Advent Unhurried by Micha Boyett // Review

My Review:

I'll be honest this one just wasn't for me. I was hoping for a rich devotional to spark my awe and sense of wonder, but instead I felt that it got bogged down in the longer chapters and meditating on what ifs and imaginings rather than the solid truths of the miracle of the coming of Jesus into the world.

Throughout the book she encourages readers to slow down and embrace an attitude of unhurriedness, with poetry, and her own personal reflections, as well as thoughts on the cultural impacts and implications for Mary in fictionalized essays. And while I can appreciate lingering on the calmness and quiet of the unobtrusive way Jesus entered the world, I like my advent books to get me excited and hyped up about Christmas in a culture that treats it like another day, and this book kinda downplayed the most important parts of Christmas.

In the end this book just wasn't for me, for multiple reasons. Some of the days were longwinded readings, others were short poems, thoughts, Scriptures, or activties. And Jesus was was presented as someone who "claimed" to be the Son of Man, and while Christian language was used throughout the interpretations were open ended and less specific. Perhaps a more fitting book for a more secular minded reader, but this just isn't something I can recommend.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
