My Review:

A beautiful prayer for a child, from newborn and up, with charming illustrations and written in lovely prose. 

The book comes in two versions that are identical except for the artwork, color schemes and pronouns used to differentiate between the version for girls or the version for boys. It makes for a thoughtful and heartfelt baby gift, that is sure to become a favorite nighttime prayer for your child. The words are simple, but profound. Showing a strong desire for the child to grow to know and follow God. 

Overall, a lovely book that makes a thoughtful gift for a new baby in your life or for someone you know, with words that will stick with them a lifetime.

About the Author

Donna Wyland is an award-winning author, editor, and coach. Her picture book, Psalms in Rhyme for Little Hearts, won the 2024 Christian Indie Award, and ‘Twas the Night Before Jesus won the 2025 Illumination Book Award. Both Psalms in Rhyme for Little Hearts and ‘Twas the Night Before Jesus were Readers’ Choice Award Finalists. David's Diary: The Science Fair Sabotage by Bunmi Laditan, illustrated by Elisa Rocchi // Review

My Review: 

A fun-filled follow up to David's summer camp shenanigans, David and his friend Nate are back in school and competing in their school's science fair. 

But a threat to their school's entry in the science fair has them joining forces with an unlikely ally and learning about the fruits of the spirit. Humorous and fast paced, I like that David has good intentions to help others, even if things don't always go as planned. A fun upbeat read, with comic style illustrations that fit the story well. It is a great Christian alternative to similar middle grade reads that are snarky and do not encourage good character. 

Humorous and well written. David is suspicious of others and learns to give them a chance. I liked how he and Nate worked with Abby, and got to know her better over the course of their adventure. 

Overall, fun-filled read, with plenty of humor and lessons about making friends and the fruit of the spirit. Definitely a fun one!

Beyond the Far Horizon by Carolyn Leiloglou, illustrated by Vivienne To // Review

My Review: 

The thrilling third installment in The Restorationists. 

Ravi has joined forces with Georgia, Vincent, and their family to fight the Distortionists, but a small part of him is still doubting that he can turn his back  on his former life and truly be accepted as he is by his new friends. Fighting Dorian and his Distortionists will take everything they have, as they work together to protect the painting and reunite families. 

A satisfying conclusion to a wonderful series, great for middle-grade readers, with themes of celebrating unique gifts, forgiveness, truth, and turning a new leaf. I loved getting to know all the new characters, like Selma and Horace. As well as the friendship between Ravi and Lily. 

Fast paced and fun, with educational tidbits about famous art. I liked getting to know Ms. Art better, as well as Uncle Leo ad seeing the whole team work together. Great for confident young readers, or as a family read aloud. Highly enjoyable and engaging. Definitely recommend!

Parable Port: The Captain's Clue by Brock Eastman and Shaun Stevenson // Review

My Review: 

Return to Parable Port in this second adventure that finds Anthony, Duck, Grace, J.R. And Brooklyn once again fighting to save the town from mysterious goings on that can only be fought with truth, and solid foundations.

Another thrilling adventure, as the kids learn about the Wise Builder and the Foolish Builder, while their town finds itself flooding . The kids must seek the answers and cling to the truth to bring the water under control, while the evil one is at work trying to deceive them. I liked how we get to see another side of J.R. on her own quest for truth.

 There is a lot going on, and I had a hard time putting it down.

A fantastic story for middle grade readers, that teaches about the parables of Jesus through fast-paced truth-filled adventures! Strong values, exciting adventures, great for confident readers or as a family read-aloud. Definitely recommend!

Rosie's Cowboy Christmas: Saving the Holidays Together by Paige Murray, illustrated by Kristen Humphrey // Review

My Review: 

A heartwarming story of friendship and family at Christmastime in Texas.

Oakley and Rosie are excited for all the fun things they will do at Christmas, until anowstorm comes and takes the power with it. Rosie helps Oakley make the most out of a change of plans.

Heartwarming and cute, I loved the ranch setting and the charming and cozy illustrations. Simple and heartwarming. I loved how Rosie worked to cheer Oakley up and make her Christmas one to remember.

My Review: Colorful, fun and informational, The Explorer Bible Dictionary is a great study tool for curious kids, complete with all sorts of helpful information from pictures, pronunciation guides, to the point biographies, all with Scripture references that point you back to the Bible. 

Targeted at elementary aged children, but can be enjoyed by all ages. It is arranged in alphbetical order, with full-color pages. Great for families, Sunday School and more,  put together in a way that makes study material fun and accessible. My favorite part was how every definition has a Scripture reference, and often more than one. 

A great tool to help pique the interest of kids, and help them understand words, people, places, and things in the Bible, for a richer understanding, with ways to enrich and start conversations on Scripture. This Bible dictionary makes for a great resource and gift, for the kids in your life. Well organized and executed in a way that helps make learning fun. It also handles tough topics well, and defines "adultry," "sex," and "virgin," in appropriate ways with a Biblical worldview, but parents may want to review these sections first. Excellent resource, with good Bible based definitions!

My Review of The Blobs: Attack of the Glitchies: 

Picking up right where the previous book left off, Cadetski and his friends are making the most of their new home. They tried to warn the Blob Force about the doomsicles, to no advail. Now King Neptune is coming to reclaim the doomsicles. 

A fun follow up, filled with humor and a high stakes plot. The same characters return, in this hilarious adventure as they are challenged to fight evil power with sacrifice. I liked how Chubs, has a heart for others, and it was fun seeing him take to his new home and make new friends. 

The illustrations bring the story to life, great for ages 8-12 who are starting to be confident readers. Full of imaginative fun, and clean humor. I liked how the Blobs learn to stand up to evil. 

Overall, a fun continuation of the Blobs, with character growth and fun twists along the way. Engaging and fun, with clean humor, in a imginative new world. Highly enjoyable!

My Review of The Blobs: Crash Landing: 

Upon notice that they must immediately evacuate their home planet, the Blobs are sent in pods to their new home, along the way this ragtag crew crash lands on a strange planet and stirs up more trouble than they bargained for. 

Blob Force wannabe Cadetski leads his unlikely crew through unknown dangers and learns a lesson about telling the truth. Filled with fitting cartoon style illustrations, this book is written for confident young readers. It has a larger easy to read font, but a creative and inventive vocabulary that could trip up children new to chapter books. Great for kids who have graduated from beginner chapter books and are looking for something between that and the next step. 

Clean fun humor, and a hilarious, unlikely team of characters. Together they learn to work together, facing fears and finding 1friendship. One of my favorite characters is Chubs and his adorable and helpful plant robot. 

A fast-paced adventure, full of unexpected twists and kid-friendly humor. Imaginative clean fun, I'm excited to see where the series goes!

 My Review:  Papa Joe and Lucy discover how God is true to his promises, as they read about Noah and the flood. 

Colorfully illustrated in bright vibrant colors that draw the eye, fitting the style of the book well. I loved the beautiful illustrations, and solid truths that they learned about through Noah. A very well done and age appropriate book for young readers, I liked the frequent use of Scripture, as well as the lovely pictures sure to captivate young minds. It even has a set of discussion questions in the back that you can go over with your child. 

Overall, a wonderful addition to the Questions for Kids Series. I'm excited to see what Papa Joe teaches Lucy about the Bible next. A wonderful series to share with children, great to read aloud and open conversations on deeper topics!

Are you a dog-lover? I sure am. Have been since I was a child, often referring to my 110-pound silver-tipped German Shepherd as my ‘best friend’ in elementary school. I consider dogs the finest companions and treat our own like they are family. Because they are! Well, I am pleased to introduce a new character in the third book in the Questions for Kids series, and she is a special one. Meet Rosie, the spirited Golden Retriever puppy hiding under the covers with Lucy, scared of the summer thunderstorm rumbling outside. It made sense to bring Rosie into the series with this book, because animals are an important part of this story. Rosie is extra special because she’s modeled after my youngest daughter’s dog, who I helped care for in her first of year of life. Here she is!

David's Diary: The Summer Camp Disaster by Bunmi Laditan // Review

My Review: 

David is off to church camp for the first time with his best friend Nate, in his diary and emails home he documents his days as he tries to stay out of trouble and learns to think of others besides himself.

 From the start you get the inkling that David might be a few notches above your average troublemaker, but you can't help but love him as he finds his way. I liked how we see non-neurotypical characters presented, with themes of trying new things, facing fears, and forgiveness. Nate is a good friend, and I liked how David is sensitive to his needs. The story is fast-paced, with fun accompanying illustrations. Great for those who are gaining reading confidence with chapter books. A fun new series for older elementary readers, full of fun and silly shennanigans!

The Big Fish: The Mystery of the Ancient Map by M.J. Thomas // Review

 

My Review: 

The second installment of the spin off series to the Secret of the Hidden Scrolls, finds Mary, Peter, Uncle Solomon, and Hank one step closer to rescuing the remaining hidden scrolls from the evil collector. 

Fun and fast paced chapter book, targeted at elementary ages children, gaining confidence with reading. In this adventure they travel back in time to the prophet Jonah's time, where they travel alongside him into the stomach of the big fish. They learn important lessons of faith, and how God hears when we pray. 

A wonderful faith-based series full of adventure, with a continuing storyline throughout the series of evading the Collector. Great fun, with solid core of faith.

The Brave Queen: The Mystery of the Ancient Map by M.J. Thomas // Review

My Review: 

Mary, Peter and Hank are back in a brand new series, exploring Israel with their uncle Solomon, discovering more secret scrolls!

A fast paced adventure that takes them to the courts of Queen Esther, on a mission to solve the secret of the scroll before time runs out, while avoiding the evil Collector. 

A fun read that sets up well for the books to come. Easy to read  chapter book, great for children who are gaining confidence in reading, with a good ratio of illustrations along with large easy to read print, that is well spaced, and good straightforward sentence structure. 

A wonderful adventure for elementary ages children, with themes of trusting God's plans. A terrific spin off series, with the same original characters!

Peter Martyr Vermigli: Christian Biographies for Young Readers by Simonetta Carr // Review

My Review: 

Well written biography that tells the story of Peter Martyr Vermigli's life in a style that is friendly to young readers, with larger font and lovely illustrations. 

The biography follows Peter Martyr Vermigli from his young years to his later life, his scholarly hunger for learning more of God's word, rise in the Roman Catholic Church, and eventual conversion to Protestantism, fleeing for his life and encouraging like-minded Christians. I had never heard of him before, and I thought it was cool how he had been a contemporary of Martin Luther, and an influential part of the reformation in England. 

A wonderful addition to your library, hardcover bound with durable glossy full color pages, lovely illustrations and a message of faith and how God used Martyr to spread the Reformation. Great for all ages, especially older elementary 7-12, but fantastic to read even as an adult.

John Newton : Christian Biographies for Young Readers by Simonetta Carr // Review

My Review: 

Well written biography that tells the story of John Newton's life in a style that is friendly to young readers, with larger font and lovely illustrations. 

The biography follows John Newton from his young years to his later life, showing the years when he was running from God, yet God kept calling him back. It was so cool to see the hand of God through John's life, and how he became a man of deep faith after his years of irresponsible actions as a young man. The book includes a timeline of his life, some fun snippets of information and 2 letters from him to his niece Betsy. 

A wonderful addition to your library, hardcover bound with durable glossy full color pages, lovely illustrations and a message of faith and God's amazing grace. Great for all ages, especially older elementary 7-12, but fantastic to read even as an adult.

On a Midnight Clear by Tracie Peterson, Misty M. Beller, Karen Witemeyer

Review:

The Shepherd's Heart by Tracie Peterson
Angel accepts a marriage of convenience with a widowed Wyoming sheep rancher, with two small children. She comes to care for the children quickly, teaching them at home, and quietly winning them over. A heartwarming slow burn romance, with endearing characters, and a heroine that you can't help but love! A heartfelt western read, with great characters, and a satisfying ending.

No Room at the Inn by Misty M. Beller
Hope and her brother run an inn along the stagecoach route, when a snowstorm rolls in Noah and his charge find themselves snowbound. Can Hope and Noah solve the mystery of the missing heirloom and perhaps take a chance on love? A sweet western romance that takes place over the course of a snowstorm, bringing two hearts together in an unlikely way. Hope is a capable young woman, and she and Noah make a great team. Enjoyable read.

A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer
Stella Barrington and Frank Stenz strike up a written correspondence at the encouragement of her father, and as the conversation turns to romance they both wonder if they will be found lacking in the other's eyes when they finally meet in person. Such a sweet heartwarming romance that gave me all warm fuzzies, and had me grinning ear to ear. I loved how their faith was very important to both Stella and Frank. We also get to know Frank's colleagues who are also very academic, and going through struggles of their own. A fun story that has clever humor, and a full cast of characters. My heart instantly went out to Stella, who sees herself as not conventionally beautiful. I love how they both see the best in each other. Such an adorable and satisfying Christmas novella!

 My Review: 

A heartwarming and encouraging story about a little girl who imagines what it would be like to bring Jesus to school with her. 

This charming story is told in verse and rhyme with sing-song rhythm to it, and its cool to see the little girl's child-like faith accepting and showing how she sees Jesus as her friend, and knows that He wouldn't stand for injustice and sees the pain of others. It is a sweet, but stirring story and shows how even young kids can understand who Jesus is and how we can show Him to others. Heartwarming and inspiring, yet ringing with truth. A great conversation starter and reminder for the young person in your life that God is with them wherever they go, and Jesus doesn't have to physically go with them to school everyday to be there. Adorable accompanying illustrations as well.

April Graney is a teacher at Cookson Hills, a children’s home and school for at-risk students in Oklahoma. She is the author of The Marvelous Maker: A Creation and Redemption Parable and the ECPA Christian Book Award finalist The Marvelous Mud House: A Story of Finding Fullness and Joy. A graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary, April loves studying and teaching the Bible. Her greatest joy has been raising five children with her husband Tom in their crazy, loud, happy house at New Life Ranch, a summer camp and retreat center where they have served for over twenty years.

When my husband, Tom, was in high school, a classmate leaned over and casually asked, “Hey, would you like to go to church with me sometime?” Tom wasn’t opposed to church. He’d just never been invited before. This invitation got him to a place where he began hearing the gospel. Finally, at a youth rally, my future husband tearfully repented of his sins and trusted in Jesus’ death on the cross for his salvation. He walked down to the center of that arena, with hundreds of others who had done the same. I’m incredibly thankful for his classmate who had the courage at school to ask his friend to come to church, something which changed the entire trajectory of his life.

Our nation’s schools are filled with kids who need to hear the gospel. After encountering the woman at the well, Jesus told his disciples in John 4:35, “I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.” I believe this could be said of our schools today. There are nearly 60 million school age children in the United States. The Barna Group reports that nearly half of all public educators are practicing Christians, and 86 percent of Christian families send their children to public school. Christians are in public schools. I hope to support and equip them, by providing tools for them to teach their children about Jesus, the gospel, and his love. I hope to help families to see the fertile soil of our nation’s schools, and be faithful to shine the light and love of Jesus in our schools. They are ripe for harvest.

When school children encounter the love of Jesus, they become places where kindness, love and respect can flourish. With the divisiveness in our nation, it’s so important to teach our children how to treat each other with kindness, inclusion and understanding. We can teach our children that everyone is created and cherished by God. We can help reduce bullying in schools when children celebrate their differences and stand up for each other. Our schools would be places of impact for the individual and the school community. These are the truths that I hoped to communicate in If Jesus Came to My School, and I hope that readers will take these lessons to heart and make a difference in the world!

 My Review: 

A heartwarming chapter book, great for early readers who are just getting into chapter books. 

Mary is a young girl excited to learn, with a heart for others. When she shows interest in learning about how children in other countries live and worship God, her parents decide to bring her with on a mission trip to Kenya. In Kenya, Mary learns about the culture and makes new friends, as well as seeing the faith of her friends in action. 

This is an enjoyable story that can be read to a child, or is great for a young reader who is into chapter books. Mary is a sweet and sensitive child, I liked that she was willing to learn, and be thankful for the blessings that she had in her life. I also liked that her parents were supportive and nurturing of her positive interest in missions. A delightful read, with strong themes of faith and friendship, I liked how they were also respectful to those around them from another culture.

In Kenya, Ugali is used as a fork to pick up their food. Ugali Recipe to try with your children:

Ingredients:

1 cup maize meal / corn meal

2 cups normal water

Instructions:

Heat water over medium heat in a deep pan. Make sure you use a pan with a handle.

Add the maize meal or cornmeal and keep on stirring with a strong wooden spoon.

Keep stirring and pressing the mixture against the sides of the pan to break up the lumps.

As the mixture becomes thicker, it becomes more difficult to mix but keep mixing and breaking up the lumps.

The mixture with begin to come away from the sides of the pan.

Allow it to cook for 2-3 minutes.

At this point transfer the ugali to a platter. Place the plate over the pan and turn it upside down.

Or you can transfer to a small heatproof bowl. Pat it down into shape. Place a plate over the bowl and turn it over.

Enjoy piping hot ugali with your favorite stew or curry.
