Of Stillness and Storm by Michele Phoenix ~ Review

Of Stillness and StormMy Review:

Lauren follows her missionary husband, Sam, to Nepal, a country racked by poverty, unstable government, and terrifying beauty. She does her best to be a good wife to Sam, and mother to their 13 year old son, Ryan, but with Sam away three weeks to every one week at home, and Ryan slowly slipping into sullenness, she struggles to hear God's reassurance in being in Nepal.

Suddenly an old friend comes back into her life with  startling news, that leaves Lauren pulled in two different directions, straddling two worlds, her present and her past.

I was drawn to this book because of the setting. I work in health clinic where we see many Bhutanese/Nepali refugees, and they have many intriguing stories of the poverty, corrupt government, unpredictable landslides, and day to day instability and how few the opportunities are few for employment in Nepal. So when I saw this book I wanted to read it to learn more about beautiful but heartbreaking land. Ms. Phoenix did a great job of painting a realistic picture of the poverty that is present in many regions, showing the stark differences from life in the USA.

Lauren struggles to be the poster missionary's wife, where Sam has always been a dreamer, idealistic, yet determined, Lauren has always played it safe. The story is told in the present day with flashbacks to when they first met in Austria, and what eventually brought them to Nepal. We also get a peek into her childhood friendship with Aidan, and how everything brings them to where they are now.

I liked the stark rawness of this book and how it shows a different more honest side of missionary life, that it isn't all glamour, tent revivals, miraculous medical treatments, but it can be lonely and desolate as well. I think that Ms. Phoenix did an amazing job with the characters, and bringing them to life, I felt that I could see why many of them did what they did, and how their different personalities and mindsets affected their choices throughout.

Overall, a well written and thoughtful read, full of emotions and memories, good and bad. I loved and hated the bittersweet ending, but applaud this novel for tackling a unique setting and subject.

Love Bears All Things by Beth Wiseman ~ Review

Love Bears All Things (Amish Secrets, #2)
My Review:

Caroline has been evicted from her apartment in the city, and her boyfriend Ryan has left her for another woman. So she decides to return to Lancaster County, to stay with Hannah's family, and try to sell her late brother's home.
But before she leaves, Jacob shows up on her doorstep, wanting to see and experience more than the Amish life that he has lived for 17 years.

When Caroline returns she uncovers more secrets about her brother, as she tries to help Jacob's family come to terms with his dreams She befriends Daniel Byler, and his sister, Annie, who loves Jacob.

More secrets are brought to light as Caroline looks for answers to her brother's suicide.

The second book in a series, this book isn't hard to pick up on, yet I would still recommend reading this book along with the first one so as to understand the dynamics and what is going on better. I didn't read the first book, so I had some catching up to do and somethings to figure out.

I really liked Caroline, and I feel that she has grown a lot over the course of her journey, I liked her willingness to help others, and her big heart. Caroline has a secret in her past, and she cares very much for her adopted Amish family, and does her best to be honest with them and to help them out.

I really liked Daniel and his fierce protectiveness of his sister, and how willing he was to help others. He is honorable, and he doesn't let differences deter him from doing what is right.

Overall, a wonderful book of family, friendship, and forgiveness, as well as faith. Caroline has grown over the course of this series, and it has been good to see her get her life in order, and find peace. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Cowboy Christmas Homecoming by Mary Connealy, Ruth Logan Herne, Julie Lessman, and Anna Schimdt ~ Review

Cowboy Christmas Homecoming
Lucie's Review:

Last Chance Christmas
Now a new believer, Grace wants to turn her life around. She arrives in Last Chance, CA, to help her childhood friend Eileen, but instead finds that her friend has died, leaving behind her pastor husband and 4 children.

Colton is in a bind, and he accepts Grace's unexpected help. Grace quickly befriends the children, and even though she can't cook, she even wins over Aunt Millie.

I loved the way that this story all came together, with humor, surprises, great characters, and dialog. I really liked Colton's sense of honor and how he stand up for her when her past comes calling.

A Cowboy for Christmas
June is willing to do anything to care for and provide for her two daughters, after losing their home in a fire. She is not alone, and she and her friends look for work and care for each other's children, rejoicing in each other's small victories.

Hugh Stackman learns about the families the displaced by the fires, and he wants to help them opening his home to them. Having the women staying with them helps Hugh's sister, Lily, come out of her shell.

June is a woman of strong faith, who stands firm despite the adversity in her life. June admires Hugh for his generosity but knows that he doesn't share her faith. This is a great story with threads that are like a re-telling of Ruth and Boaz.

Longhorn Christmas
Roy Hollister rushes to the rescue of Nettie and her son Jeremiah, saving them from a longhorn named Cyclone.

Nettie lives on her family's ranch, and since the death of her husband and father, has been struggling to keep everything running smoothly. So she offers Roy a job.

I liked how Nettie welcomes Roy into their Christmas and how Roy tells Jeremiah a part of the Christmas story every night. One of my favorite stories in the collection, and I loved the humor, dialog, and characters.

Connie's Christmas Prayer
Isaac Porterfield knows what he wants in life, he bought a ranch in Arizona and is ready to settle down. Isaac becomes a regular at Connie's mother's restaurant, often eating with them and helping them clean up. He wins over her mother, but Connie still wants to return to St. Louis.

I like how Connie grows and matures over the course of the book, and comes to see more possibilities for her life than going back home.

Isaac is a patient man of faith, who takes action and goes after what he wants.

A wonderful collection of novellas, enjoyable till the last. Great stories about brae women, and the cowboys that capture their hearts.

Classified Christmas Mission by Lynette Eason ~ Review

Classified Christmas Mission (Wrangler's Corner #4)Lucie's Review:

Deputy Sheriff Lance Goode recognizes the driver of the car before an SUV forces it off the road, and he rushes to Amber Starke's aid.

Amber has been working as a nanny to the Pirhadi home, secretly as an undercover CIA agent to protect Sam, a young autistic boy, as she tries to collect evidence on his father. Sam's mother was helping Amber, but now she is dead, and Amber and Sam are on the run.

Lance sees he need and refuses to let her go it alone, he gather back up, and convinces her to let her brother know what is going on as well. But still it will be a fight against the clock to keep Amber and Sam safe, and stay one step ahead of Pirhadi's game.

Amber understands Sam and cares for him deeply, she has papers signing his custody to her and she would like to keep it that way. Even though Sam isn't like other children, he is brilliant at math and has an excellent memory.

Lance takes time to get to know Sam and introduces him to Chess, and give him math problems to help him take his medicine. Lance and Amber get to know each other again, and Lance tells Amber about his past. Amber has always admired Lance, and knows that he is a man that she can trust.

I liked the fast pace of the storytelling, from the very beginning I was cheering for Amber, Lance, and Sam. There is pretty much non-stop action all the way through, and fantastic dialog. I loved the depth of Sam's character, he was so well written from beginning to end. A thrilling read with a heart pounding climax. Fantastic, utterly fantastic!

Pony Express Christmas Bride by Rhonda Gibson ~ Review

Pony Express Christmas Bride (Saddles and Spurs)Lucie's Review:

Josephine Dooly cuts her hair and takes a job with the Pony Express as "Jo," in order to escape the arranged marriage that her uncle is trying to force her into. She rides with the Express until she arrives at Young's Pony Express Station, where she is to meet the man that she has agreed to marry by answering and ad for a mail-order bride.

Thomas and Philip Young run a station not far from their adoptive mother's, and ride for the Express as well. Philip is there to meet Jo and bring her to Thomas, who has no idea that she is coming to marry him.

Hazel Gorman is there when she arrives and she offers to let her stay with her while she and Thomas are figuring things out. I liked how she was there to give good advice to Thomas and Josephine while they are getting to know each other.

Josephine fits easily in with the brothers, and she quickly proves herself to be a hard worker cleaning the house from top to bottom and finding ways to make delicious and diverse meals. She is determined to make the best out of this situation, and adapts quickly to life in the country. I liked the dialog between Josephine and Thomas as they get to know each other as strangers to friends.

Thomas is completely surprised by Josephine, she is that last thing that he was expecting to show up, but she might just be what he needs. I liked how Thomas took the time to get to know Josephine and he went out of his way to do things for her.  Thomas is very protective of Josephine and he is a man of honor and integrity and honor who stands by his word.

This is a delightful read, full of surprises and great interaction between the characters. One of my favorite things was the friendship and camaraderie between Thomas and his brother Philip. A very enjoyable read.

Rookie K-9 Unit Christmas by Valerie Hansen and Lenora Worth ~ Review

Rookie K-9 Unit Christmas/Surviving Christmas/Holiday High Alert
Lucie's Review:

Two exciting novellas in this Christmas edition of  The Rookie K-9 Unit.

Surviving Christmas -- Zoe Trent is in Desert Valley, AZ, training with her K-9 partner, Freya. When she gets a call from an old friend, Sean Murphey, when someone breaks into his apartment with the intention of harming him and his son, Patrick. Zoe offers for them to stay with her.

It's up to Zoe and Sean to get to the bottom of who is trying to harm Patrick.

I liked the way that Zoe encourages Patrick to be brave and try new things, and she and Freya help him to overcome his fears. Zoe also encourages Sean, and lets him know that even though bad things have happened that it doesn't mean that God has left them.

Holiday High Alert --  Josie Calhoun is waiting with one of her students, Maisy, for Maisy's dad to pick her up, when she hears a strange noise outside. When Maisy's father, Dalton West shows up, he offers to check it out.

Josie begins to get strange, threatening messages, so Dalton offers to help her get to the bottom of things. As the danger increases and the stakes are raised, they must find out who is behind the messages before it's too late.

I like Josie, she stands p for herself, and doesn't let fear get in the way of her doing her job.  She and Dalton get to know each other  as they work on the case together, encouraging each other along the way. I like how both of them have clung to their faith through the challenging things in their pasts.

Dalton has wanted to get to know Josie for a long time, but has felt guilty since the death of his wife. But Josie not only helps him to understand, but to help him realize that his daughter is also struggling with her mother's death.

Both of the stories are fast paced, filled with action and faith. I liked the suspense and the strong characters that fought to protect who they loved. There was great interaction between the characters, and I loved the elements of humor. A great read for Christmas time.

Sleigh Bells Ring: Four Contemporary Romance Novellas by Sandra D. Bricker, Barbara J. Scott, Lynette Sowell, and Lenora Worth ~ Review

Sleigh Bells Ring
Lucie's Review:

The four Tucker sisters inherit a ranch, upon the death of their father, but it will need a lot of work to be able to sell it.

In All I Want for Christmas Joanna Tucker returns to her childhood home after the death of her father, and as she is going though the boxes she remembers the good times they had together as a family. So she invites her sisters down to have one last Christmas together on the ranch.

Jed Weatherly manages the horse farm nearby, and offers Joanna help to make her Christmas dreams come true.

I liked how Jed helps Joanna and how they get to know each other again as they work on the ranch together. Joanna also remembers her mother, and her strong faith.

In Her Old Kentucky Home  Bella surprises Joanna by coming home from Chicago, even though she had initially resisted when Joanna invited her to come.

Bella brings her boyfriend, David, with her, he also has his roots in Kentucky and has been thinking of returning but isn't sure what Bella will think of it.

Home in Kentucky Bella and David are able to spend more time together than in the city, where they were both constantly on the go for their jobs. As going through her father's things, she reads some of his letters and they help her to face her faith and to trust.

I'll Be Home for Christmas  finds Sophie Tucker stranded off road in a snowstorm, and Matt Weatherly, Jed's cousin, comes to her rescue.

Matt and Sophie were childhood friends, and they are able to pick up right where they left off, even though they haven't seen each other in years. Matt has loved Sophie for years, but he didn't want to get in the way of her dreams to become a veterinarian.

I loved seeing Matt and Sophie reconnect after so many years, as they come to understand what led to them losing touch with each other, and realizing what they still have in time for Christmas.

Please Come Home for Christmas Amy is the oldest of the sisters, and she has a son, Timothy, and she is doing the best that she can to keep them floating since the death of her husband. Amy could really use the money from the sale of the farm.

The first person that Amy meets is Dan Wentworth, the man who wants to buy the farm and turn it into smaller high end acreages. Amy feels the responsibility of being the oldest, so she grills Dan with questions about his plans for the property, he happily obliges as it let's him get to know her better and join in their Christmas activities. I also like that he connects with Timothy as well, teaching him how to ride.

Overall, a lovely and highly enjoyable collection about a family that welcomes many new members, and chapters of life into the New Year. I liked how the sisters reconnect and come together again to celebrate what's important.

A Baxter Family Christmas by Karen Kingsbury ~ Review

A Baxter Family ChristmasLucie's Review:

The Baxter gather together for Christmas, bu this year John Baxter has invited Kendra Bryant, who was the recipient of Erin Baxter's heart after the tradgic car accident that took her life, and that of her husband and three of their children.

Landon and Ashley now live in the Baxter House, and are raising Erin's daughter, Amy.

Connor Flannigan is helping his sister Bailey put on a kid's Christmas pageant. While home for Thanksgiving break he meets Bailey's assistant, Maddie, whom he connects with, when he comes home for Christmas, something has changed.

It was great to see the Baxters all together for Christmas, I loved Landon and Ashley and how still very in love they are. Maddie has a younger sister, who is disabled, and though Haley has made remarkable progress, she still feels guilty that there are so many things that she can do and that Haley will never experience.

This is a wonderful book about a family that comes together, and has weathered many a storm in the past. I loved this  heartwarming read, and loved seeing the Baxters all together this Christmas.

Conspiracy of Silence by Ronie Kendig ~ Review

Conspiracy of Silence (Tox Files #1)Lucie's Review:

Archaeologist Tzivia Khalon falls into the earth in the Middle East and discovers several ancient bronze censers. Suddenly strange things begins to happen in the camp, to which Tzivia seems to be immune.

Tox Russel is headed back to D.C. to meet up with his brother, Galen, when he walks into a sketchy situation, that is most likely a trap.

Kasey Cortes is the deception expert for the FBI, as well is the sister-in-law to the president. She and her sister Brooke grew up with the Russel boys, and everyone called her Haven, until she married Navy SEAL, Duarte Cortes, who never made it home from one of his missions.

When Kasey learns the truth about Tox she is pleased, as she had never believed that his team was guilty in the first place, plus she had always admired him, but he only had eyes for Brooke before he joined the military. Then Brooke married Galen, and they had a daughter, before Brooke's tragic death.

Now it's up to Tox and his reassembled team to get to the bottom of the strange happenings in the Saudi Arabia, and to clear their reputation.

There is definitely a lot going on this story, with many characters, that make it hard to follow everything that is going on at first. I liked Dr, Cathey, who is a wise man who knows his Bible well, and helps to connect the past to the present. I also really liked Chiji, who proves to be a great friend to Tox. I kept wondering when Tox would realize who Kasey was, and it was one of my favorite story threads.

This book definitely packs a lot into the short time frame, and there is almost non-stop action throughout. Vivid descriptions bring places like Jerusalem, New Delhi, and Syria to life. I would mention that there is a sort of Indiana Jones type premise to the story, that asks some what ifs, that give the story a more speculative twist. I think one of my favorite things was that Tox wasn't a perfect hero, he had his flaws, but he did his best to live up to his duty. A fast paced read, with a lot going on, great for fans of Ms. Kendig's previous books and new fans as well!

But now after a hip injury, the great aunt agrees that it's time for the children to go and live with Hannah in Aspen Creek, Wisconsin.

Will Hannah and Ethan be able to make amends and perhaps find a second chance at love?

As Ethan and Hannah spend times together with the children they begin to see how good it would be for the children to have both their Uncle and Aunt in their lives.

This is a fast paced read, with a quick, hook and a back story that heaps on the tension from the start. I liked that there was a lot going on and great interaction between Hannah and Ethan, and that they worked together to make Molly and Cole's first Christmas without their parents a good one. A wonderful read from beginning to end.

Mistletoe Daddy by Deb Kastner ~ Review

Mistletoe Daddy
Lucie's Review:

Vivian Grainger returns to Serendipity, TX after a disastrous relationship in the city that leaves her alone and pregnant. She buys the old barber shop with dreams of changing it into a hair salon and spa, all she needs is help fixing it up. Vivian bids on Nick McKenna at the town's bachelor auction, because she's heard that he is handy and good with construction. Vivian bids low because she expects a lot of competition, but no one else bids.

Nick McKenna isn't pleased with the low bid, but he is a man of his word and he helps Vivian with her shop even though he thinks that she is in over her head. He is surprised when she keeps her end of the bargain, sticking it out and working hard, he had always written her off as a flighty social butterfly, but working alongside her he comes to admire her determined spirit.

Will these unlikely friends, make the perfect family?

I liked how Vivian get's to know Nick, and learns that there's more to him than his shaggy hair and beard. He isn't quite the lady's man that she had him labeled as, in fact he doesn't think that anyone would go out with him after the mess that he made of his last relationship. I liked how Vivian and Nick become friends, and learn to trust each other.  Vivian is hardworking, and determined, yet compassionate and outgoing.

Nick is a very protective person, and a man of his word he does everything that he can to help Vivian despite being a busy man himself and having a ranch to run.

Overall, I loved returning to Serendipity, and loved seeing the regulars like Jo, and Dr. Delia. This is a delightful read, filled with surprises, humor, and great character building interaction between the characters. A very enjoyable read!

Amy Grant: Tennessee Christmas CD ~ Review + Giveaway

My Review:

Amy's newest CD, and the first Christmas CD in decades. From beginning to end it is a very cohesive album, with relaxing, lilting melodies that could be called the official soundtrack to a plethora of Holiday activities. Songs about coming together for Christmas, as well as old favorites fill the track list.

I wasn't sure what to expect because this album has been pitched to Country listeners, Christian radio, and pretty much everyone. But despite this, I would say that this album isn't Country or especially religious, but is simply Christmas music for everyone at Christmastime. When I first popped in the CD I instantly imagined opening presents on Christmas day, or baking Christmas cookies, with this album playing in the backround. The songs have a gentle relaxing quality to them, yet still contemporary, all in all it would best be described as a classic Amy Grant album.

Overall, an album perfect for fans of Amy Grant, especially at this time of year. Would makes a great gift for a fan of her music at Christmastime!

The Best Christmas Gift Ever by Melinda Rumbaugh ~ Review

VeggieTales The Best Christmas Gift Ever
My Review:

Christmas is an exciting time, and it's easy to get caught up in the hoopla. But Bob, Larry, and the rest of our favorite vegetables want you to know that the real reason that we celebrate Christmas.

A vibrant read, that flows swiftly in rhyming verses that talk about all the many things that we do at Christmas time, and the most important reason for it all. I loved the brightly colored illustrations that made this book really pop. It was a fun quick read, great for sharing with the next generation of Veggie Tales fans.

I loved the simple but important message of remembering Christ's humble birth, and the hope to a fallen world that He brings. Definitely great for young ones, and would make a great gift.

The Thorn Healer by Pepper D. Basham ~ Review

The Thorn Healer (Penned in Time #3)
My Review:

The scars of war run deep. Nurse Jessica Ross returns to her hometown to find that not only has it become home to a camp of displaced Germans, but that one of them is her grandfather's assistant. Scarred from what she saw and experienced alongside her brother, David, Jessica is bitter against the people that took so much from her. But when her widowed childhood friend dies in child birth, leaving her children Faith and Jude in Jessica's care, she wonders if she will be able to step up to the demands of motherhood.

August Reinhold has fallen in love with Jessica Ross through the letters that she has faithfully sent home to her grandparents. He admires her strength and compassion. He knows that despite her coldness towards him and his German heritage, she is the still the same woman from the letters on the inside, and he is determined to win her heart.

The third book the series, but don't let that stop you, it stands well on its own. I liked that it told the story of coming home from the front from a woman's perspective, as Jessica deals with coming home and finding that home is not how she left it. I loved seeing her grow in her faith, and as person in love and grace as she becomes a mother to Jude and Faith.

People are not all as they seem, and there is a trouble maker framing the displaced Germans, making the townsfolk uneasy that a plot may be afoot. And Jessica finds two men vying for her attentions.

I also loved August's sister, Anna and her daughter Sylvie. Anna is a strong woman, who despite everything is full of hope, and strong sensibility. Cliff is Jessica's cousin, who is like a brother to her. He is kind, and open-hearted.

I liked August's determination and faith, he is an honorable man to the core of his being and he is passionate about what he sets his mind to. He quickly befriends Jessica's new children, but time is quickly running as his time at the camp is drawing to an end.

A well written and characterized read. I loved Jessica and her journey of faith and forgiveness, as she finds herself in a very different position from the one she was in a few months ago, facing the remnants of the battles fought over seas at home. She is a strong woman, who doesn't always like change but finds ways to adjust. There is mystery and suspense as she and August try to prove who is behind the attacks against the Germans. I also really liked the story between Cliff and Anna, as well as getting to see Catherine and David and their young daughter again. A fast paced and engaging romance, filled with tension and faith.

But soon, his past becomes exposed. Cassie’s left to wonder—did she make the same mistake Mom did by falling for the bad boy?

Then, Grandma’s control pushes her over the edge. Cassie must choose between remaining in the chains of yesterday, or delving into her own freedom by completing the melody her mom left behind.

My Review:

Cassie Gilbert longs for freedom, and she finds a refuge in words, poetry and lyrics to songs. She lives a sheltered life with her grandparents, attending a small private Christian school where her grandmother is also the principal. Cassie's life is tightly managed by her grandmother, who only allows her to hang out with her best friend, Shelby, and her cousin, Dakota, and doesn't want her to make the mistakes that her mother did.

When teen singer/songwriter James Russo comes to their small school, Cassie finds herself paired with him for an English assignment, to write a song using the words of Emily Dickinson. Though they are different, James and Cassie find in each other kindred spirits, both hurting from the pain of their pasts.

James has never met anyone like Cassie, he is amazed by her ability to capture emotions infused with hope. He has been struggling to put together his first album, and whether or not he should pursue a music career or be practical an go to school and get a job. Cassie has him rethinking everything, will they be able to help each other find hope?

Told from alternating perspectives this book follows the unlikely friendship between Cassie and James. I liked both of them immediately, and it was easy to see that while most people wouldn't put them together, they were both on the similar journeys of the heart, and were true friends there when the other needed them the most.

Cassie struggles to love her grandmother, who holds her to strict rules and curfews, and she often wonders if she is a burden to her grandparents. I liked the relationship that Cassie shared with her grandfather, whom she called "Dad," he is soft where her grandmother is hard and encourages Cassie to spread her wings and to know the truth. Cassie doesn't wear her feelings on her sleeve, but writes them down with her treasured typewriter, expressing them through prose and lyrics.

James found fame on a singing competition reality show, but he is still dealing with the demons of his past. I liked how he reaches out to Cassie and makes an effort to really get to know her, he is understanding and is amazed to find someone who understands him in return. James is a likable young man on the inside and out, he knows that he has made mistakes, but he tries to do better.

Overall, a heartfelt read, engaging with magnetic characters that had me glued to the page. Well written in a riveting style that drew me to Cassie and James, I enjoyed every moment of this book. Full of hope, this is a heartfelt read that explores the hurts and pain of humanity, as well as the hope that comes from beyond. Highly recommend.

The Berenstain Bears Love One Another by Mike Berenstain ~ Review

29434866

My Review:

Brother, Sister, and Honey are helping Mama Bear make berry muffins. When they ask if they can eat them Mama tells them that the muffins aren't for them, but for a new mother, and that there are many ways to show our love for one another.

A sturdy board book, about what it is to love one another, with the Bear family. I think one of my favorite thing about this book, is that it showed that small acts of loving kindness can go a long way in showing hoe much you care, it doesn't have to be huge showy acts.

A classic story that is great for sharing with children, about being helpful and showing love to each other. Makes a great gift to share with the young ones in your life.

Reunited at Christmas by Belle Calhoune ~ Review

Reunited at Christmas (Alaskan Grooms, #4)
Lucie's Review:

Ruby Prescott comes to Love, Alaska looking for answers. She lost her memory in an accident 2 years ago, she's been living in Colorado for the past couple of years, but nobody there knew her before the injury.

The first person that Ruby sees in Love is the sheriff, who also happens to be her brother-in-law. He immediately calls his brother, Dr. Liam Prescott, who rushes over. Ruby learns that her family thought that she had died in the avalanche that took her memory during a search and rescue mission in Colorado.

After he get's over his shock, Liam asks Ruby to stay and get to know their son, Aidan, who was a toddler when she disappeared. Will they be able to be a family again?

I love how Liam is willing to go the distance and to do what he can to make Ruby feel at home, and doesn't pressure her to remember him. He gives her space, but is always there and is happy to see her reconnecting with their son. Liam is a good doctor, and genuinely cares for his patients, and famil y is very important to him.

Ruby is a strong, brave and compassionate woman, even if she doesn't always see herself that way. I liked how the town worked to make her feel welcome, even though she didn't remember them, they didn't make her feel bad about it.

This is a wonderful read set in the beautiful town of Love, Alaska. I loved the characters, especially Liam and Aiden, and how they welcome Ruby back into their lives with open arms. This is a beautiful story of second chances at love in time for Christmas.

Newton and Polly by Jody Hedlund ~ Review

Newton and Polly: A Novel of Amazing GraceMy Review:

John Newton is smitten when he hears the angelic voice of Polly Catlett caroling with her cousin Susanna. He follows her home and discovers that he is her cousin, despite having a job lined up on a ship destined for Jamaica, he lingers with the Catletts, each day making it harder to leave Polly behind him. John is reckless and godless, with very little motivation to work and make something of himself--constantly dismissing opportunities for career advancement.

But when John finds himself impressed into service upon a Navy vessel, he begins an arduous journey that will change his life forever.

A inspiring and passionate tale of a prodigal's flight from God, his redemption, and the woman who loved him. Before reading this book I'd never really heard much about Polly Catlett, besides the fact that John Newton was a married man and that she was his wife. Oh, how little I knew! I was riveted by this passionate tale of redemption and enduring love, and Amazing Grace.

Polly is a beautiful young woman inside and out, with a kind heart, and a bent for following rules to the letter. When impulsive and reckless John comes into her life, she is drawn to him, and finds him unlike anyone she has ever known before. When her father urges her to give John up, do to his lacking character, she struggles to obey her father, but finds that John is a man hard to forget.

John Newton is irresponsible and careless, letting important deadlines pass without more than passing acknowledgement. He has a chip on his shoulder, and a bent for undermining authority. He challenges those around him with his contemptible attitude and godless ways.

I liked that this book didn't shy away from the gritty truth about the things that John was involved in, and I thought that Ms. Hedlund captured his youthful, disregard for authority and responsibility well. I loved seeing how in hindsight, so many of the experiences in his life set the stage for future blessings.

Overall, a riveting, gripping read that took my heart on a roller coaster of emotions. A tumultuous and dramatic tale of redemption and God's boundless grace. Highly recommend!

The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill by Julie Klassen ~ Review

The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill (Tales from Ivy Hill, #1)
Lucie's Review: This book brings to life a small village in England, full of colorful characters whose lives intersect and intertwine.

Upon the death of her husband, Jane becomes the owner of the local inn. When she realizes how many people depend on the inn, she becomes determined to do what she can to keep it open.

Jane's friend, Mercy, runs a school for girls alongside her aunt, and she encourages Jane to save the inn herself instead of selling it. She invites Jane to the Ladies Tea and Knitting Society, which is a meeting of all the local business women.

This book has many characters, and many storylines  to follow about the women in the village, and it reminded me a lot of Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell. This book tells the story of a historical English village through the eyes of the women who live there. It takes a while to figure out who everyone is at first, but is lush with detail description and great dialog.

I loved the relationship between Jane and Thora, who is Jane's mother-in-law, and how it grows and changes over the course of the book. Thora returns from living with her sister, to find the inn in trouble, due in part to the fact that Talbot has left.

Talbot was the manager of the inn, but he left when he inherited his family's farm. But he is more than happy to lend a hand t help them out, especially since he has admired Thora since the death of her husband.

James Drake becomes Jane's rival, he stays at the inn and offers advice on how to improve the inn before acquiring her childhood home and opening a rival inn. Suddenly the two inns are competing for the Royal Mail route.

Gabriel Locke has more to him than what meets the eye, he is works with the horses that stay at the inn. but proves to be a good friend helping Jane where he can, as does Sir Timothy, Jane's childhood friend.

I loved the real sense of community that I got from reading this book, and the wonderful women and men that make up this town. Decidedly different in tone than previous books by this author that I had enjoyed, and at first I was definitely unsure, but by the end I realized that I had thoroughly enjoyed this read.

Cowboy Creek Christmas by Cheryl St. John and Sherri Shackleford ~ Review

Cowboy Creek Christmas: Mistletoe Reunion\Mistletoe Bride

Lucie's Review:

Mistletoe Reunion Marlys Boyd has worked hard to put herself through medical school, yet she struggles to find patients at her Philadelphia practice, so she moves home to Cowboy Creek and places an ad in the paper.

Sam Mason was a reporter in Philadelphia before serving in the War Between the States, he wrote a book about his experiences. But he came back to Cowboy Creek for a new start, and bought the local paper.

I like the reunion between Marlys and Sam as they become acquainted again. Marlys always makes a point of not ignoring August, Sam's 8 year old son, and encouraging his love of learning.

Marlys has a love of learning, and is open to finding new solutions, that serve her well as a Doctor.

Mistletoe Bride Colton Werner reluctantly agrees to help interpret for the midwife, with one of her patients that speaks German. He remembers enough to find out that her name is Beatrix Haas, and she came to town to marry the sheriff, who has been recently deceased. The labor is difficult and Beatrix fears for the fate of her child, so Colton volunteers to marry Beatrix in name only to care for her child, that he names Joseph after his deceased twin brother. But when she recovers, Colton is faced with an interesting dilemma, married and the father of a newborn.

Beatrix wants to be a good wife to Colton, she tries to get close to him, and is thrifty with his money. But Colton seems to have a wall around his heart.

I like how the town welcomes Beatrix and include her in their activities.

Colton does his best to show Beatrix that she is safe and that he would never hurt her or Joseph.

Two fantastic stories of love and family at Christmas time in Cowboy Creek.

Wild Montana Skies by Susan May Warren ~ Review

Wild Montana Skies (Montana Rescue, #1)
Lucie's Review:

Kacey Fairing flies helicopters in rescue missions for the military, but her plane was shot down in Afghanistan and now she's home for the Summer hoping to leave the nightmares of war behind. She get's a job flying a rescue helicopter for PEAK Rescue pilot Chet King who has been injured and needs an interim replacement. But what she doesn't know is that her old flame, Country Music start Ben King is home to care for his father.

Ben King is a Country singer who got his start singing the songs that he wrote for Kacey back in highschool, going on to become part of a duo. But now his partner, Hollie has gone solo, and he has to reconfigure his career.

Will Kacey and Ben find a new beginning?

I liked the interaction between Kacey and Ben, they both acknowledge that they made mistakes in that past and want to move forward. Ben is surprised to learn about Kacey's 13 year old daughter, Audrey, who is a big fan of his previous Country duo. He wants to get to know Audrey, and wants to makes sure that letting her know him as her father is the right thing. Kacey and Ben make a good team, and they work hard to put together the clues to find the missing niece of Ian Shaw, Esme, who disappeared 3 years ago.

I loved Chet, he is a man of faith, who gives good advice and isn't above a little matchmaking. He is an impatient patient, but his heart is right on track.

This is a riveting, heartwarming read, with colorful characters, and lively dialog. I loved the drama and suspense, entwined with the strong vein of redemption that runs through the story. A fantastic read from beginning to end and I can't wait to read the next in the series.

Shielding His Christmas Witness by Laura Scott ~ Review

Shielding His Christmas Witness (Callahan Confidential #1)
Lucie's Review:

The safe house that Kari Danville has been staying at becomes compromised, sending her running for her life. Every person in uniform is a suspect, so FBI agent Marc Callahan must go off the grid to keep Kari safe.

Marc and Kari don't know where to turn or who to trust, so he called up his brothers, Mike, Mitch, and Miles who do what they can for Kari without asking questions. I liked how dedicated to his job that Marc is, he is good at what he does, though he can be very serious and rarely smiles. He comes to admire Kari for everything that she has been through, and she helps him come to terms with his past.

Kari is a brave, resourceful, quick-thinking woman, new to her faith, and pregnant with her ex-fiance's child.  I admired her faith, though new, was strong. She is in danger, because she was a key witness to a crime.

The interaction between Kari and Marc was well done, and in the midst of all the uncertainty they come to trust and depend upon each other. For Marc being with Kari has showed him how taxing his job has been, and that he wants to start really living again.

A highly engaging read, filled with action, that kept me guessing who was behind the threats until the very end. Great dialog with fantastic characters, and I loved getting to meet Marc's brothers. A fantastic read that I didn't want to put down!

A Convenient Christmas Wedding by Regina Scott ~ Review

A Convenient Christmas Wedding (Frontier Bachelors #5)
Lucie's Review:

Nora Underhill was raised by her brother, Charles, and his wife, Meredith, who don't let a moment go by that they don't remind her of that fact, and how much she owes them for taking her in. Nora finally escapes her manipulative brother by joining Asa Mercer's bride ship to Seattle to marry Simon Wallin.

Nora proposes to Simon, in exchange for his name, and protection, she will continue to work in Seattle, and he can return to Wallins Landing, claiming more land as a married man. But when Charles and Meredith arrive and insist that Nora stay with them, Nora changes her plans and moves to
Wallins Landing, which puts Simon in a bind as he has yet to tell his family about his marriage.

Simon is a good hardworking man, I loved how his family welcomed Nora into their lives. Simon takes his duty seriously, and is very detail oriented, which often leads him to focus on problems instead of finding solutions right away.

Nora is my favorite character, industrious, tender-hearted, and always ready to lend a hand. Her faith is strong and shes God's glory in all of creation.

I really liked the dialog between Nora and Simon, they always treat each other with respect and come to recognize the other's strengths, and that they are better together.

I loved the strong themes of family and Christmas traditions throughout this story, Simon's family si very supportive of his marriage, and I loved the dialog and humorous situations. This was a fast-paced and engaging read that I didn't want to put down. Highly enjoyable read!

Amish Christmas Blessings by Marta Perry and Jo Ann Brown ~ Review

Amish Christmas Blessings: The Midwife's Christmas Surprise\A Christmas to RememberLucie's Review:

The Midwife's Christmas Surprise
Anna Zook has learned a lot from Elizabeth Miller about being a midwife, and now they share a clinic, but Anna worries that the ladies of the community will never take her seriously as a midwife.

Elizabeth tries to encourage her, and does what she can to help her confidence. When Elizabeth's son Benjamin comes home after three years away, she welcomes him warmly and tries to play matchmaker by finding excuses for him to spend time with Anna.

Ben's return is not without plenty of challenges, he must overcome the resentment that same with his leaving in the first place. He works hard to prove that he has changed and that he's in it for the long haul. I liked his and Anna's dialog as they come to terms with what happened in the past and become reacquainted. Ben has a way of knowing just when Anna needs a hand, and he shows up just in time.

Overall, a sweet tale of Christmastime second chances at love, and mending family ties. I liked how Ben makes an intention choice to prove himself to everyone back home, and to heal old wounds.

A Christmas to Remember
When Amos Stoltzfus finds a young girl named Polly trying to steal bread from his shop, he gives it to her along with some peanut butter, and follows her home. He discovers that her companion, Linda, is not well, so he offers a hand, taking them to stay with his mother.

Linda is recovering from a head injury and memory loss, and finds it easy to be discouraged. Amos helps to cheer her up, but wonders about the wisdom of falling for a woman who doesn't even know herself what kind of woman she is.

I liked Linda, and her faith, she knows that God will reveal His will in His own time. And even though she doesn't remember everything, there are things that shine though, showing her genuine character.

I liked Amos, he is a kind man, who takes action when he sees a need.

Overall, a heartwarming love story of family and making memories at Christmastime.

A Spy's Devotion by Melanie Dickerson ~ Review

A Spy's Devotion (The Regency Spies of London, #1)
My Review:

Julia Grey has few prospects, as the orphaned poor relation who is living with her uncle and aunt she has little to offer as a dowry. Julia hopes to make a good match despite her financial shortcomings, so that she can avoid becoming a governess like her friend Sarah Peck. Julia attends the local parties as a companion to her flighty cousin Phoebe, who is titled, moneyed, and smitten with the dashing Nicholas Langdon.

Nicholas Langdon is on a mission for king and country, tasked with flushing out those trading confidential information with the French, and endangering the English crown. He has reason to believe that Mr. Wilhern, Julia’s uncle, is one of the traitors, all Nicholas needs is the final piece of evidence that will confirm his suspicions.

Melanie Dickerson’s signature themes of adventure, faith, honor, and abiding love, run strong in her regency fiction debut, but she doesn’t leave her fairy tale roots behind either. A compelling and riveting read the entire way through, filled with hope, faith, and love.

I felt for Julia and her less than ideal situation, though more fortunate than most, she struggled to reconcile herself to her lot in life, trying to follow the laws of society to the letter. Julia is an exemplary friend to her cousin, Phoebe, and tries to guide and shield her as best she can, offering support and sound advice. I admired Julia’s determination and bravery to do what was right in the face of an uncertain future, as well as her compassionate spirit.

Nicholas Langdon is a admirable man, strong, honor and duty bound, he is also intentional and he is very aware of his actions. He is kind and compassionate, genuinely charming, and impossible not to admire for his faith and sense of duty.

Overall, a riveting read that blended a well curated atmosphere with an Austen-esque romance, and a thrilling suspenseful plot. Julia matures quite a bit over the course of the story, coming to terms with her situation, and taking a stand for what is right despite the consequences A fantastic read, that I would highly recommend to fans of regency fiction and/or fans of Ms. Dickerson.
