Forgotten Memories by Laura Scott ~ Review

Forgotten Memories (SWAT: Top Cops #4)
Lucie's Review:

Dr. Gabriella Fielding has worked hard to become an ER doctor, and she does her best to give each of her patients the best care possible. And often that means leaving the hospital long after others have gone. One night she is grabbed by two men, and shoved into a strange vehicle. One of them tells her that she needs to give Creighton what he wants, but she doesn't even know anyone named Creighton!

With the help of a newfound friend, Shane, will she be able to get to the bottom of this baffling mystery?

Shane is a good man and is honorable to the very core of his being, he is determined to help to keep Gabi safe, and he sleeps outside her door every night to prove it.

I loved the characters, and how well they worked together and their dialogue was well done and amazing.

There's an engaging storyline, and I like Shane is willing to share his faith with Gabi, and how she clings to her newfound faith in the face of trial.

Overall, a fantastic books that jumps right into the action, with great tension and plenty going on. And the main characters totally captured my heart!

Just One Summer: A Romance Novella Collection by Nicole Deese, Tammy L. Gray, Amy Matayo, and Jenny B. Jones ~ Review

Just One Summer: A Romance Novella Collection
My Review:

Four best friends, Joss, Darby, Sydney, and Avery, have been best friends for years, and they have a long standing tradition of spending their summers together at the lake. For the first time in years they are spending their summers separately, follow each of the girls as they find love and themselves during Just One Summer.

Joss learns to let go, and embrace the uncertain future, while spending her last summer at her family's cabin, and spends time with Drew Culver, as they help each other cope with the big changes in their lives.

Sydney's mom is getting married yet again, and because of the wedding Sydney finds herself spending her summer not at the lake with her friends, but on paradise with two brothers, struggling to find common ground in light of their loss.

Darby is an aspiring actress, down on hr luck, and working at a tattoo parlor, despite her fear of needles. Will she be able to face her fears, as she learns that there is more to her tattooed and talented boss than there appears to be.

Avery is supposed to be spending her summer at a French restaurant, cooking culinary masterpieces, but instead she finds herself as the head cook at a dude ranch owned by her estranged grandfather, where the best received food is simple, homestyle cooking. Oh, and not to mention a handsome cowboy...

A great summer read, I zoomed through these lovely stories in a matter of days, each of the stories was unique and had positive themes of ending conflicts and accepting the ever challenging roller coaster that is growing up, as well as finding love in unexpected places.

I loved each of the stories and it is hard to pick a favorite. But I think my favorites had to be Joss's story and Avery's. I liked the natural "meet cute" and interaction between Joss and Drew. And in Avery's story I loved Jenny B. Jones's trademark sass, as well as the western setting, and cute cowboy!

I really liked Lennon, the relaxed man of many talents, and how he reaches out to Darby and helps her face her fears and gain confidence. And in Sydney's story, I just loved the overall dynamic, with the brothers, and the island paradise feel.

Overall, a fantastic collection, full of friendship, romance, and humor that is perfect for a summer vacation, or when you just need a break.

The One: An Amazing Love Story Starts with You by Ryan and Amanda Leak, with Jodi Lipper ~ Review

The One: An Amazing Love Story Starts with You

My Review:

Ryan and Amanda Leak became Youtube sensations when their wedding video was released that chronicled their special day, when they did what very few couples do, got engaged and married on the same day.

In this book they tell of the struggles they faced in the five years leading up to that big day and how it all came to be, from each of their different points of view. I really enjoyed the easy flowing conversational, yet mentoring tone of the book that really made the book both autobiographical and great for advice.

Ryan and Amanda both spoke relatably in a way that really connects with their peers and people of their generation. I liked how they talk realistically about the challenges that young couples face, and gave helpful advice for modern couples who want to glorify God with their marriage.

As a single reading this book, I saw so many of my dear, close friends in this book, and thought of them, they have all faced the challenges of marrying young and balancing a relationship with school, work, and plenty of naysayers.

Overall, an enjoyable read, great for young couples, dating, engaged, or married, also great for singles, though they did seem to speak more to couples at times. Definitely a great book that I would highly recommend.

Through Waters Deep by Sarah Sundin ~ Review

Through Waters Deep (Waves of Freedom, #1)My Review:

Mary Stirling has always been a silver girl, not bright and bubbly like her best friend, Quintessa, she enjoys the comfort and safety of being overlooked rather than singled out. But all that may just come in handy when tracking down the saboteur, who has been meddling with the ship, and stirring up trouble.

Jim Avery, never quite got over his childhood crush on Quintessa, his former best friend's girl. He certainly never thought that he'd find himslef falling for the whip smart secretary Mary Stirling, who is determined to help find out who is behind the sabotage, even though doing so may make her a target of the culprit.

Will they be able to solve the mystery, and find that maybe what both of them need is right in front of them?

Engaging from the start, Mary Stirling captured my heart and I was cheering for her from the very beginning. She's clever, yet modest, never wanting to cause prideful attention to herself. I loved how she grew throughout the course of the book and learned that fading into the shadows isn't always best.

Jim is a self proclaimed "floater" bringing people together comes easily to him, and he works hard, and sees what happens. But as his military career heats up, he begins to see that areas that he could work to improve, and that maybe floating isn't the best way to rise above the others in his unit. The youngest of a family with a long line of Navy men, Jim struggles to find his balance between civilian life and his career.

Fast paced, and well told, this story is well worth the read, and the characters are fantastic. I loved Mary's humbleness and modesty, she doesn't crave the spotlight, and works hard at her job. I just adored the sweet little Wilkins sisters that encourage Mary and pray for her. And Arch is a charming young man raised in an upper class family, but wants to find a girl that loves him for him, and not for his family name or money. A fantastic novel from beginning to end, and I can't wait to read the next in the series!

Love Takes the Cake by Betsy St. Amant ~ Review

Love Takes the Cake: A September Wedding Story (A Year of Weddings Novella 2, #10)
Lucie's Review:

Charlotte Cantrell runs a bakery called The Dough Knot, where she sells muffins, cookies, petit fours, but the guy who comes every morning, always orders snickerdoodles. So one day when he mentions a wedding, she assumes that he is the groom, though in reality he is the best man.

Will Martin offers to help out his buddy when the bride breaks down at the bakery, leaving Will with Charlotte to help pick out the cake and other desserts.

Can Will and Charlotte work through their pasts in order to find a bright new future?

I loved the way that Will interacted so naturally with Zoe, Charlotte's daughter, and praised Charlotte for being a great mother.

Will is so honorable, and responsible, with a former military career. He takes his faith seriously and likes how Charlotte is different from every other girl he's known.

A well written story, that is engaging and fast paced, yet also sweet and heart felt. Great characters, humor and dialogue, definitely recommend!

Promises Kept by Scarlett Dunn ~ Review

Promises Kept (The McBride Brothers, #1)
Lucie's Review:

Victoria wants to give her adopted twin sons the best that she can, and having grown up in a saloon, she knows she want to give them more than she had. So she finds what seems to be an agreeable situation, in Promise Wyoming. The only problem is that when she arrives her intended husband is dead when she arrives in Promise.

I loved how Mrs. Wellington takes Victoria and the boys in, and even plays matchmaker when handsome men come into her boardinghouse. Even though Victoria's intended dies before she arrives, he is a good man and keeps his promise to her to take care of her and the boys, by leaving everything of his to her in his will.

Victoria and the boys find new friends, one of them is an old timer named Bartholomew who tries watch out for them, especially against Mr. Wallace, a man who has his eye on the Barlow Homestead.

Colt McBride is Victoria's new neighbor and he is shocked to hear about her situation, and sends his men out to help her. He get's concerned when Victoria starts going out with Mr. Wallace as he suspects he is behind all of the mysterious fires, shootings, and missing cattle. He is great with the twins and really takes time to get to know them.

This is a very busy book, and has a lot going for it, but personally I just couldn't get over how much Colt swears and how he didn't see anything wrong with his rather loose lifestyle (which includes going upstairs with a working girl). Victoria is a strong and compassionate heroine, but Colt has clay feet, though he does try to change for her and her boys.

The Amish Bride by Emma Miller ~ Review

The Amish Bride
Lucie's Review:

Ellen Beachy takes care of her aging parents, especially her mother who is getting more and more forgetful. Ellen also works hard running her family's craft store, one day on the way to work she runs into Simeon Shetler who think that she should marry one of his sons, either Micah or Neziah. She's reluctant to say the least, but when all 5 Shetler sons arrive at dinner, she says she'll think about it.

Will Mr. Shetler's crazy marriage plan find Ellen happiness, or bungle everything up?

I really liked Ellen's dad, he is wise, and only wants to see his daughter happy and well taken care of when he is gone. He wants her to take her time, yet to be open to the possibilities.

To Ellen's surprise it's not just their dad that wants one of his sons to marry her, they aren't opposed to the idea either. Neziah and Micah are close, but they have a tendency to be very competitive, which makes things even more difficult at times--and humorous!

Neziah is a widower with two young children, and he and Ellen used to court before he met his late wife, he is mature and realizes that he wasn't always kind to her, but he never stopped loving her, and he tells her that right off the bat.

Micah is friendly and fun-loving, and he helps Ellen step out of her shell, and feel more at ease mingling with the community. He's ready to settle down, and wants Ellen to take his interest seriously.

This is a great book, I loved the tension as well as the great dialogue, I went back and forth over who she would pick, because both brothers were great and had a lot to offer. A fast read, with plenty of twists and an engaging plot.

Counting on a Cowboy by Debra Clopton ~ Review

Counting on a Cowboy (Four of Hearts Ranch #2)
Lucie's Review:

The second book in a series, it can be read alone or as part of the series. I loved "seeing" the familiar faces and catching up with the rest of the community.

Maggie is still writing her advice column, and her advice is one of the things that convinced Abby Knightly to move to Wishing Springs.

Bo Monahan is trying to wrangle a stubborn bull off the road, when suddenly he's blinded by headlights, and almost run over, and the car goes off the road. He goes to check on the driver, and she seems to be OK until she sees blood and faints.

When Bo and Abby find a baby on Bo's doorstep they are confused, until it is discovered that the boy is Bo's son, and now that his mother is dead, Bo is responsible for raising Levi. Abby steps in and offers her help, will this make shift family make in it for the long haul?

Bo is the perfect cowboy hero, he's made his mistakes in the past and owns up to them. The youngest of the Monhan brothers, he works hard as a custom stirrup maker, firefighter, and of course cowboy. He's determined to be the best dad that he can be to little Levi. I love how he and his brothers are devoted to their grandfather and want to help him out and keep him from going to a home, despite his struggles with Alzheimer's. He's also devoted to being a good friend to Abby, and takes time to let her know that he'll be there for her.

I love how Abby get's her second chance in Wishing Springs and how the women welcome her with open arms.

Overall, this was great read, engaging and fast paced, it was a hard one to put down, I got so immersed in the story and the community, I can't wait to go back soon! There was great dialogue and I loved how both Abby and Bo learned how the mistakes of the past don't define them today. What a great read!

 (Thomas Nelson, August 2015)

After losing everything she held dear, Abby never wants to love again. But a certain cowboy may just spur her to wonder if love might be worth the risk.

Running from a past that haunts her, Abby Knightly is drawn to the cozy town of Wishing Springs, Texas. Maybe this small town could offer hope and healing and a future for Abby . . . if she's brave enough to reach out and take it by the reins.

Between taking care of his Pops and his growing stirrup business, he isn't looking for serious romantic commitments. But when the infant son he never knew about shows up at his doorstep, his world is turned upside down.

This confirmed bachelor might not think he needs a wife, but he sure needs help. Even Abby can see that, and despite her best efforts to keep her distance, she can't help but be drawn to this new father-son duo. As Abby throws herself into helping Bo navigate fatherhood, hope sparks between them, revealing that maybe, just maybe, they can navigate their dark pasts and emerge together into a future as bright as the Texas sun itself.

Irish Meadows by Susan Anne Mason ~ Review

Irish Meadows (Courage to Dream #1)Lucie's Review:

Love and marriage are not roads that are ever all sunshine and roses.

Brianna O'Leary has a passion for horses and reading, and would rather be pursuing an education than marriage alongside her flirtatious sister, Colleen.

Gilbert Whelan has long been a good friend to Brianna and her family, ever since their family took him in after his mother died. Gil sees Brianna as more than a sister, but her feels indebted to her father for taking him in, so he does what their father requests even thought he knows it will hurt Brianna.

Rylan Montgomery is the distant relation of Mrs O'Leary, and is staying at Irish Meadows for the summer while he trains to be a priest. He has a passion for serving the orphans.

Colleen infuriates her father by causing a suitor to retract his offer of marriage, and as punishment she is assigned to accompany Rylan in his work at the orphanage.

A tale of family and friendship, Irish Meadows is the story of two sisters, who find where they are meant to be despite expectations and the course set before them.

I like how Brianna takes charge of her life and goes to college, following her dreams. And how working with the children at the orphanage, really helps Colleen mature and see things from a different view.

Overall, this book follows the sisters through the ups and downs, as they grow up and find strength in their faith.

About the book:
Irish Meadows
 (Bethany House, July 2015)

Faced with an uncertain future, sometimes all you have left is the courage to dream.

Brianna and Colleen O'Leary know their Irish immigrant father expects them to marry well. Recently he's put even more pressure on them, insinuating that the very future of their Long Island horse farm, Irish Meadows, rests in their ability to land prosperous husbands. Both girls, however, have different visions for their futures.

Brianna, a quiet girl with a quick mind, dreams of attending college. Vivacious Colleen, meanwhile, is happy to marry---as long as her father's choice meets her exacting standards of the ideal groom. When former stable hand Gilbert Whelan returns from business school and distant relative Rylan Montgomery visits Long Island during his seminary training, the two men
quickly complicate everyone's plans.

As the farm slips ever closer to ruin, James O'Leary grows more desperate. It will take every ounce of courage for both sisters to avoid being pawns in their father's machinations and instead follow their hearts. And even if they do, will they inevitably find their dreams too distant to reach?

A Worthy Pursuit by Karen Witemeyer ~ Review

A Worthy PursuitMy Review:

Charlotte Atherton will do anything to keep her beloved students safe, even if it means taking them across the country away from those that would do them harm.

Stone Hammond is a legend, a retriever, known by his reputation for always collecting his reward and finding what he was sent for, but will this determined teacher change his mind about what he once thought was black and white?

When I first started reading this book I was a bit skeptical of the premise, but as I read the pieces started to fall into place, making for an exciting, and heartwarming adventure!

I was thrilled to get the opportunity to read and review this amazing book, from the very beginning the children captured my heart. I loved how they had their special talents that were being nurtured, and how Charlotte praised them, yet at the same time kept them humble.

I loved each of the children, and how though they were so different, they worked well together, and all blossomed under Charlotte's loving encouragement. One of my favorite characters had to be Mr. Dobson, nicknamed the "gnome" by Stone, he has a gruff exterior, but inside has a heart of pure gold and will do anything to protect Miss Charlotte and the children from harm.

Action-packed and full of mystery and taunt with suspense, this well written romance was well worth the read, and definitely brought a smile to my face, throughout. I loved how well developed each of the characters were, as well as how the story came together. I'm definitely hoping for a companion/sequel, maybe with Dan and Marietta? A fantastic read from beginning to end, that will capture your heart.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review. Thank you!

Frontier Engagement by Regina Scott ~ Review

Frontier Engagement

Lucie's Review:

Alexandrina Fosgave came to Seattle to start a new life as a schoolteacher, not as a bride. She knows she doesn't have much experience, and wonders why she was chosen over more qualified applicants. So she has more than a few doubts on her mind.
James Wallin is the fourth of the Wallin brothers, of Wallin Landing, set to collect the new teacher, because he has a way with words and knows how to charm the ladies. But when they get lost in the wilderness, James offers to marry her to save her reputation.

James a nice young man not typically at a loss for words, and he can usually find the humor in everything. James is kind and understanding and comes up with a new name for Alexandrina in her fresh start, "Rina." He has quick wit, and soon finds out that Rina can give as good as she gets.

Rina has a passion for helping children and finds ways to creatively inspire constructive behavior.

Overall, a wonderfully engaging story with well written characters that you can't help but cheer for the entire way through. There was great dialogue and humor, and I loved revisiting Wallin Landing.

A Heart's HomeLucie's Review:

This book is the conclusion to the six part series by Colleen Coble, Emmie and Isaac come to terms with the secrets between them, and three brave couples find their way on the wild Wyoming frontier.

Full of faith, friendship, and history, I loved how the women banded together to support each other through hard times, and how they stood by their men, though the future was uncertain. It's a story about friendship and bravery, packed with action and adventure, drama, and a great conclusion to the series, packing a lot into a rather small book.

Overall, a great conclusion to a great series, that brings Wyoming history to life, and I loved how each of the books has a stunning picture on the cover.

Diary of a Jackwagon by Tim Hawkins with John Driver ~ Review

Diary of a Jackwagon
My Review:

I've long been a fan of Tim Hawkins, so when I saw that he was releasing a book I knew I had to read it. So when the opportunity came up to review this book, I snatched it up.

Tim tells many of his classic jokes mixed with new ones, as well as life lessons. This book will have you chuckling and chortling along, as Tim tells his stories of yoga pants, colonoscopies, and Cracker Barrel.

Short easy to read chapters, with little tweet nuggets at the end of each, making this a fun book to both read aloud with others, as well as easy to find stopping point, when life requires it.

Fast paced and engaging, this book is perfect for the life long fan, or someone who has never heard any of his jokes.

Overall, a well written knee-slapper of a read, that had me laughing in the most inappropriate moments. I would definitely  recommend it to anyone who would like a little entertainment, or is a fan of Hawkin's comedy.

The Prince Who was Just Himself by Silke Schnee ~ Review

The Prince Who Was Just Himself
My Review:

Prince Noah is the third son of the King and Queen, he's a little different, but his family loves him just the way he is. When evil comes to the kingdom, will help come from the most unexpected place?

This simple and sweet children's picture book is filled with colorful illustrations and plenty of potential. I liked the beginning of the book, but as a whole I felt that it dropped off kinda abruptly in the end, especially after a more drawn out buildup, even before Noah was born. In my opinion, either the book needed to be shorter or longer.

It has potential, and is a sweet hearted book for children, I think it could help start a conversation if more resources were also available.

Overall, this was a sweet book, well illustrated and well done, yet I feel unable to completely say that I liked it because the ending was just so abrupt, and that was that. I also had many questions about where the princes' parents were during the attack, and why they didn't send an army with them, or Noah's uniqueness aside, let their 5-7 year old son ride into battle? I'm probably over analyzing this way too much, but as a whole this book was underwhelming, but had some great potential.

Hope Harbor by Irene Hannon ~ Review

Hope HarborLucie's Review:

Michael Hunter has plans to spend his days in Hope Harbor in peaceful solitude, relaxing on the beach and staying at the local motel. But when the only motel in town closes, Michael is so distracted that he steps in front of an oncoming bicycle.
Tracey Campbell doesn't hit Michael after he steps in front of her bike, but she instead manages to take a spill herself. Michael feels terrible about causing her wreck, and tries to make it up to her, and instead finds that she has roped him into volunteering with "Helping Hands," a ministry sponsored by the 2 churches in town.
As Michael and Tracey work together they find ways to reach out and expand the ministry, who would have know that Michael's "vacation " would change his life?

I loved this wonderful books with all the great characters an the wonderful setting. There were so many wonderful and memorable characters, like Uncle Bud, who is like a father figure to Tracey, and her biggest fan.

I loved Michael and Tracey, they both brought the best out in each other, and encouraged each other, to encourage others. They got to know each other and their relationship developed naturally.

Overall, a hopeful story full of great characters, romance, friendship, community, and second chances. I definitely recommend it :)
