Never Forget by Jody Hedlund ~ Review

Never Forget (Beacons of Hope, #5)My Review:

Abby Watson lives on Rose Island with her forgetful grandfather, Hosea, tending the lighthouse. Abby and Hosea are in danger of losing the lighthouse post due to Hosea's failing memories and ability to care for the lighthouse, but Abby fears that if they lost the lighthouse and moved to the mainland, that Hosea would grow even more forgetful and agitated. Her husband is dead, but the lighthouse superintendent doesn't know that. So when a man washes upon the shore, with no memory of his previous life or even his true name, Abby and Hosea take him in. But when the superintendent makes a surprise visit, Hosea mistakenly tells him that the man is her husband, Nate, returned from his travels, and Abby doesn't correct him.

Nathaniel Winthrop III has no memory of his name or marrying the beautiful woman who tends the Rose Island Lighthouse. But he can taste the stale whiskey on his breath, and knows that he hasn't been a good man or husband, so he resolves to turn his life around and do his best to prove to Abby that he is worthy of her love and forgiveness.

As the truth becomes even more twisted, will Abby be able to tell Nathaniel the truth, despite beginning to fall for him?

The fifth and final installment in the Beacons of Hope Series, works well as a stand alone novel, but if you do read it by its self, I think you'll find that you will definitely want to go back and read the previous books in the series!

Abby is a strong capable woman, she aptly takes care of the lighthouse and her aging grandfather. I admired her love for her grandfather, and her patience with him.

Nathaniel, was probably my favorite character, he was repentant from the start, and even though he didn't remember his life before the wreck, he wanted to change and make things right. One of my favorite things about him was his relationship with Hosea, and how he had a gentle respect in the way he treated him. I loved watching him become the man that God had meant him to be over the course of the book.

Hosea is a dear man, even though he doesn't always remember his family or who they are, he loves them fiercely. He is a gentle spirited man, full of hope despite his situation.

Overall, this was a fantastic final to an amazing series, I couldn't help but love Hosea, Abby, and Nathaniel, and cheer for them throughout. There was great storytelling, dialog, danger, and sizzling tension. My favorite parts were when Abby and Nathaniel were together. You won't want to miss this absolutely amazing novel of faith, family, love, and second chances!

A Daring Sacrifice by Jody Hedlund ~ Review

A Daring Sacrifice (An Uncertain Choice, #2)My Review:

Juliana Wessex, though born of noble blood, has lived her last few years in the forest among her people, gaining infamy as the Cloaked Bandit. One day she raids an old acquaintance, Collin Goodrich, who sees through her disguise and challenges her to live among the nobles for a week and in turn he will live in the forest among the peasants.

But when Collin's sister invites Juliana's despicable Uncle and cousin to the Goodrich estate, Juliana's cover is in danger of discovery, she must fight to defend her people, but will it mean denying her heart?

Collin Goodrich is back in this companion novel to An Uncertain Choice, and in many ways this is as much his story as Juliana's. Told through alternating first-person point-of-view, the alternating narrative kept the pages turning, in this fast paced read.

I really liked how Collin was always respectful of Juliana, he knew that there were times to leave her alone, and let her go. I really liked how he was open to being challenged to think about his life and the blessings that he'd been given.

I admired Juliana for her compassionate heart. I liked that she found herself equally challenged by Collin to think differently as well about her choices in life, and I think that might be what I liked most about their relationship--that they challenged each other to be better people.

Overall, a well told story, quick moving, and enjoyable to the very last. A captivating story, with strong characters, a dashing knight in shining, and a damsel-not-in-distress, with a tension filled, heart pounding plot line. I would definitely recommend this book to fans of An Uncertain Choice, and Melanie Dickerson's books!

A Noble Groom by Jody Hedlund ~ Review & Giveaway

A Noble Groom
My Review: I was genuinely swept away by this marvelous story, as the characters captured my heart!

Annalisa finds herself widowed, with her only option being to marry a man that her father chooses for her. But when a mysteriously dashing man who calls himself Carl Richards comes into her and her daughter's lives, challenging her preconceptions about men in general, will she find A Noble Groom in Carl before her mail-order groom arrives?

I fell in love with the characters of Ms. Hedlund's wonderful new novel! From the very beginning I was engrossed in Annalisa's predicament, because I had connected with her almost instantly. Annalisa was a terrific heroine, with a strength and determination about her that made her admirable, but down-to-earth at the same time.

And Carl was amazing, and I loved it wasn't just his interaction with Annalisa that made me love him but the way he was kind to her children as well. Gretchen was so cute!

The plot was compelling and engaging, I had a hard time putting this one down. I loved how genuine the many relationships were in this book, and how they grew honestly and realistically.

Overall, this was a fantastic book, that showed the harsh prairie life, and definitely explored a full range of emotions. I have a feeling that this one is going to be a favorite of 2013 :) Definitely a book that I heartily recommend!

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Jody Hedlund Shares a Secret + Giveaway!

Secret #8: My worst injury.
By Jody Hedlund, @JodyHedlund
I'm really fortunate that I've been blessed with good health most of my life. I haven't been in any major accidents. And in fact, I've never broken a bone.
Of course, I've had the usual scrapes and bruises. I got my first stitches when I was playing high school softball, and the ball decided to hit my sunglasses into my eyebrow, splitting it open nicely.
Then I gave birth to five children, including one C-section as well as stitches in places I won't mention.
I've had my share of painful moments.
But I'd have to say my worst injury came during a family vacation in the U.P. (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan. We were staying in a large cabin overlooking Lake Huron. It was fall, the changing leaves were gorgeous, and the weather perfect.
Now, if you've ever visited the shores along the southern stretch of the U.P., you'll quickly realize that the terrain is mostly rocky with Big. Jagged. Rocks.
And you'll also realize that storms sometimes seem to spring up off the lake out of nowhere. Especially when you're hiking on Big. Jagged. Rocks. With very young children.
My husband and I decided we'd have a better chance at out-running the storm, if we each gave one of our twins a piggy-back ride. I can see where your mind is going at this point, that you're thinking we may not have made the best decision to give piggy-back rides while out-running a storm on Big. Jagged. Rocks.
Well, if you were thinking that was a stupid decision, you were right.
I tripped. And in order to keep my daughter safely on my back, I didn't use any hands to brace myself during the fall.
Yes, I fell straight onto a Big. Jagged. Rock. And I slashed open my knee. Very deeply.
So now, I was out-running the storm on Big. Jagged. Rocks. While holding my knee together. With young children who were crying and scared.
Fun vacation, huh?
I ended up getting 12 stitches and having to keep my leg up for most of the rest of our time in the U.P. But thankfully, I was the one who got hurt and not one of my kids. There's always a silver lining to every story, isn't there?
Now that I've grossed you out, it's your turn! What's the worst injury you've ever had?
