Mistletoe Season : Three Christmas Stories by Sheila Roberts, Kathleen Fuller, and Pepper Basham // Review

Lucie's Review:

Return to Mistletoe by Kathleen Fuller
Emmy never married, but she raised an adopted daughter all on her own. Now her daughter is grown, and a chance encounter with a familiar face, has her wondering if love didn't pass her by after all.

A touching tale with a sweet, sweep you off your feet romance. I found it even more enjoyable because Emmy is a woman who has never been in love, and placed raising her daughter before everything else, thinking love had passed her by. Kieran is a thoughtful man, and I liked how Emmy's daughter encourages her to take a leap of faith. Well done read!

The Mistletoe Prince by Pepper Basham
Prince Arran St. Clare is serving his penance for his wild ways, working with Luke Edgewood in North Carolina, and helping them pull together the Christmas fundraiser. While there he meets Charlotte, Luke's cousin and coworker at his contractor business, a brilliant young woman who doesn't see how wonderful she is.

A heartwarming Christmas fairy tale set in small town North Carolina, I liked the interaction between Charlotte and Arran, as well as their shared foundation of faith. A charming romance, with witty banter, redemption arc, and a heartfelt love story. A wonderful bonus to the beloved Skymar series from Pepper Basham.

Say No to Mistletoe by Sheila Roberts
Romance writer Hailey Fairchild has never had good luck with mistletoe kisses, and each one has lead to disaster. Back home for Christmas she is doing her best to avoid her first mistletoe disaster, Carwyn Davies, high school jock, now a high school principle.

A heartwarming and hilarious, first person POV rom-com, with a plucky heroine, and a dashing hero there when she needs him most. Great chemistry, and a cast of colorful characters.

Overall, a wonderful collection of heartwarming romances, sure to put you in the mood for the holiday season!

Lucie's Review: Return to Hope's Crossing with this heartwarming second chance holiday romance.

Tori Stallings and her son, Aiden, find themselves living with her late husband's family after losing their home in a fire. But the close proximity brings up new feelings between old friends, as she and her late husband's brother, Micah, navigate their growing attraction. Tori is a wonderful teacher and mother, she is devoted to her son, and wants the best for him. I liked the solid friendship between Micah and Tori, and how he was there for her and her son so many time throughout the years.

Tori has been through a lot in the last few years, and the hard times have been hard on her faith. I liked how the book has a strong message of trusting one stronger than yourself in times of trial. Micah is great with Aiden, and I liked how he is quick to lend a hand when he can.

A heart touching read, with great relationship building, strong family bonds, faith, and hope in the midst of loss. Definitely recommend!

Miss Delia Lyndon, a young woman born into the prestigious Spencer-Lyndon family, is initially enamored with Thaddeus, the son of a prominent local stable owner, when he begins vying for her hand in marriage. She is keenly aware of how a union between the two families would seal their status as one of the most beloved couples from Lexington. However, when Jake, a handsome and charming newcomer, arrives on the scene, he catches her attention, casting doubts and fears in Delia’s heart. Torn between two suitors, Delia must navigate societal expectations, family pressure, and her own desires. Despite his humble beginnings as a farmer, he refuses to be intimidated by his rival’s malicious attempts to sabotage his chances, both on the racetrack and in winning Delia’s affections.  Lucie's Review:

Expected to marry into money, Delia can't help but be drawn to the newcomer from humble beginnings.

Brought up in horseracing royalty, Delia Lyndon is expected to marry the obvious choice. She is a talented young woman, and I liked how she does a great job with Jake's young charges. Jake is a relative newcomer to the world of horse racing, and now guardian to his young nieces. I admired his devotion to family, and commitment to integrity. Delia and Jake make a great team, and I liked how well they work together to solve the mystery and spend time with the children.

An engaging and well written read, with great characters, and great plot. I liked the elements of mystery, faith, and romance, along with adorable children! A well rounded novel, well worth reading!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

More from Lisa

Hello Celebrate Lit Friends and Readers! I’m back to share a looksie at Book 2 from Kentucky Debutantes of the Gilded Age. I’ve really enjoyed my deep dive into all things Kentucky Derby and the world of horseracing in To Choose the Longshot.

Most of us have heard of Churchill Downs and Lexington’s Keeneland. But before Keeneland was the Lexington Association Racetrack. The annual spring race generally opened each year on that course with a featured race known as the Phoenix Stakes. It dates as far back in history as 1831! You can take a peek at the fascinating horse names of all the winners from 1831 to 2012, here. Of course, I’ve fictionalized names of winners and many events around the races in my series, but it’s fun to peek at real-life history when crafting our stories.

Leading up to and through the Gilded Age, the time period and setting of this series, the Phoenix race was generally sponsored by the Phoenix Hotel in Lexington. And more than Kentucky horseracing history, in Book 2, readers will get to come along for a glimpse at another course located in Baltimore, Maryland when the story takes our main characters to Pimlico. They referred to this track as the Old Hilltop in the early days of American horseracing history.

And atop Pimlico sits the famed weathervane. Did you know that painting the Preakness Stakes weathervane is a grand Pimlico tradition dating to 1909? The vane style is unique, commissioned by the Maryland Jockey Club, bearing the shape of a thoroughbred and jockey ever since the original arrow-shaped one was struck down by lightning. The new vane was christened by the colors of the silks carried by that year’s winner, Effendi.

I had a great deal of fun writing To Choose the Longshot starting with the very first page. The novel opens with a runaway bride! It’s always a wonder what makes a bride runaway, and my imagination went to work at once creating the situation that causes this bride so much consternation.

Readers get to learn more about Veronica’s sister in Book 2, Miss Delaney Lyndon. Everyone calls the shy and demure middle sister, Delia. And all of Lexington expects one of the Lyndon sisters to marry into the Sullivan family, since these two families are “Kentucky horseracing royalty.” But who will Delia choose to marry? Will she marry her handsome, wealthy, and daring beau, Thaddeus Sullivan, or will a rugged newcomer and underdog in their midst from the Adirondacks, Jake Williams, turn her head?

I cannot fail to mention that the beloved character of Aunt Mae from Book 1 makes an appearance in Book 2. She certainly has her hands full attempting to help Delia reach a decision about who she should marry, knowing it will impact the future of Velvet Brooks Farm for generations to come. But if anyone can help steer Delia to a decision, it’s Aunt Mae. As our heroine grapples with perceptions and tries to balance expectations with what’s in her heart, find out what happens next with a deeper look at the world of horseracing, sure to give horse enthusiasts plenty to cheer about.

Happy reading!

Blessings!

Lisa

Cloverton Charade by Sarah Ladd // Review

Lucie's Review:
Approached by Cloverton's former mistress to evaluate a private collection, Alicia Brannon finds herself out of her depth at a weeks long house party when she catches the eye of Lucas Avery a antiquities purveyor, and together they must unravel the strange goings on at Cloverton.

A little confusing in the beginning with all the social and family connections to straighten out, but it quickly pulled me in with the intriguing plot and likable main characters. I especially appreciated the middle working class main characters in a regency setting, which is isn't super common in the genre. Likeable protagonists, and an engaging plot, with plenty going on.

Overall, an enjoyable read, with great characters, making for a good clean romance.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

 Lucie's Review:

Picking up where the previous book left off, this book follows many familiar faces, as Ginny fights for her freedom from her conniving husband, and Maeve finds that the future might mean facing the past.

A fast paced adventure, with plenty going on, strong friendships, action, humor, and romance. This book really ties the whole series together, and you are best off reading the books in order to fully appreciate the conclusion, though the first two are more standalone. I liked how this series features strong and resilient women, fighting against the odds for justice, love and a future. I really enjoyed the full cast of characters and how this novel balanced the action and humor with the tension of the legal battle.

Overall, this was a great read, and I liked the second chance romance, as well as the strong themes of fighting for justice, forgiveness, and clinging to hope. It was great to catch up with the couples from the previous books, as well as delve deeper into the lives of Maeve and Ginny. An excellent conclusion to a great series!

Mary lives on a ranch in eastern Nebraska with her very own romantic cowboy hero.

More from Mary

Into the Sunset is the third book in A Western Light series, and I always love the wrap up of a series. In this book I’ve got a deliciously evil villain, and I’ve worked that villain in and out of the characters lives at the end of each of the first two books, but he keeps coming back. This time, he really gets what’s coming to him. Anyway, it’s not a shocking thing to say: the bad guy loses. I’ll bet most readers of my work knew that was coming. It’s the HOW that makes it fun.

My heroine is one I really enjoyed: Maeve O’Toole—a red-headed, sassy Irish lass with a mild brogue. And my hero, Dakota Harlan, has interested her from the first moment she laid eyes on him. Except that moment was several years ago, and she blamed him for her father’s death on the wagon train Dakota was leading. Then life separated them as he went on to Oregon and her family turned aside to homestead in Idaho. Now Dakota is back in Maeve’s life again. She’s had a chance to see that her anger with Dakota was unfair and has discovered that Dakota has always admired her. He’d probably scoop her up and marry her, if it wasn’t for the men trying to kill him. He doesn’t have much room for a wife in the life he’s living now.

In this story, I bring back all the characters from the earlier two books. The villain who’s been harassing them all along reappears, and the men hunting Dakota show up, too. Ginny must go to court to break the hold her evil husband has over her, declaring her insane and locking her away. She’s been hiding ever since. But now she’s ready to face him in court, but a conniving, wealthy man like her husband never plays fair.

Into the Sunset is packed with love and action, adventure and danger. All play out against the hectic railroad town of Cheyenne, Wyoming a few years after Wyoming becomes the first state to give women the right to vote. And there are some tough, smart women ready to stand between Ginny and a cruel husband. And plenty of tough smart cowboys, too. I hope you love this story!

Over the Edge by Irene Hannon // Review

Lucie's Review:

A gripping psychological thriller, that kept me guessing every step of the way as Lindsey fights for her life and sanity against someone who has her in their sights.

After inadvertently witnessing the aftermath of a crime, Lindsey's life is turned upside down as she is hunted on seemingly every side as her word is being questioned. Jack Tucker initially doesn't know what to make of Lindsey, but after getting to know her, he sees that she is being set up. Together they must find the truth, and bring the true killer to justice.

A fast paced read, with well developed characters and great interaction, I liked getting to know the full cast of characters, strong faith, and suspenseful storytelling. Lindsey is a wonderful  protagonist, pushing forward and fighting back when the deck is stacked against her. Well worth the read!

Lucie's Review:

Derin Vargas is a reformed bad boy, and the head of the Vargas Family's foray into sports medicine, he's opinionated, headstrong, and determined to make the sports rehab a success. Madison Moore is a pro-tennis player, hoping to heal and come back strong after a surgery, so she comes to the Vargas Family Ranch and Resort where she meets the blunt and at times antagonizing, Derin.

A quick read with many familiar faces at the Vargas Ranch, I liked Derin's family and how they were supportive of him taking over this leadership role. Derin was hard to like at times because of his former ways, but I respected how far he had come and how he was careful not to make those same mistakes again. I especially liked his friend Cole, who was always looking out for him, and was a true Christian friend to him, throughout.

Overall, it was a harder book than the others in the series for me to like because I didn't like who Derin had been in the past, and thought that his previous behavior could have really hurt his family. But in the end, it was an entertaining and enjoyable read, and I liked that Derin had turned to God and given up his past for good. Madison is a disciplined athlete, and I liked how she and Derin become friends, giving her a new perspective on the future. A good addition to the series!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

101 Questions

In Falling for a Bossy Cowboy, Derin Vargas desperately wants to change how he sees and interacts with women. One of his buddies recommended an app for 101 Questions to Ask on a Date.

When I incorporated this into the novel, the interactions between Madison and Derin became so much easier (and fun!) to write. I searched for new questions and added them with answers from the character’s point of view.

But where did this idea come from? A marriage seminar. I highly recommend using 101 questions for any couple, married or just dating. It’s a great way to get to know the person you’re with, without all the awkward “what do we talk about?”.

I hope you enjoy this excerpt from Falling for a Bossy Cowboy from Madison Moore’s point of view.

______

Madison watched as Derin pulled his phone from his shirt pocket, swiping and tapping a few times. Then he looked up, expression serious, and asked the most bizarre question.

“If you were stranded on a deserted island and could choose any three things to have with you, what would you pick and why?”

“What?” Her eyes rounded.

“You heard the question, Madi.”

She chewed slowly, mulling it over.

“That’s hard.”

“Right?” He chuckled.

“What would you pick?”

“No dodging it. I’ll answer after you do.”

“Ugh. Let’s assume I have food and water.”

Derin narrowed his eyes and conceded.

“My Bible.”

He rolled his eyes.

“What? It’s a legit answer.”

“So says every church goer. Next?”

“You wouldn’t?”

He wagged a finger at her as he stabbed a chunk of roast before popping it in his mouth.

“Chocolate.”

Derin tossed his head back and chuckled loudly. So much so that a few heads turned their direction. “Women.”

“And a Costco-sized bag of ground coffee.”

“How are you making the coffee?”

“I don’t know. I’m sure I could figure it out.”

Madison pushed her empty plate away. “Your turn.”

“First choice? You.”

Heat flamed her cheeks. What was he saying?

“Second choice would be Djano.”

Madison quirked an eyebrow.

“My horse. And that’s only because you put the stipulation that food and water aren’t an issue. So, he won’t starve.”

She snorted. “Me and your horse.”

“Yup. And my hat. That’s it.”

“Me, your horse, and your hat.” She shook her head. “Why me?”

Derin’s eyes glinted with mirth. “You’re insanely beautiful. Smart. Very entertaining.”

Her cheeks warmed at the compliment.

“We would fight like cats and dogs.”

He shook his head. “I’m not buying that.”

“I can’t stand you.”

“Not buying that either.” Derin grinned. “Here’s another one. Have you ever won an award for a sport?”

Madison snatched up the phone. “Huh. That’s really the question. What is this?”

“One hundred and one questions to ask on a date.”

“Is this a date?”

“Welcome to the party, Madi.”

Heat warmed her face. Derin was one of a kind. She shook her head and handed him his phone.

 My Review:

A wonderful collection of thought provoking devotions covering the book of James and selections from  Proverbs.

Each chapter opens with a Scripture passage, often utilizing various translations and paraphrases, which is then followed up with a thoughtful devotion, and closes with a prayer. I loved the themes of finding joy in the midst of suffering, as well as the encouragement I found in the reminders that we are never alone. I was initially surprised by the sections on Proverbs, but I really enjoyed them and found them to be one of my favorite parts of the book.

Overall, a well written and cohesive collection, it would make an excellent gift for a friend. I liked the strong relatability of each of the chapters, as well as how concise each of the chapters was. A good devotion to kick start your day, with a strong dose of truth and encouragement.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

More from Anita

Life is broken. We keep trying and trying—and trying—to make something worthwhile out of life, but no matter what we do on our own, it’s still a hopelessly shattered mess. When we allow Christ to love His way into our lives, we discover this miraculous thing called grace. He can take what is fractured by sin and refashion it into a magnificent work of art. And He gives us a new lightness of heart and a livelier step. Best of all, paradise has been regained! Yes, that is us—when we journey humbly with Him.

It has been said that some of James’ inspired writings have similarities to the Book of Proverbs. So, I am hopeful you will also enjoy—Pausing for Proverbs—the little inset devotions, which are enfolded into this work.

May these ninety devotions and your journey with James flood your life with hope, ripen your faith, and transform you into a woman who knows how to dance in God’s light and His wonderful ways of joy…

Wonderfully, Marvelously Brown, follows a young boy on a joyously affirming adventure that celebrates all shades of brown, from the darkest to the lightest.

From new school desks to freckles and moles, from fresh pastries to cedar canoes, brown is everywhere around us. God created and used brown to color the giant California redwoods, the Grand Canyon walls, busy beavers building dams, great horned owls hoo-hooing, and his image-bearers.

Everywhere that I go
I’m searching to see
something wonderfully, marvelously
brown—just like you and like me!

Illustrated by Pura Belpré Honor Award artist Sara Palacios and written by Xochitl Dixon, Wonderfully, Marvelously Brown takes kids on a tour of the U.S. to seek and find all the brilliant and beautiful shades of brownfrom ivory to ebonythat God created. Readers will be encouraged to love the skin tone God chose for them as they observe how the spectacular shades of brown are reflected in their communities and the world around them.

 My Review:

An upbeat read, told in lyrical rhyme celebrating every shade and all the things and people that are brown.

I loved how the book celebrates our differences and uniqueness in the way that God made us, as well as the beauty of creation. It was also fun to see the celebration of other cultures, and traditions. A fun book to read with children, accompanied by lovely illustrations that bring the whimsy and beauty of the colors. The rhyming structure, makes it super fun to read aloud.

Overall, a lovely book about loving yourself and appreciating all the shades of brown in the world all around us!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

More from Xochitl

I’m a first-generation Mexican American raised by Spanish-speaking immigrant grandparents and parents, who taught me to be invisible and believed assimilation would lead to a better life for me. The racism and colorism I experienced throughout my life caused me to grapple with my identity, self-worth, and my sense of belonging. However, I was in third grade the first time I stood against injustice. In my teen years, my passion for celebrating ethnic diversity and standing against injustice while advocating for disability awareness and inclusion grew.

Then, in 1994, I married a man who shared my passions. As a first-generation Mexican American raised by immigrant parents and grandparents, a wife to a Black man, a stepmother to a Black son, and a mother of a biracial son, my commitment to stand against racial injustice became even more personal.

I submitted my life to Christ in 2001 and began asking the Holy Spirit to make me more like Jesus. That same year, after a student used a racial slur toward our biracial son, I wrote Different Like Me.

As God empowered me to love Him and my neighbors with a healthy and holy perspective, God began to grow our beautifully diverse family. My youngest granddaughter, whose father is Black, shared that kids teased her because she doesn’t look like her sisters, who share the same white father. I assured her that the melanin God uses to color all skin is brown, from the lightest to the darkest shades. Then, I told her that I would be writing Wonderfully, Marvelously Brown.

In 2020, Our Daily Bread published Different Like Me. As I edited What Color is God’s Love? and Wonderfully, Marvelously Brown, God continued affirming that He did not create the divisive and oppressive systems that label His image-bearers as “white” or “black” and feed the ignorance of racism or colorism. Instead, He designed melanin to include every spectacular shade of brown from the darkest ebony to the lightest ivory, even in those He created with birth marks, vitiligo, and albinism.

God intentionally selected every skin tone for every person He created and loves, His image-bearers. He calls every shade of brown good, including the shade of brown He used when He created you and me. As we celebrate our God-designed ethnic diversity, we can share the Good News of Jesus Christ as we love God and all our neighbors together.
