Wish Book Christmas by Lynn Austin // Review

My Review:

The heartwarming Christmastime sequel to Lynn Austin's If I Were You. 

Eve and Audrey are excited to celebrate Christmas together with their boys and newfound family, while Bobby and Harry are counting down the days until Christmas, circling the toys that they want from the 1951 Sears Christmas Wish Book. Eve and Audrey become concerned that their sons are missing the point of Christmas, and endeavor to teach them the true meaning of Christmas while learning lessons of their own along the way. 

A heartwarming faith filled novella that continues the story of Eve and Audrey, as well as their two sons. I loved how we got to know Bobby and Harry better in this story, and how their personalities shine as they await Christmas in childish exuberance. They made me chuckle at their all too relatable antics. It was wonderful to see Audrey, Eve and the boy surrounded by so many people that loved them, as well as making new friends along the way. Tom is a wonderful man, with a wonderful family, and I loved the addition of Mr. Hamilton. 

Overall, the perfect sequel to If I Were You, I enjoyed the lighter more heartwarming tone of this story, that still bears strong themes of faith and the true meaning of Christmas. Highly recommend!

An Amish Baby for Christmas by Vanetta Chapman // Review

Lucie's Review: 

Widowed and pregnant Abigail Yutzy is struggling to keep the farm running, so the bishop sends property manager Thomas Albrecht to help her. 

Thomas is used to working with widows, helping them tie up the loose ends of a farm after the loss of a loved one, but he is shocked to find that Abigail is much younger than his usual clients and pregnant. Thomas is a kind and considerate man, he wants to do everything he can to help her, convincing her to begrudgingly accept his help. He is focused and organized, with the know-how to get the job done. 

I loved how the community came to help Abigail, even though she struggled to accept their assistance. Mammi is a wonderful friend to Abigail, sitting with her and giving words of wisdom. 

A wholesome Amish romance, with excellent characters, well paced plotting, strong faith and a worthy hero.

Meet Me Under the Kissing Bough by Josi S. Kilpack, Anneka R. Walker, Sarah L. McConkie // Review

Meet Me Under the Kissing Bough by Josi S. Kilpack

Deborah has struggled to celebrate Christmas since the death of her husband. Ready to turn over a new leaf, she hosts her first holiday party since her husband's death and finds herself caught between two very different men. 

I very much admired Deborah for taking on the daunting task of hosting a 12 day long Christmas celebration, and I loved learning more about how people of that time and station spent their holiday. This story has a well developed plot and characters that you can cheer for throughout, I liked the relationship building. One of my favorite stories of this collection. 

Healing Hearts for the Holidays by Anneka R. Walker

A bundle of old love letters help two families mend the rift between them, and gives new love chance. 

Forbidden to socialize with the family next door Julia Hunt finds a friend in Esmond, despite it being forbidden. A sweet story of star-crossed lovers, and complicated family histories, all coming together for Christmas. 

A Christmas Correspondence by Sarah L. McConkie

Lord John Charleston finds himself saddled with difficult guest over Christmastime. Can the festive season soften the bitterest of hearts? A Christmas Carol re-telling that also has tinges of The Taming of the Shrew. 

A  regency era re-imagining of a classic tale, a quick read with intriguing characters, though Lady Caroline was difficult to like for much of the book. John is very patient and I like how he sees the best in Caroline. 

Overall a wonderful collection of novellas just in time for Christmas.

The Mistletoe Countess by Pepper Basham // Review

My Review:

An utterly delightful read from beginning to end, I couldn't help but love Grace's wild imagination, infectious enthusiasm, and never give up determination. 

Grace never thought that she would find herself in an arranged marriage, but when she bravely takes her sister's place as the bride of Lord Frederick Percy she is determined to make the best of the situation. All is not as it appears and she will need her quick wits and exuberant charm to not only win Percy's heart, but to solve a murder.

An enchanting romance, with excellent characters,  riveting dialogue, and crackling chemistry. I loved how in awe Percy is of Grace, and how he is reminded by his friends and staff  who are supportive of their relationship of what a treasure she is. I loved that even though Percy has made his mistake he still has many faithful friends in his corner. Grace is such a breath of fresh air to his estate, she isn't afraid to be upfront and open about her faith, while living every minute to the fullest, with a relatable love of novel adventures. 

Overall, this was such a fun read. I couldn't help but fall in love with the characters from Grace and Percy to the staff of Havensbrook Hall. Grace is infectiously delightful, and without guile. A swoonworthy Christmas romance, full of adventure, sure to bring a smile to your face.

First Christmas on Huckleberry Hill by Jennifer Beckstrand // Review

My Review: 

An enchanting prequel that tells the love story of matchmaking grandparents Anna and Felty Helmuth in 1952. 

Raised by her widowed father Anna Yoder can't cook or sew like the other young women in her community, though she does her best, but her tender heart has her reaching out to newly returned Felty who is something of an outcast due to his service in the Korean War. A heartwarming and humorous read that tells the story of Huckleberry Hill's favorite couple.

A delightful Christmastime romance that brought a smile to my face. I loved how Anna knows she isn't like the other girls, but she always does her best and isn't afraid to blaze her own trail, yet she is always considerate of others. I like that Felty stands up for Anna and has her back, he has learned to stand his ground for what he believes. 

Overall this was such a fun read, with endearing characters. I admired Felty for being courageous and choosing to do the hard things, following the call. The side characters were well written, I especially liked Anna's brothers and her father. A heartwarming Christmas read great for fans of the series or new fans alike. Highly enjoyable!

Christmas Vendetta by Valerie Hansen // Review

Lucie's Review: 

A deadly attacker brings two high school sweethearts back together for a second chance while they fight for their lives.

After a terrifying attack, no one will believe that a vengeful man from Sandy Lynn's past is after her, except for Clay Danforth, her former high school flame. 

Clay is courageous, and I admired that he was willing to do whatever it takes to keep Sandy safe, despite the high personal risk on his end. He is a man of his word and protective of Sandy. This is a fast paced read with high stakes and no one to turn to. I liked that Clay and Sandy were able to reconnect through all of this drama and danger, finding that they shared a faith and a lingering connection. 

A fast paced read, with attacks coming from all sides it is a twisting read that keeps you on your toes. Actin packed read that keeps you guessing with characters that you can cheer for all the way through!

An exhilarating high stakes adventure, mixed with romance in this inspiring WWII novel about the men and women who fought from the home front. 

Shirley Davenport wants more than what her small town can offer. She joins the SPARs a division of the Coast Guard with her friend Joan, but when a mission sends her home undercover and in disgrace she must find the courage to stand tall and fight for her country, and find out who her friends are. 

I was intrigued from the very beginning, as this was the first time I'd ever read about book about a woman serving in in the SPARs. A well researched read that blends fact with fiction in a suspensefully engrossing read. Shirley is an excellent heroine, brave for not just the physical risks that took, but also for the scorn and shame she had to bear coming back to her hometown. Even though Leo and Shirley didn't get to spend a ton of time together due to their duties, I thought that their relationship felt authentic and realistic. One of my favorite things was Shirley's friendship with Alma and how they work together to fulfill their mission. 

Overall, an exciting WWII novel that highlights the brave men and women who fought for their country from the home front. Suspenseful, with courageous heroines, faith, and friendship, I enjoyed this book so much, easily a book that I would heartily recommend!

The idea for Saving Mrs. Roosevelt literally came overnight. I had just finished writing a contemporary romance set in Maine, centered around a harbor town where lobstering is prevalent. My agent called me and told me about the Heroines of WWII series and asked if I’d be interested in writing a WWII novel. If so, I needed to come up with a story and proposal fast because spots were limited and filling quickly. My mind was so consumed with research of the lobster industry that I felt I couldn’t clear my brain fast enough to come up with another story on such short notice. That’s when I started wondering how I could take the knowledge I already had and make it work for a WWII novel. I googled Maine during WWII, came across an article that mentioned the SPARs, and the idea for Saving Mrs. Roosevelt was born.

I don’t want to give too much away, but the Nancy Drew deep inside me figured out a unique way to merge lobstering with espionage.

Though the plot is purely fiction, there are some characters and events that are historically accurate that were fun to include as well. I love Maine, but I’m Hoosier born and raised, and in my SPAR research, I discovered that Dorothy C. Stratton–the woman the Coast Guard asked to direct the SPARs–was the Dean of Women at Purdue University in Indiana. She was a woman of true character, grace, and strength. I knew right away she needed a cameo in my story.

Within twenty-four hours of receiving my agent’s call, I had plotted the entire story and sent a proposal. Weeks went by, and as fall ushered in its beautiful colors, my husband surprised me with a trip to Monhegan Island, Maine. We walked the trails, ate amazing seafood, and took in the gorgeous view. While on the island, my agent called again, this time to let me know that Barbour had contracted Saving Mrs. Roosevelt. What a special moment it was to be standing on the very shoreline where the book is set when I received the good news.

Since the book is set in Maine where the heroine works on a lobster boat with her father, I wanted to share my favorite recipe for Maine blueberry pie.

 

Maine Blueberry Pie

Ingredients:

2 Pie crusts

1 quart of fresh Maine blueberries

1 ½ tbsp lemon juice

Freshly grated nutmeg

¼ c light brown sugar

¼ c sugar

¼ c flour

2 tbsp tapioca for thickening (if the berries are juicy)

 

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Place the berries into a large bowl, add lemon juice, and toss. Add the remaining ingredients and toss until the berries are well coated with the flour and sugars mixture. Line the pie plate with one crust. Put the berries into the pie plate and top with a solid or lattice-top crust. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the berries are bubbly and the crust is golden brown.

Her Christmas Dilemma by Brenda Minton // Review

Lucie's Review: 

Clara Fisher returns to her hometown for a fresh start, taking a job working for Tucker Church who is raising his teenage niece on top of  ranching and running a campground. Could this be the safe haven that she needs?

A poignant and emotional read, with wonderful characters with authentic chemistry. I liked how Clara is able to help Shay with what she is going through, and how she relies on her faith. Tucker is strong and supportive of Clara every step of the way. I admired his faith and how open and honest he is. Clara has a lot of secrets and hurt, she does her best to help Tucker even though she isn't a skilled cook. 

Overall, this was a heart-gripping read, perfect for Christmas with a couple that I cheered for all the way through. Excellent interaction and chemistry, I couldn't put down this book. Highly recommend.

Hiding His Holiday Witness by Laura Scott // Review

Lucie's Review:

US Marshal Slade Brooks responds to a frantic call from a woman in witness protection, to find her shaken up and having lost her memory. He and Robyn set off to stay one step ahead of the bad guys while trying to unlock her memories so that she will be able to testify against the bad guys. 

A fast paced adventure full of danger and suspense. Robyn witnessed a crime and has been through a lot, I admired her for holding to her faith and bravely standing for the truth. Slade is dedicated to his job, he likes Robyn but knows that with her in witness protection it can't go anywhere. 

Overall, a well written suspense with a good plot and pacing, I liked that there were moments that slowed down enough for them to get to know each other. And I think that the risks taken made sense with the plot. I liked their  shared faith and Robyn's courage. A solid inspirational suspense, with excellent plot and characters!

 Review:

A western romance of misunderstanding. 

A promising premise, with interesting characters. I thought it was a fun read, and it was interesting to see how Annie and Josh would get to know each other through their multiple misunderstandings. Annie has a great friend who stands up for her, and I liked the addition of an adorable little boy who befriends Josh's dog. 

I think that the plot was promising, and definitely wanted to know what would happen next. Though I felt  that there were many times when Josh really let Annie down and left her in a vulnerable position, instead of protecting her, and that made it hard for me to like them together--or more specifically Josh. 

Overall, this was one was a mixed bag for me, because there were things that I liked and wanted to like more of, but at the same time there were elements that just didn't work for me. I really appreciated the strong faith journeys, which was one of the shining spots of this novel. I think that this would be great for people who really enjoyed the first book in the series, and like western romances.

I’ve always been fond of reading mail-order bride books. Not that I would have ever had the courage to do something so brave. 🙂 But it’s fun writing and reading them. I also love perusing historical journal entries of women who decided to marry a complete stranger. Sometimes it worked out great, other times, not so much. In most cases, the heroine traveled across country to arrive in the west to meet her potential groom. Often they had no idea what each other looked like before they met for the first time. Not that looks matter.

At times the woman was given the opportunity to get to know the fella for a while before they actually married. Other times, they tied the knot as soon as the potential wife arrived at their destination. Some women fled desperate situations in the east, hoping for a better outcome only to find themselves embroiled in another bad position. All of the different scenarios I’ve read about helped to prime the pump for Protecting Annie.

 

In book one of my Burrton Springs Brides series, Taming Julia, I had the heroine’s brother, Josh set Jules (Julia) up as a mail-order bride. As I was writing that story, I knew it would be fun to change things up in book two and have Jules return the favor by ordering a mail-order bride for Josh. That’s the premise for this new story. Josh isn’t exactly thrilled to learn of his sister’s interference in his life and decision to remain single.

 

I hope you’ll enjoy the story of two unlikely people who are thrown together.

Cross-Country Christmas by Laurie Lewis // Review

Lucie's Review:

CC Cippolini takes a  job delivering a luxury car across the country, but an accident sends her crashing into rancher Reese Brockbank's life just in time for Christmas. 

Reese has been through a lot, and understandably isn't crazy about celebrating Christmas. I like that he is very open and honest, showing her how he lives his life and letting CC see him as he is. This was a sweet romance, with both the main characters having a lot in their pasts. This was a well paced read, and I really liked Reese, he was a solid hero. But CC was a little harder to love with how she handled things, which made things frustrating for a while. Though I loved her enthusiasm for Christmas and how she helps him open up. 

Overall, this was a quick read set in a picturesque small town, I loved that Reese had such supportive friends and family. A fun Christmas romance, with an handsome cowboy hero.

Entwined by Jody Hedlund // Review

Review:

 A new spin on the legend of Excalibur, filled with adventure and romance. 

Lis grew up believing herself to the be the daughter of a farmer and his wife, but now with the kingdom in turmoil she must reclaim her birthright. Ansgar is uneasy with the changes he sees in King Ulrik's health and cannot abide standing by watching him waste away, Rasmus's scheming turns Ansgar's men against him. A thrilling adventure of daring and romance. 

I was thrilled to be able to pick this book up so soon after reading Enamored, and I enjoyed getting to know a little more about the knights. Lis is natural leader, humble yet she has a strong sense of compassion and justice. Ansgar is a knight of noble character, he takes his vows seriously. He and Lis make a great team. 

I liked how this story showed a different side of what was going on than the previous book, and I hope to see more of the sisters together in the future. I'm excited to see where the series will go and get to know the other knights better.
