers to help him, and that is how he meets the doctor's daughter, Hattie.
Hattie has been assisting her father since she was a little girl, and longed to become a doctor herself, but when her father asks Max to help out at the clinic she becomes jealous and sees him as a rival. But can their healing talents bring them together instead?

Max is a terrific hero, with a wonderful family that always sets him straight. I loved how Max was willing to fight for his love's dreams even if she didn't see him in it, and he never gave up.

This was a great story that moved at a steady pace, with great dialogue. The setting was well done and realistic. I always love revisiting the White family to see how they've grown. By the end I think my favorite character was Max, because he never gave up! Great book!

Rebellious Heart by Jody Hedlund ~ Review

Rebellious Heart

Review:

When poor lawyer Benjamin Ross finds Susanna in a the library reading, during a party he can't help but be impressed at her intelligence, even though he remembers her as a stuck up rich girl. He soon finds that she is a smart woman, with a heart for the less fortunate who runs a school for the daughters of widows.
Though at first they seem an unlikely team, Ben and Susanna come to admire and respect the other as they work together to prove a man everyone believes to be guilty, and innocent man.

Both Susanna and Ben are strong, compassionate, and God-fearing. They both are well developed and admirable characters. Susanna was more concerned about what she could do to help others, than other people thought of her. Ben was an honorable man with a keen mind, who was willing to listen to counsel from the mentors in his life.

This book had so much going on, full of mystery, suspense, and drama.  The dialogue between Susanna and Ben was one of my favorite things because it was so natural and showed rather than told the slow but steady growth of their relationship. I also loved how they wrote letters to each other with code names.

The setting was well researched, and I felt that this book did a great job of showing the social and political tensions leading up to the Revolutionary War.

Overall this was a terrific novel, in which the historical setting was brought to live before my eyes. Furthermore, Ben and Susanna were definitely the kind of heroes that I could cheer for, totally worth knowing and emulating. A wonderful book that celebrates the faith, courage, and intelligence that this country was founded on.

The Promise by Glorious Films Review + Giveaway!

My Review:

A well written musical that so accurately brings to life the events surrounding Jesus' birth. Some of the songs were taken word for word from scripture! I could tell that the makers of this film paid close attention to detail really thought about what it would have been like back then going through what they did.

Zacharias was portrayed in a fun way, because he couldn't speak for quite some time, and I liked how they had fun with that in a tasteful way.

Overall this was a lovely production that did a fantastic job portraying Christ's birth and with well written melodies song in beautiful melding harmonies that evoked the emotion of Christmas. My favorite part was when the angels appeared to the shepherds and then they went to sing to Jesus and tell the town.
I would definitely say that this would be a movie worth seeing.

Excerpt:

I was born believing that the world was unfair and that I was the person to make it right.

One of my earliest memories is of Papa setting me atop a nail keg in the forge; I could not
have been older than two at the time.

“Colette, give Papa a kiss,” he said, tapping his cheek.

“Why?”

“Come and sit on my knee.”

“Why?”

My response to every order was the same, asked with genuine curiosity. I did not understand
why his watching friends chuckled. Why should I press my lips to Papa’s sweaty, prickly cheek?
Why should I hop down from the keg, where he had just placed me, and run to sit on his knee,
a most uncomfortable perch? I felt justified in requesting a reason for each abrupt order, yet he
never bothered to give me one.

Mama, when thus questioned, provided an answer in the form of a sharp swat. This I could
respect as definitive authority, although the reasoning behind it remained dubious.

My little brother Pascoe was born believing that the world was his to command. As soon
as he acquired his first vocabulary word, “No,” he and I joined ranks in defiance of established
authority.

Many impediments cluttered the path of destiny in those early years: parents, thirteen other
siblings, physical ailments, and educational difficulties. And as we grew into adulthood, more
serious matters intervened, even parting us for a time. But I will speak more of that later. For
now, let me assure you that, no matter the obstacles thrown in our way, our sibling bond seemed
indissoluble; the love between us remained unaffected by any outside relationship.

Pascoe and I were young adults when revolutionaries in Paris threw aside the tyranny of
centuries and established a new government based on the Rights of Man.From the seclusion of
our little village in Normandy we rejoiced over each battle fought and won; and when our local
physician, Doctor Hilliard, who had first mentored then employed Pascoe for several years, was
elected as deputy to the National Assembly from our district, a whole new world opened at our feet.

My story truly begins on a certain day in the spring of 1792, in the little domain I had made
for myself in the kitchen at the back of Doctor Hilliard’s Paris house. Perhaps it wasn’t truly my
domain, for it did not belong to me. I was merely the doctor’s housekeeper and could lay no real
claim. Nevertheless, the kitchen was more mine than anything had ever been, and I loved that
small, dark room; especially during the hours when sunlight slanted through the bubbled-glass
kitchen windows, making bright, swirling shapes on the whitewashed walls, or each evening
when I arranged my latest culinary creation on a platter and left it in the warming oven for the
doctor to discover whenever he arrived home. That kitchen was my home. Not the home I had
gorwn up in, but the home that I had always craved.

On that particular day, however, it did not feel the safe haven I had always believed it to be.
Loud voices drifted down from the upper floor where the doctor and Pascoe were in conference,
disturbing my calm. When I closed the connecting door to the dining room, the angry voices
drifted in through the open kitchen windows. I couldn’t close the windows; I might smother of heat. Yet I needed to block out the sound, to make it stop.

So I slipped a filet of sole into a greased skillet and let it brown until golden on both sides.
The hiss and sizzle did not quite cover the shouting, but it helped. Then I slid the fish onto a
waiting plate lined with sautéed vegetables fresh from my kitchen garden; and I topped all with
an herbed wine-and-butter sauce. A grind of fresh pepper finished off my creation.

But my hands were still trembling, and I felt as if something inside me might fall to pieces.

Pascoe often shouted. Shouting was part of his fiery nature, a normal event. He shouted when
he gave speeches at section meetings. He shouted about overcooked meals or inferior wines. He shouted when his lace jabot refused to fall into perfect folds.

But never before had I heard Doctor Hilliard raise his voice in anger.

Doctor Hilliard was never angry. Doctor Hilliard never displayed emotion. At most, he might
indicate approval by the glance of a benevolent eye or disapprobation by the merest lift of a
brow. Yet there could be no mistaking the two furious voices overhead. I well knew Pascoe’s
sharp tenor with its sarcastic edge; but now I also heard the doctor’s resonant voice crackling with fury.

I managed to slide the hot plate into the warmer alongside a crusty loaf of bread and closed the door, using a doubled towel to protect my shaking hands.

Behind me the connecting door was flung open, and Pascoe burst in as I spun to face him.
“Gather your things; we are leaving,” he growled. His eyes blazed in his pale face, and the jut
of his jaw allowed for no questions. He clapped his tall hat on his head as he passed through the
room.

I donned my bonnet and sabots and picked up my parasol. “What has happened?” I asked just
above a whisper.

“I’ll tell you once we are away from this house.” His lips snapped tight. His chest heaved
with emotion, and he grasped a portfolio so tightly that his fingers looked white.

I could not recall the last time I had seen my brother in such a rage.

The First Christmas Night by Keith Christopher, illustrated by Christine Kornacki ~ Review + Giveaway!

The First Christmas Night

My Review:

A stunning book from cover to cover, every rhyme and every illustration, beautifully told the story of Christ's birth.

I loved how it took the meter from that traditional poem the "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and told the true Christmas Story. This book was so well done from the illustrations to the wording of the poem that I couldn't help thinking that will definitely become a classic in our family.

What a truly lovely way to share the celebration of Christ's birth with the young people in your life!

Overall, I highly recommend this very special book, it will be a the perfect gift that your youngsters will be begging you to read to them over and over again. This book truly touched me, and took my breath away with the attention to detail and keeping it true to the real reason for Christmas!

About
The First Christmas Night is a beautiful retelling of the birth of Jesus on that joyous night in Bethlehem so long ago. The poem begins with the arrival of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem and winds though Christ’s birth, the angels’ appearance to the shepherds, and the visit by the Wise Men.  The simple, yet elegant, verses will appeal to little ones and are accompanied by the rich acrylic illustrations of Christine Kornacki.

Twas the very first Christmas when all through the town
not a creature was stirring—there was not a sound.
The moon shining bright in the heavens so high
gave the look of midday to the Bethlehem sky.
The animals were nestled in warm, cozy places
with looks of contentment on each of their faces.

My Review:
Kate and Melanie haven't spoken in 5 years, not since the disastrous day that Kate walked out of her sister's wedding without explanation. And now their parents are separating, it is up to Kate and Melanie to join forces to bring the family together for Christmas!

A sweet heartwarming Christmas movie, very much made for families with its simple but comforting message of family and forgiveness. I don't want to say too much and give away the story!

This was a clean movie the whole way through, there was nothing that I really thought stood out as objectionable at all, so I could definitely say that it is great for families!

For Every Season by Cindy Woodsmall ~ Review

For Every Season (Amish Vines and Orchards, #3)

Lucie's Review:
Rhoda had finally found a place where she fit in, work she loved, a man who made her laugh and a business partner who worked as hard as she did. But because of a single mistake she's lost it all. She can still work, but she cannot speak to Samuel without making her boyfriend jealous, and she will do anything to keep from ruining their unique bond as brothers.

If you've read the last few books in the series, you will know the characters and the situation as the story grows. Rhoda and Jacob are trying to get back what they once had together, and Samuel is working hard to save the orchard and make up for past mistakes. There are also several subplots, one of my favorites being Leah and Landon's story as she wavers between staying or leaving the Amish. A new girl, Iva come to town because of a call from Leah, and she stays to get away from a bad past.

This book is well written and definitely kept be reading at a steady pace, and it takes a realistic look at the problems facing modern Amish communities. Definitely not a stand alone book. This book follows the troubled times that follow a mistake and how it is seldom easy or clear cut to fix when three people are involved.

Into the Whirlwind by Elizabeth Camden ~ Review

    Into the Whirlwind

    My Review:

Mollie Knox has found a purpose in following in her father's footsteps by making famously intricate watches, but when the Great Chicago Fire takes almost everything from her she finds herself relying on the one man she swore she'd never trust.
Zach Kazmarek has made a name for himself as a lawyer to be reckoned with, from a humble home he has worked for everything that her has. Zach has admired Mollie from afar for years and now that he has the opportunity to help her, will he keep her best interests in mind?

A wonderful historical novel set during the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire, as people dusted themselves off and set about the hard task of rebuilding. I loved how this book showed how the best and the worst in people can be brought out through these times, and dealt with parts of the human condition.

I immediately admired Mollie, for her hard working spirit, love and dedication to her friends. This book was filled with so much history and a vast array of characters whose lives were forever changed by the fire, and many who became stronger because of it.

This was a wonderful story with so many characters who endeared themselves to me over the course of the story and they grew.

Overall, another terrific book from Ms. Camden. I could tell that a lot of research went into this book and I felt that it realistically showed what was going on during the aftermath of the fire. Great book!

Thank you to Ms. Camden for providing me with a review copy of this wonderful book, in return for me expressing my honest thoughts and opinions.

An Amish Famiy Christmas by Murray Pura ~ Review

    An Amish Family Christmas
    Lucie's Review:
    Not your typical Amish Romance!
Naomi's husband Micah has joined the army as a medic, and is sent away to Afghanistan. While he is away tragedy strikes killing Naomi's father, mother, and sister, leaving her brother Luke with a severe head injury. Rebecca, Naomi's friend and Micah's sister steps in to help care for Luke and help Naomi cope with everything going on around her.
When Micah comes home things become even more difficult, because of his shunning and though they allow him to stay and work with them, he is not allowed to speak or eat with them, not even with his own wife!
Can their broken relationship be healed?

At first I wasn't sure if I was going to love this book, because it just sounded so incredibly sad, and at first it is. But hopes shines through in a powerful way as hearts, and relationships begin to heal.

The characters were all well written with meaningful dialogue between them, as well as many memorable members of the community. I really liked Micah and how he truly believed in what he did, and stood strong knowing that God had called him to be in Afghanistan for a reason.

This is a terrific read in so many ways and it shows God's providence and sovereignty over everything, and the power of prayer. This was a very engaging read that kept me reading, with the equally riveting subplots that entwined themselves into the story. Overall, another fantastic read from Murray Pura!

Twice Loved by Wanda E. Brunstetter ~ Review

    Twice Loved
    Lucie's Review:
The title of this book comes from the name of a store that sells second hand toys and books. Dan's wife started the store in order to help families during and after the war, but now Dan runs it on his own, after promising his wife that he would keep it running after her death.
Bev lost both her husband and her job, when she sees an add in the paper looking for a bookkeeper/shopkeeper. Dan offers her the job and even lets Bev's daughter Amy hang out at the store.

This is a sweet Christmas novella, filled with loveably heartwarming characters, people who have loved and lost and loved again. A story by best-selling author Wanda Brunstetter full of faith, hope and love.

Beloved by Robin Lee Hatcher ~ Review & Litfuse Tour

    Beloved

    Lucie's Review:

I was drawn into this story from the very beginning.

Diana's supposedly dead husband shows up at her engagement party, with a strange request to have her take him back for 6 months and if it doesn't work out, he will set her free.

The extent of Tyson's reckless, selfish, and hurtful past comes out as the story progresses with flashbacks into Diana and Tyson's past. I really had to keep an eyes out for the time stamps so I didn't get confused, because it goes back and forth frequently.

This book engages quickly, keeping up a steady pace, with plot twists, great side characters, pets, and villains.

Tyson was a fascinating character because he had such a shaded past and how he treated the people around him was despicable, but he showed true repentance and sincerity as well. And Diana was such a strong character to be able to go through was she did.

Gloria Fisher, Diana's adoptive mother was probably one of my favorite characters, because she was quite literally there for Diana, and always supporting her, yet she had the backbone for confrontation.

Themes of faith, redemption and reconciliation are skillfully woven into the story, as well as the sanctity of marriage and the importance of adoption. I think this one is quite possibly the best of the series! Definitely a book that was gripping and touching, and hard to put down!

About the book: Diana is ready to begin a new chapter in her life-until the husband she believed dead reappears at her engagement party.

Diana Brennan came west on the orphan train and was given a home with a loving couple who cherished and spoiled her. At 17, she fell hard for Tyson Applegate, the son of a wealthy mine owner. After a whirlwind courtship and marriage, Tyson took off for adventures around the world, including fighting with the Rough Riders in Cuba. Receiving no word from him in years, Diana's infatuation with her dashing husband died an ugly death, and she is ready to move past the old pain and marry again, just as soon as Tyson is declared legally dead.

But when Tyson returns, claiming to be a changed man, he wants to reunite with his wife and run for the senate. While Diana suspects the election is his real reason for wanting her by his side, she agrees to maintain his home and to campaign with him, but when it is over, win or lose, she wants her freedom.

He agrees with one condition---she must give him a chance to change her mind about him.

The Inspiration Behind Beloved Daughter by Alana Terry (Guest Post) & Giveaway

The Story Behind The Beloved Daughter

I couldn’t tell you exactly why, but I’ve been intrigued by stories of religious persecution since I was a teenager. I won’t argue with you if you come back and tell me that it’s morbid, but I’m encouraged by accounts of people who remain faithful in the face of intense opposition.

I think for a while in my teen and young adult years, I had some kind of martyr complex. I imagined moving to another country and helping victims of religious violence find hope and courage. I pictured myself risking health, comfort, imprisonment, maybe even my own life, to
help bring comfort and hope to others.

Then I became a mother. As soon as I felt that little child swimming around in my womb, I began to have second thoughts about my grand life “goals.” Maternal instinct battled compassionate zeal. Sure I wanted to help save the world. But only if I could keep my child safe!

For a while I felt guilty about my shift in mindset. And a little scared too. For years, I had
assumed that I could withstand just about whatever opposition came my way. I’d be like those
heroes in the persecution stories I liked to read. Nothing would make me waver in my faith.
    Unless my child was threatened…

What would I do if someone held my child hostage? Wouldn’t I do whatever I could to
protect them, no matter what “sacrifices” of faith that entailed? I read stories of parents who had
The Beloved Daughterto choose between their religion and their children’s safety. I had nightmares. What could a
mother do faced with that kind of a dilemma?

The nightmares kept coming, until one day I decided my subconscious was telling me
something. I needed to explore these issues more. I needed to figure out what happens in a
parent’s soul when their child is put in danger by their own religious beliefs. I was familiar with
instances of religious persecution in North Korea already, probably because the stories there are
especially brutal, and so I decided to write a novel set in North Korea that explores the
relationship between parental protection and religious fidelity and describes what happens when
those two forces can no longer co-exist.

The Beloved Daughter has won awards from the Women of Faith writing contest and the
Book Club Network. It also reached #5 in Christian suspense in the kindle store. You can enjoy
The Beloved Daughter in a variety of formats, including paperback, ebook, or audiobook

An Untamed Heart by Lauraine Snelling ~ Review

    An Untamed Heart

    Lucie's Review:

The lovely prequel to the best-selling Red River of the North Series follows 21 year old Ingeborg Strand is convinced that she will be a spinster, until she meets a rich student from Oslo
who may just change her mind. But just as everything starts to fall into place, everything falls apart again.
Then Roland Bjorklund and his young son come in her life, Roland is hardworking and honest, but can she love him?

Set in the beautiful mountains of Norway, I was swept away by the attention to detail and lush descriptions of the scenery. I was most fascinated by the descriptions of life in Norway during that time period and what it was like to have grow up there, and how vastly different it is from Norway today.

There were times this book was hard to read, because pretty much every that could go wrong for poor Ingeborg, did. Though she was a kind, spirit and it was interesting to see Ingeborg and Roland and how they met.

The trouble with prequels is that you do know more of what is going to happen and how it is going to end up, so I really can't been too surprised that the plot was a bit predictable. Yet I did enjoy this book much more than I had anticipated, it's hard not to love a book set in such a lovely country.

Overall, a lovely sequel to Ms. Snelling's best-selling series!

King's Faith Movie Review and Giveaway!!!!

    My Review:
Brendan King has lived a hard life, running with a rough crowd, being bounced from foster home to foster home. But he found a faith that turned his life around while spending time in the juvenile penitentiary.
Fresh out of prison he finds hope and security in a new foster home and friends that share his beliefs, but his ties to the past threaten to drag him down, especially when it begins to threaten the lives of those he loves.

King's Faith is a fantastic film, with a compelling plot, and many talented actors. I've seen a lot of Christian films, and sadly I couldn't always in good faith recommend them, but King's Faith is completely different. It has a strong message of faith that strikes a perfect balance in that it isn't overly preachy, yet it wasn't flimsy in its message in a Hallmark card kinda way like other films have been. King's Faith conveyed a strong message of faith, that fit perfectly into the setting and plot.

This movie is honestly the best Christian movie I have seen in a long time, the storytelling was inspiring, compelling, and powerful, this is a movie that I could rewatch multiple times because it was just so well done from the story, and filming, to the fantastic actors.

The reason that this movie is rated PG-13 is because of three scenes of violence. The opening scene shows a blurry flashback of Brendan's old life and how he watched a friend die in his own blood. And two scenes where a gun is waved around a in a forcefully threatening manner. There wasn't any swearing or innuendoes, or sex. But because of the violent scenes parents should let their kids watch this only with discretion, because it may not be good for younger children.

Overall though, I give this movie a full 5 stars, and would heartily recommend it to anyone who will listen! This movie well so well done, and I was engaged from the very start of it. Absolutely excellent!

Christmas Cover Up by Lynette Eason ~ Review

    Christmas Cover-Up

    Astor's Review:

Filled with non stop action, I literally finished this book in record time! I loved everything about this book.

14 years ago Detective Katie Randall's younger sister was kidnapped while Katie stepped out for mere moments that she had regretted ever since. Now she is determined to solve her sister's case, but her only option is to team up with FBI agent Jordan Grey, who's family hates her.

A riveting suspense from the very beginning, I have long been a fan of Lynette Eason so I was very happy to see that she had a new book out. And though this book was a little shorter than her other books, I think that it just made the pace faster and even more engaging.

The characters were strong and both Jordan and Katie were excellent together, the tension between them was amazing.

Overall, a terrifically riveting read, I would definitely recommend it!

Fifteen Minutes by Karen Kingsbury ~ Review

    Fifteen Minutes
    Lucie's Review:

Zack Dylan joins the cast of Fifteen Minutes, as a way to save the farm, but overnight he becomes a country music singing sensation and one of the top contenders of the reality show. But as Zack progresses on the show, how much will he sacrifice his values?

Zack is given a once in a lifetime chance, yet along the way he is tested and tempted and asked to compromise his values and tone down his faith. It was hard to read about him making such bad decisions and there were moments when I honestly just wanted to shake him. There were also some side stories about the judges of the show, both who had fame and how it adversely affected both of them.

I really liked Reese and how she always tried to think the best of Zack, even when things didn't look good.

This was a quick read that I zoomed through, because everything seemed to be falling apart and I just wanted everything to get better--fast!

Overall this wasn't my favorite Karen Kingsbury book, but it had some intriguing stories. And shows the downside of fame.

What Once was Lost by Kim Vogel Sawyer ~ Review

What Once Was Lost: A Novel Lucie's Review:

After the death of her father, Christina is left to run the poorhouse, whose residents are like family to her, and in a way she insulates herself by surrounding herself with those she loves.
Levi, on the other hand is isolated, he keeps to himself and away from the hypocritical townspeople.
When the poorhouse kitchen catches fire, Christina is forced to find a home for each of the former residents and give them a chance to find their own way.

This was a different kind of book from Ms. Sawyer because it wasn't so much about the romance, but about the characters and how so many of them made great strides in their lives to change their life or the life of others. There was a full cast of fantastic characters, my favorites were the couple that owned the general store and how truly kind and loyal they were in standing up for their friends. I also really liked Cora and how she matured and grew spiritually throughout the story. Tommy was also a great character.

Over the course of the book, Christina struggles to balance all of the many responsibilities on her plate, and also she grows in her relationship and understanding of God.

Levi, was great, he was very smart, and in so many ways the exact opposite of Christina, and instead of holding people too close, he pushed them away. It was easy to see why he chose to live the way that he had for the last few years.

There were parts of the story that were slower and hard to read, but by the end it was all worth it. Everything came together, all the little story threads came together into a big beautiful picture.

Overall, this was a very good book, and very different, but I liked that, and by the time I finished the book I was really glad that I had read it.

Critical Pursuit by Janice Cantore ~ review

    Critical Pursuit
    Astor's Review:

Brinna Caruso was kidnapped as a child and left for dead in the middle of the desert, now she and her rescue dog, Hero are the number one team on the force to be called in kidnapping cases.
Detective Jack O'Reilly is ready to go back to job after the death of his wife in a car accident caused by a drunk driver, now he is bent on revenge and bringing his wife's killer to justice.
Together Brinna and Jack make a fearsome team, but will the scars from their past prevent them from moving on and looking to a brighter future?

An action filled book, the first of a brand new series by Janice Cantore. Critical  Pursuit  is very different from the other Christian Suspense books on the market, mainly because it isn't a romance. It is all about the story, and the characters who are still coming to terms with their pasts.

Jack and Brinna, though at first they seem very different, are more similar that they know, both of them struggle to understand how a loving God let such horrible atrocities happen to them.

This book was full of action and adventure, but also had a surprising emotional and spiritual depth to it that I wasn't quite expecting, but was pleasantly surprised. The chapters were short, but made the book fast paced and nearly impossible to put down!

Overall, a very good beginning to what is sure to be a fantastic series. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Noah writes a letter to his aunt and uncle as a joke, telling them to send a wagon load of women west, his aunt is naturally mortified, but his uncle takes him seriously. His first recruit is Evie, their former housemaid.
Evie is shocked by the idea, but when she realizes that she doesn't love her fiancé and that he doesn't love her in return, she decides to take a chance on a fresh start.
When Evie and the other women arrive, Noah is dumbfounded, he never expected his uncle to take him seriously, and now the lumber camp is swarming with women!

I was fascinated by the fact that this novel is the fictitious account of a real life event, and there was a lot of history incorporated into the story. The setting is realistic and truly gives a sense of what it must have been like to have been among the first settlers in a new area.

My favorite historical character was Chief Seattle, the authors did a great job of portraying his as a wise, at times humorous, man of faith.

This books has a full cast of characters many of whom are at differing stages of their relationships. It was fun getting to know them all. Noah's Uncle Miles was a huge part of the story and was something of a big dreamer and schemer.

Overall, this was an interesting read based on historical facts and events, I loved how the people of Seattle had a vision for their town to be a place free of liquor and other vices. Thought the pace was a bit slow at times I appreciated the research that went into it, to tell this tale of the birth of Seattle.
