When Jacob Wythe is appointed as manager of the Morgan Bank he thinks he has made it. The job comes with a mansion, fully staffed with servants, yet there is one stipulation: He must get married. Jacob insinuates that he already has a fiancé, so he needs a bride quick!
Marty answers his ad for a bride, because she wants to leave behind the memories of her late husband and the dangers of the ranch that killed him.
Can these two find love that is more than A Sensible Arrangement?
One of my favorite relationships was actually between Mr. Brighton and Mrs. Landry, Mr. Brighton is a butler who was trained in England and has very specific ideas of a butler's duties. However, in Denver the housekeeper runs the household, and Mrs. Landry doesn't let him forget it!
Marty and Jacob don't connect right off the bat, and it takes a while before they start communicating, but Alice, Marty's lady's maid helps Marty to feel at home, by being her friend.
For the first third of this book, there wasn't much going on, and it was mostly about changing clothes and attending various teas and parties, Marty actually mentions that this bores her as well. So I could sympathize with her there.
Overall, this wasn't really a book that I was able to get into. Jacob and Marty just didn't communicate enough for their connection to seem realistic. So while this book had a lot going for it, I learned a lot about the troubles Denver faced with the value of silver collapsed, I couldn't ever completely love it. This book left a handful of loose ends, and I am hoping that they get tied up in the next book, perhaps? So while this wasn't the romance that I expected it did tell Marty's story well and her journey back to her faith and learning to live again.
