Seeing Jesus from the East by Ravi Zacharias and Abdu Murray ~ Review

My Review:

I started reading this before the passing of the beloved author and evangelist, Ravi Zacharias, and how fitting that it is one of his most personal and my favorite.

Originally planned to be co-written with the late Nabeel Qureshi, in this book Mr. Zacharias enlists the perspective of fellow author Abdu Murray as they share personal testimonies, and illustrate the difference that understanding the Gospel from within the original Eastern context giving greater understanding and context to the Gospel. I loved how Zacharias and Murray show the transcendent power of the Gospel that speaks to both Eastern and Western hearts, in our search for significance and meaning.

This book builds a fantastic case for reading the Scriptures in the context of an Eastern honor/shame culture, as this was the audience to which Jesus preached. This book uncovers many passages with an added depth when viewed through an Eastern lense that I will never view in the same way again.

I can't recommend this book enough, it does a great way of compellingly revealing the significance of an Eastern interpretation, as well as how Jesus's teachings that were radical to the Eastern ear were foundations of our Western culture. Well balanced and accessible, this book is an excellent read, bringing out the nuances of the culture our faith is rooted in. One of the stand out reads from this year, highly recommend!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

** EDIT: February 15th, 2021 -- I am am completely disgusted by the actions of Ravi Zacharias in his systemic sexual abuse, grooming of victims, and gross misuse of ministry funds to feed his sin and hurt others. I can no longer recommend this book. The full report of the years of disgusting and horrendous behavior is available on the RZIM website.
