Voice of the Ancient by Connilyn Cossette // Review

My Review:

A compelling new chapter in Cossette's Old Testament Saga that stands well on it's own, but is also a wonderful addition with familiar faces that you will recognize if you have been following along.

Avidan goes with his cousins to fight with the newly anointed Saul, but a rift separates him from his cousins and instead his path crosses with that of Keziah, who is escaping an unwanted marriage. Together can they face the challenges before them and trust in the Mighty God who brought them together?

A well crafted novel set in the tumultuous time right after Saul is anointed king over Israel, I loved how the author brings this time period to life, showing the division and disunity of the times. Keziah has a beautiful horse, I loved his loyalty to her and protective nature. Avidan is a faithful friend, and I liked seeing how he matures over the course of the book, recalling the histories of his people and sharing it with others.

Overall, this was a well done Biblical novel about a time period that I don't think I've often seen tackled in fiction before. I liked how the author brings to life the times through fictional characters, so that we can imagine what life might have been like for the Israelites. Engaging and well written, with captivating characters, plenty of adventure, romance and faith.

One Last Stand by Susan May Warren // Review

Lucie's Review:

London Brook's past is coming after her, and she must stay one step ahead in order to keep them from taking everything and everyone she loves again. Shep doesn't know everything in London's past, but he knows that now that he's found her again he will do everything he can to help her put her past to rest.

A fast paced read, with plenty of familiar faces, with a twisting plot that kept me on my toes. I liked the blend of high stakes suspense with dangerous surviving against the wilderness. Great protagonists, with wonderful character development along the way. I liked how Shep is determined to be by London's side through all of this.

Overall, a great addition to the series, with a lot going on and great side plots as well. Strong themes of faith, as well as trust in this high stakes read.

A Ballet for the People by Lillian Joubert // Review

My Review:

Ballet and forbidden love in the face of a contentious senate election.

Max is running for re-election on community values and public service, not used to hob-nobbing with the rich stock that Mia Hamiliton and her politically aspiring family comes from. Can two people from opposite sides of the political aisle fight for their quickly blooming love against those bent on sabotaging them?

A sweet romance of forbidden love, and finding yourself. Mia has always loved danced, but has struggled to measure up to her high achieving brother. I loved how she found the strength to cut a different path than expected, and found something beautiful to pour her talents into.

A clean romantic read, with tension, family drama, dance, with themes of standing up for what you believe in and yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Emma Jane's Guide to Matchmaking the Mayor by Drew Taylor // Review

My Review:

A cute modern spin on a classic tale, with this charming Southern re-telling of Jane Austen's Emma

This modern rom-com does a great job of capturing the essence of the original story, while making it her own, with a well meaning and charming protagonist, flirty humor, and a good dose of faith. While the references to the classic are pretty on the nose, I think that the author did a great job of taking the inspiration and making it fresh.

Emma is as much a flawed protagonist as she ever was, but still as lovable despite it all, with her own struggles and challenges to face. I loved how Knightley is always there for her when she needs him and isn't afraid to let her know when she's been shortsighted, but he loves her all the same.

Overall, such a fun read with a fun political spin to it. An enjoyable rom-com great for fans of friends-to-more romance!

Cornered by Lynette Eason, Lynn H. Blackburn, Natalie Walters // Review

Lucie's Review:

In the Dark by Lynette Eason
Steph Cross discovers cryptic notes in the wake of her friend's untimely death, leading her to think that there was more to her death than originally stated. Rookie Detective Tate Cooper is determined to prove himself on his first case, working alongside his partner and boss's sister.

An engaging read with likable protagonists and a riveting plot, I liked the relationship building as they uncovered the secrets together. Good tension throughout, with solid themes of faith.

Downfall by Lynn H. Blackburn
A feuding family in a resort town. Cassie Quinn is a chef, and she takes a job at the resort despite her family's reservations about the bad blood between the families. When the resort's kitchen is destroyed it is clear that someone is after her. Her only option is to work with her ex, Dt Donovan Bledsoe. Can they get to the bottom of the targeted sabotage before it's too late?

A fast paced read, with escalating suspense as the danger increases. Great suspense, with a second chance romance, good teamwork and relationship building. Highly enjoyable!

Perilous Obsession by Natalie Walters
Teacher Lehela Young turns to her friend Briggs Turner when she finds that she is being stalked, endangering her students. Can they get to the bottom of things before it's too late?

A well written read, with a sweet friend to lovers romance. A suspenseful read, with a plot that kept me guessing till the end. I liked the great relationship between the main characters, and solid faith. Highly recommend!

 Lucie's Review:

A holiday grumpy-sunshine romance, that brings us back to the Vargas Family Ranch, with Drake still reeling from the secrets of his past.

Drake has a lot of reasons to be less than thrilled going into this holiday season, still coming to terms with the news of his family, while managing the food services and coffee shop on the ranch. Candi Kaine breezes into his life with her annoyingly infectious high spirits, always up for a challenge especially if it means bringing a smile to a humbug cowboy's face. Candi is a good compliment to Drake's hardened exterior, helping him to open up about what he has gone through.

I loved the interaction between Candi and Drake, as the themes of faith and family. I loved how welcoming the family was towards Candi, and how this story brought everyone together for the holidays, making for a great conclusion to the series.

Overall, a fantastic addition to a wonderful series! Definitely recommend!

Inspiring My Christmas Mood by Karen Baney

In Falling for a Humbug Cowboy, I had a lot of fun incorporating classic holiday songs (and the occasional Christmas story) into scenes to add flavor and sometimes intensify the character’s feelings.

It was purely accidental at first. I love classic Christmas songs and during the holiday season my hubby and I listen to a lot of Holiday Traditions on Sirius XM.

So, when I described a scene where Candi helps Drake decorate the dining hall, I just wrote that she switched the overhead music to a Christmas station and belted out Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer. The next thing I know, I’m three song mentions in. So, I decided to make deliberate use of songs.

When I was struggling to get in the mood to write a Christmas novel in the dead of summer (108+ in July in Arizona!), I loaded up my phone with several playlists. One of the first songs was Feliz Navidad and I knew I had to find a way to use it. It would be the perfect song to show off Candi’s fun personality and draw Drake out of his humbug mood.

I hope you enjoy this Christmas playlist from the novel with a few sneak peaks of how I used the songs:

  • Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer – Candi belts out the tune while working.
  • White Christmas by Bing Crosby – Candi “crooned along with Bing Crosby, making a nice duet”.
  • The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole – causes Drake to picture holding Candi close, swaying to the music.
  • Holly Jolly Christmas by Burl Ives – playing while Drake helps Candi with a rush of customers.
  • Feliz Navidad – Candi dances around Drake until she gets him to dance and sing along.
  • I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm by Dean Martin – Candi notices the not-so-humbug cowboy walking away, ratcheting up her interest.
  • Christmas in Your Eyes by Travis Shaw – playing during a special moment between Drake and Candi.
  • It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas by Michael Bublé – Candi’s lunch with a friend.
  • Mele Kalikimaka – Driving to Flagstaff together to play in the snow.
  • All I want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey – sets the stage for Drake’s proposal on July 25th (Christmas in July).

What’s your favorite Christmas song? By a specific artist or any artist? Please share in the comments, I’d love to know. 😊

Now back at her family ranch she finds herself and her family the target of the crime bosses of the cartel, that's when the mysterious Cameron Wolfe steps into the picture. A man with a bounty on his head, deep in hiding with a shadowed past, who offers his help to Brianna.

A fast paced suspense, with well written action scenes and a high octane plot. I loved the well developed characters, strong faith, and relationship building along the way. I loved the western setting and gripping storytelling. Well worth the read!

Lucie's Review:

Shae went into witness protection for six years, hiding from the crime family who wants her to pay for how she helped put the patriarch away. The only person she can rely on is former FBI Mason Payne, who is also the father of her daughter.

A fast paced suspense, as Mason, Shae, and Gracie try to stay one step ahead of the the deadly gang bent on retribution. The story jumps right into the action, but also has some sweet relationship building moments. I liked how Mason instantly steps up and works with Shae to keep them safe and get to know little Gracie.

An entertaining read with a good plot and great characters. Shae is a great mother, raising her daughter to trust in God and giving her courage. I liked the strong themes of faith, the suspense, and second change romance. A very enjoyable Christmas suspense!

A Guardian Till Christmas by Danielle Thorne // Review

Lucie's Review:

Big city business woman Kylee Spokes gains custody of a pair of four-year-old twins after sudden death of her sister and her husband. Her plans to return to the city are delayed when she finds herself out of her depth with children, paramedic Evan Hollister isn't about to abandon his godchildren, so he offers to help share the responsibility for the kids as they find their new normal.

A heartwarming romance where big city meets small town, the children are adorable and are craving stability after their world fell apart. Evan is great with the kids, and has known them all their lives. I liked how he helps Kylee think of things in a new light, and encourages her to get in touch with her roots.

Overall, a sweet heartwarming Christmas romance with great characters, faith and family in a small town. Great for fans of cozy Christmas movies!

The Winter Rose by Melanie Dickerson // Review

My Review:
A compelling split time novel of faith and resilience in the face of war and heartbreak.

Addie Hoult comes to Tonquin Lake at a crossroads in life, looking for answers to help her beloved mentor, Charlie who is fighting for his life against a genetic blood disorder. Decades earlier the daughter of a well known actress fights to protect the lives of Jewish children from the terrors of WWII.

Gripping and emotionally deep with a solid core of faith. Grace Tonquin is a resilient heroine facing unimaginable risks to save the lives of children from the Nazis. I admired her determination, faith, and her heart for helping others even when it was far from easy.

Overall, this was a gripping and immersive read with complex characters but an anchoring thread of hope that ran throughout, root in faith in God. Engaging and thought provoking read, with excellent character development and a compelling plot. Highly recommend!

An Honorable Deception by Roseanna M. White // Review

My Review:

Utterly satisfying, and my favorite novel of the series!

When the Imposters are hired by a young woman to find her missing ayah, it is quickly revealed that they have stumbled on something bigger and more sinister than they imagined.

I loved how this book follows multiple characters, running a gambit of emotions, delving into society's dark underside with gravity, with complex characters overcoming trauma, faith, romance, laced with witty banter, and Yate's wry musings. Lavinia is ready to heal, and I admired her bravery and selfless heart putting others before herself, as well as how she reached out in befriending Alethia, recognizing a hearting heart.

An excellent novel from beginning to end, I'm still processing everything, and I can't pick a favorite character because I loved them all! I loved the themes of overcoming the past and forgiving with God's help. And it was great to see another side of Xavier. Well worth the read and an all time favorite of mine from Roseanna M. White!

Cloaked in Beauty by Karen Witemeyer // Review

Review:

A fantastic addition to the series, and my personal favorite, is a wild west mash-up of Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty, full of heart, courage, faith and love.

Raised away from the typical trappings of wealth, Letty Hood isn't your typical heiress. Now the time has come for her to claim her rightful place as heir of her father's companies, but the road is far from easy with danger at every turn. Pinkerton Agent Philip Carmichael has been entrusted with ensuring her safety, he is a man of noble character, protective of her and impressed by her capability. I liked how he always wanted the best for her, fighting for her to have options, and protecting her at every turn.

I liked how Letty was confident and competent, despite her sheltered life, she knew what she believed and how to stand up for herself. Her grandmother and mother are both strong women of faith who have instilled values in Letty and are brilliant at whatever they put their mind to.

A captivating read that swept me away into a western fairy tale adventure romance that I never wanted to end! An engaging and original take on classic inspirations, along with strong likeable protagonists who are pure perfection together. Truly one of my very favorite reads this year, and a stand out in the series. Highly recommend!

Deadly Revenge by Patrica Bradley // Review

Lucie's Review:

Deputy Jenna Hart returns to her hometown of Pearl River after things sour for her in Chattanooga, she gets tapped to help protect the a senate candidate with a dubious past, while warding off personal threats against Jenna stemming from what happened in Chattanooga.

A small town thriller, filled with suspense, strong characters, and a plot that draws you in. I liked seeing the familiar faces from the previous books in the series, but this book could also stand alone. There was a lot going, and I liked seeing Jenna and Max get to know each other as they worked together to neutralize the threats. Almost non-stop action, with mysteries that kept me guessing.

Overall, a excellent addition a wonderful series, full of action, great suspense, strong characters, romance and faith. I liked how it kept me on my toes, and am excited to read more from Ms. Bradley in the future.

Heart Games 3: A Christian (Christmas) Romance Puzzling Experience by Amanda Hamm // Review

Lucie's Review:

A delightful Christmas time read with accompanying puzzles to solve along with sisters, Monica and Martha, as they celebrate Christmas with their family and friends.

I was so excited to trying this puzzling experience for the 1st time because two of very favorite things are Christian romance and doing logic puzzles. This was such a fun way to spend an afternoon, the books goes through three scenes, and there are themed accompanying puzzles with hints and answers in the back if you need some help.

A wonderful combination of my favorite things, and a great afternoon pastime or gift for someone you love.

More from Dana

My life has gone to the dogs! No joke! While readers enjoy the Wolfe family humans, I hear on the regular that their favorite characters are the bloodhounds. In book #1, Wally was just an irrepressible disaster, and he continues his naughty ways throughout the series. In book #2, we met Pinkerton who is a model canine, unless squirrels enter the picture. And now, you’ll get to know Chloe who is fabulous, but I will venture to say she is going to be outshined by her mutt companion Brutus (you’ll have to read the book to discover his real name and identity!) As this book launches, I’m deep into writing the last two and there are a couple more unpredictable hounds you have yet to meet. Such fun! Thanks for galloping along with me on this series!

You Are a Child of God by Michelle Alisa Fritch // Coloring Book Review and Giveaway

You Are a Child of God
is a faith-based children’s coloring book designed to be shared between a child and their caregiver. This helps foster meaningful connections and conversations about God’s love from a young age.

The book draws from verses like Psalm 139:13-18 and Jeremiah 29:11 to remind children of their identity in Christ.

You Are a Child of God is more than a book - each page invites children (and adults) to color, creating a calming and creative experience while reading and engaging with Scripture.

The holidays are just around the corner, and You Are a Child of God is a thoughtful gift for someone special. Whether it’s for parents expecting a little one, children in your family, or even a friend who loves creative, faith-filled activities, this book offers something meaningful. It’s not just a coloring book - it’s a way to reflect on God’s love and create wonderful memories. It’s also a perfect stocking stuffer for Sunday school students or a unique addition to a family’s faith journey. Give a gift that inspires and shares God’s love this season!

Order You Are a Child of God today, in time for Christmas! https://tinyurl.com/27kby2ez

Author Bio: Michelle Fritch is a child of God, a mother of three, an ordained Episcopal Priest, and a counselor who fiercely believes that love can change the world.

My Review:

A beautiful gift for the child in your life, filled with lovely colors and a message of meaning and encouragement.

Part gift book, part coloring book, this book is written and laid out in a eye-catching manner on colored pages, with sections designated for coloring. The coloring book portions are simpler in design, and meld together as part of the book, and when your child is done coloring, it can be kept as a beautiful keepsake book.

A lovely book to read to your young one at night, it would also make a great gift for expecting parents. Wonderful gift for the special child in your life that you want to know is so precious and loved by you, and by God, and hopefully it will open conversations on how to live a life of faith.

Code Name Edelweiss by Stephanie Landsem // Review

My Review:

Struggling to make ends meet in the grips of the Great Depression, Leisl Weiss, takes a job cloaked in mystery for Leon Lewis as a spy, unearthing a dangerous secret with chilling repercussions.

Well done historical novel that drew me in with it's compelling characters and heart tugging storyline, filled with tension and suspense along the way. Leisl is a devoted mother, working hard to support her 2 children, mother, and brother after the disappearance of her husband, and I admired her determination to see it through, as well as her quick thinking.

I liked how Thirteen was shadowy at first, and how we slowly get to know him as the story progresses.

Overall, a story rich in history with excellent characters, a riveting plot, with gripping suspense. A highly satisfying read!

The Cowboy's Christmas Treasures by Jill Kemerer // Just Read

Lucie's Review:

Dean McCaffrey returns home to take the reigns of his father's contracting business, but he holds onto a paralyzing secret.

Dean picks up where his dad left off with remodeling Brooke's home, her two-year-old twin girls take a shine to him. Brooke is a widowed single mom, worried that her health will keep her from caring for her daughters. Dean admires Brooke for her devotion to her daughters, and he offers to help her when he can, and they connect over their shared faith and giving God the things they can't control.

Megan and Alice are so adorable, and they love being around Dean. A heartwarming second chance romance, with strong faith, themes of new starts and trusting God. I liked how he reconnected with his father, and his small town roots. Dean and Brooke make a good team, and I liked seeing them work together.  Highly recommend this Christmas western romance!

My Review:

Made with children in mind, this brightly colored Bible instantly caught my eye, impressing me with the thoughtfulness with which it was constructed.

When I first saw this Bible advertised, I instantly thought, "What a great idea!" Printed using a special font to increase readability, as well as a size 11 type, with 40 colorful inserts with book summaries, guides, maps, and themed reference lists, it is inviting from the get go. Using the Christian Standard Bible translation, which prioritizes accuracy and readability, it is a perfect fit for elementary age and beyond into adulthood. I especially liked the emphasis on connecting the readers to the people, themes, and context of the Bible, throughout the inserts as well as with the appendix that include a cross reference list that connect the OT quotes in the NT to the original text in the OT. I will note that it took time for me to get used to the book chapter indicators being at the bottom of the page instead of the top as I am used to, so navigating took some adjusting on my part.

But that's not all, it also comes with 10 colored overlays in various colors to help readers with dyslexia process the text better, there are options to play around with and find what works best for them.

I could not be more impressed with this Bible, the presentation is excellent, with a wonderful understanding of it's target audience, and great design throughout. Excellent choice for a full text Bible for the young person in your life!

The Queen's Cook by Tessa Afshar // Review

My Review:

An immersive novel that brings Queen Esther's Court to life through the eyes of a talented cook, kind physician, and the queen herself.

Beautifully written, compelling, with characters that captured my heart. Roxannah grew up hiding in the shadow of her father's cruel ways, but her talent for flavor may be her family's only hope after her father leaves them destitute. I admired her determination, and her loyalty, as she works to prove her self in the royal kitchens. I especially liked her gentle natured way of winning others with honesty and kindness.

A richly woven novel with evocative descriptions and an attention to detail that brings the story to life. I loved how the novel was told in the midst of things, as well as from memory looking back, which added a depth of personality to the storytelling, and a unique touch. I loved the fresh take on one of the Old Testament's most beloved stories, as the author draws from extensive research, and historical details to vibrantly bring the court to life. I enjoyed the themes of standing up to your enemies in the face of opposition, something that sounds good, but in reality is much harder to practice!

Overall, a riveting and compelling tale that will grab you by the heartstrings, and have you hanging on to find out what happens next, as Queen Esther's story is told through fresh eyes, with enduring themes of forgiveness, faith, and facing your fears.

 Review:

A heartwarming romance, with likable and compelling characters.

Devon Vargas is looking at a future beyond the Vargas Ranch, when he discovers a secret that rocks his foundation. He enjoys working with kids and is pursuing a job in teaching. Raina grew up in foster care, and is passionate about advocating for children. I liked how Devon and Raina bonded over their passion for helping children, and shared faith. Devon and Raina both struggled through things, but were there for each other throughout. I really liked Devon's parents and how they supported him in trying a new career.

I liked that Raina was passionate about helping children, she and Devon were a good team. This was a great addition to the series, and I liked learning more about the fabric of the Vargas family and their history.

Overall, a wonderful addition to the series with strong faith, great interaction, and compelling characters. A highly enjoyable read!

Big Family Drama

I love writing big family drama in my novels! It provides such great material for the relationship between characters.

Part of this comes from my family’s drama. My mom was the youngest of eight kids, making my extended family huge. I remember going to the Independence Day family reunions as a kid. It was both fun and a little intimidating. Most of my cousins were adults by the time I was a tweener. So, my siblings and I tended to hangout with my “oops!” cousin since we were only a few years apart.

And boy, did we have drama! There was the aunt who seemed to be offended and left early year. Someone always ended up injured, but only once do I remember an ambulance showing up. There were cliques and turf wars and so much more.

As an adult, though I’ve rarely been able to fly clear across the country to see my extended family, the drama of my husband’s big family serves as inspiration too. He is the oldest of five kids. My first introduction to his large family was at his sister’s wedding. I had no idea what I was getting into. We’d only been dating for about six weeks. Everyone kept pushing me to join the family photos, and I kept trying to gracefully get out of the pictures. I didn’t want him to regret having me in the pictures if we broke up. In the end, my hubby and I outlasted that marriage.

In Falling for a Smart Cowboy, I introduce a new character to the series, Raina Crawford. She was orphaned as a young girl and has longed for a forever family, even into adulthood. Devon Vargas, the fourth out of five sons, learns a family secret that makes him want to avoid his large family. I loved writing this juxtaposition between Raina and Devon over family relationships. It helps each of them see a new perspective. It was also fun writing new friendships for Raina—even if all the friendships tied to Devon’s family. My experience with both my family and being a newbie to my husband’s family provided inspiration for both Raina’s and Devon’s characters.

If you like big family drama, the Vargas Ranch Series provides it in spades. Enjoy!
