A gorgeous Appalachian re-telling of Pride and Prejudice set in a coal mining town.
Though familiar, this re-telling has the story feeling brand new. Lizbeth Bennet and her sisters know change is coming to the town with the upcoming sale of the mine. One the perspective buyers is more wealthy than them all, with plans for change, but what will it mean for their family's farm?
I liked how this novel delves more into the mind of William Drake, he is good friend to Brydolf, and a tad on the socially awkward side at times, but through it all he has big picture vision. The Bennets are a close knit family, and I liked how the sisterly relationships are highlighted, as well as their relationship with their parents.
Overall, one of the best Pride and Prejudice re-tellings I have ever read, with rich characterization, solid faith, lovely prose that tells the story in a way that truly makes use of the Appalachian Virginia setting. I love that it stays true to the heart of the original story, while making choices that gives it breath of its own. Highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
