Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions, Volume Two by Ken Ham, Bodie Hodge, Tim Chaffey & Others ~ Review

My Review: Have you every been confused about how two different passages referring to the same things can possibly fit together, or even wondered if the Bible got it wrong? If so, or even if you haven't, this book is for you.

The multiple authors of this book answer answer forty questions clearing up some Biblical question marks, using the Bible, science, and literal root translation. The questions ranged from simple misunderstandings to tough and scientific questions, such as, "Do rabbits really 'chew the cud'?" The book dealt with both Old Testament and New Testament scriptures in an understandable comprehensive manner, that added both humor and logic. I thought I knew most of the stuff that would be covered in this book, but I was happily suprised to learn many new things.

Our family used it as part of our family devotions, and it was a great addition! I highly recommend using it this way because the chapters are short and won't go over the heads of children 11 & up.

Overall and wonderful read that is made into many short chapters so that it is easy to pick up and put down whenever you have a moment to spare, and that moment will definitely be worth your time!
I highly recommend that you pick up this wonderful read that can also be a powerful tool.

It Could Happen Tomorrow by Gary Frazier ~ Review

My Review: A book that will make you think!

Bible prophecy might not be as complicated as you may think.
"What's that?" You say. It's true. Alot of the things that make Bible prophecy hard to understand occur when people try to squeeze their own preconceived ideas into the Bible rather than take it as written. Along with debunking end time myths, Mr. Fraizier defends the traditional end time scale, with well thought out arguments as well as offers theories of his own.

I really liked how well thought out this book is, and how Mr. Fraizier makes a clear distinction between what his personal theories are and what the Bible says. I loved how this book really challenged me think and to ask myself, am I living like It Could Happen Tomorrow? I really liked how this book encourages a sense of urgency, and push to spread the Gospel. It was also awesome to learn about some under-the-table deals going on all over the world that aren't reported on in the US media. I closed this book feeling informed and passionate to spread the Gospel.

One thing I will mention is that parts of this book are just the author saying what he thinks could happen, not necessarily what will happen. And though I don't fully believe in all of his theories, I do think that they are pretty accurate, as to the possibilities of what could happen. And it will totally give you lots to chew on, and think about. I think one of the things that really hit me is how people are trying to erode and change what we believe about the end times, by saying that things are in the Bible that aren't really there. And that is so dangerous!

Overall I would highly recommend this book because it was both challenging and easy to read, written in a conversational tone, which when added with the topic makes it impossible to put down. It's a book that I would peg as Biblically sound. I normally wouldn't pick up an end time book book because of how it might end up being against my beliefs, but since this one is from the same publisher that puts out all the Answers in Genesis stuff, I gave it a shot and I'm glad I did :)

What's Four Letter Words about, and where did you get the title?

Four Letter Words is about defending your faith in Christ. If you've ever felt
tongue-tied standing up for Jesus, this book can help.
Even though our culture claims tolerance as a virtue, that tolerance stops at
Christianity's front door: witness the hostility directed toward a sincere Christ-
follower like Tim Tebow. Judging by reactions to him, you'd think he just cussed
out his grandma when all he did was say a word for Christ. Speaking God's truth
and living your faith is quickly becoming today's profanity. Tougher days are
coming; we need to get ready.
There has never been a truth-system more satisfying, consistent, logical and
beautiful than Christianity. I wanted to help God's people rise up and say so.

Did you ever struggle with your faith? How did you work through that?

Even though I've been a pastor for a long time, I struggle with my faith a lot. My
earliest struggles – back in high school days – centered on scientific stuff, like
evolution. In the book I tell the story of how I made peace with faith in a Creator
God and how I fit together science, logic, and the gospel in my own heart.
Now that I'm a bit older, my struggles come more out of pain and suffering. Why
does God let people hurt? I cover those topics too.
Struggles are normal – we just can't let them overwhelm our faith or uproot our
joy. It's super-important for us to know every question raised against Christianity
has an answer. I try to provide some of those answers along with simple talking
points for everyday conversations.

If I read this book, what will get out of it?

I wrote Four Letter Words with three simple goals in mind:
1. Clarity: Know what you believe.
2. Confidence: Know why you believe.
3. Courage: Know what to say when you don't know what to say.

What's your spiritual background? How did you get started with Jesus?

I was reared in a tiny Chicago gospel church. I was loved. I was cared for. I was
taught the Bible. That church was my second family. They introduced me to
Jesus. I received him when I was young and devoted my life to him. But it wasn't
until young adulthood that I began to appreciate how much Jesus was devoted to
me. That discovery rocked my world. I shifted from rules to relationship and from
guilt to grace. I dedicated my life to encourage instead of tear down. I strive to
free others from guilt, shame, and legalism, and to help people discover life and
love through God's amazing grace.

So what do you do when you're not writing?

I'm the husband of one incredible wife and dad to two amazing kids. My main
calling is as a pastor to the Neighborhood Church of Redding, a small-town
church of over 2,000 set amid the snow-capped peaks and pristine lakes of
northern California. I love preaching and teaching—spreading out a rich feast
of God and his grace and digging deep into God's Word. I also serve on the
faculties of A.W. Tozer Theological Seminary and Simpson University. I like
watching mindless action movies, reading, hanging with friends, bass fishing,
woodworking, good coffee, and Chicago sports teams. Go Bears!

My Review: Four Letter Words. That's one eye-popping title isn't it? Throughout the course of this book Dr. Giovannetti overviews, in a conversational tone, the logic in our faith's basic doctorines.

I was glad to find this book biblically sound, and enjoyed the easy to read style in which this book was written. I enjoyed how each chapter was summed up right at the beginning, with the "Touchy Ideas" & "Touchy Scriptures" which I thought, helped me to understand the main drift of each particular chapter. Though this book is bold, I would have liked to see it be even bolder. This is just my personal opinion, but I felt that there were some topics that were purposely avoided so as not to offend anyone. For example, evolution and creation. I thought that even if this book wasn't specifically talking about that topic, that a brief "stand" would have been great, and possibly a link pointing the readers to some great resources on the topic.

Don't get me wrong I think this book is great, and the tips on how to (politely) challenge your peers with tough questions were very helpful. I have no opinion on the QR enabled codes. I read the book without looking up the codes and then later went online and looked them up. In my opinion they weren't really that big of a deal and the book can certainly be read without them.

Overall, a very interesting book that though a large majority of it was review for me, I did pick up some nice tips here an there and think that it would be a great read for anybody questioning how faith and logic work together :)

Take Back the Land by Rick Boyer ~ Review

My Review: Take Back the Land is a must read for Christians, though it is directed to homeschooled youth, I believe that it would be beneficial to parents and non-homeschooled teens as well. Though much of this was review for me, I found that this book was very reaffirming. I especially enjoyed how this book was like a warm conversation with a mentor. Also, this book is a great read, and is especially timely with the 2012 Presidential Election taking place later this year.

In my opinion, this book reminds me slightly of Do Hard Things, but much better! Take Back the Land is honest and opinionated and doesn't apologize for it which was a welcome change from the typical teen non-fiction reads that try to please everyone and don't dig deep enough. Reading this book was like a honest conversation with Mr. Boyer, with a few chuckles on the side. Though there were some things I disagreed with, I agreed with the main point and the call to be citizens who make a difference. I'm proud to say that by this November, I will be eighteen and able to vote for the first time!

Take Back the Land covers the changes in the last few decades that have taken place in Education, the Media, the Church, the Family, the Government, the Courts, and the Arts. All of which we should be very concerned about! If you aren't already, this book will put a fire under your seat to get involved in the election of politicians, and the way our country is running these days, to make a difference!

Though I admit that this book wasn't exactly world changing for me--I'm a teenager who thinks that watching this year's political caucuses, primaries, and elections is fun, because you can find a gazillion logical fallacies just listening to what most of those people say--I do think it re-affirmed my beliefs and was very encouraging. And I would totally pass this book on to my younger brother, I've been begging my mother to make this book required reading for him, I think it will be just the thing to fire him up :)

I did say that there were a few things I disagreed with, but those were very minor things and are just my personal opinion and not worth mentioning, the way some things were said, some things that though they were true for the most part were generalized more than I thought they should have been, etc. But overall this is such a great book!

Unveiling the Kings of Israel by David Downs ~ review

My Review:  Unveiling the Kings of Israel is a book that matches events in the Bible with archaeological finding all over the world. Have you ever wondered where Beth Shimesh was? Or if it even existed? If so this is the book for you, over 175  pages filled with beautiful pictures and information all meticulously compiled.

I was a bit surprised when I picked it up because I thought that it would focus more on a Biblical timeline compared the Egyptian one, and why we should trust the Biblical one. And don't get me wrong it covered that, but not in the detail I expected. It talked more about archaeological findings and buried cities, but I'm not comlaining. This book went through the findings chronologically as they were mentioned in scripture, and it explained some customs and the significance of certain elements of the history that will enrich your Bible reading experience.

I enjoyed the photography and the good research, but at times I felt a bit lost and confused as to what Mr. Downs point was. Other times I thought that it cut off rather suddenly while explaining something and go on to something else. But that's all my personal opinion.

Overall I found it well researched yet a bit confusing to follow at times, but definitely a good read of you are interested in archaeological cities and how they match with the Bible. Not to mention a very lovely and attractive book :)

Already Compromised by Ken Ham, Greg Hall & Britt Beemer ~ review

My Review: I was so excited to get a chance to review this book, because I am a huge fan of Ken Ham and Answers in Genesis. I have read many books by him and enjoyed them all. This book was no exception. Since I'm at the age where I'm starting to think about college and where I want to go, I was so happy to been so well informed before I make a huge decision. But the thing is the truth is really sobering, and I am so blessed to have read this book BEFORE I go to college. I was shocked to learn how compromised Christian colleges have become in the last few years, it just blew me away.

The research was well done, and you can tell that it was very thorough. I was pleased with how they interpreted the statistics, not adding anything that wasn't there or making the results look a certain way. They were very open and honest about how they had ideas about why they might have gotten the results they did, but they admitted that they really don't know why certain people answered questions they way they did. Not only did they ask questions, they asked the same basic questions multiple times with different wording, and the results were drastically changed! This is the way statistics should be done!

Not only did this book warn parents and students about the sorry state of colleges these days it also, talked about finding a good college, and how you can't expect perfection from any college. There was also a special chapter for students, that was very encouraging, saying that no matter where you go to college the most important thing is the strength and stability of your faith. No matter where you go to college.

The appendix of this book was jam-packed full of goodies! And definitely worth reading. Such as an article on the new world of "Newspeak" the scary new double talk that is taking over our culture. And ones about understanding worldview and another affirming that Moses really did write the books that he is traditionally credited with.

In all this is a must read, no matter your age, we must all be aware of the radical changes in the culture around us so that we can fight against it and win!

My review: This book is energetically written and you can immediately feel his passion for this subject. Mr. Lennox refutes Mr. Hawking using logic and reason, adding humor and common sense. I really liked his energy throughout the entire book, his train of reason was easy to follow along with and I enjoyed the straightforward style of his writing, as if he were talking right to me. I felt that he argued well and that I learned somethings about other worldviews that I'd never thought about before. I also appreciated how he he stayed right on topic throughout the entire book.

On the negative, and I really don't like to say things that are negative but I felt that I had to speak up. In this book Mr. Lennox briefly mentioned the timeline of Creation and implied that nobody knows how much time it took and that it could have taken 13.7 billion years. This goes against my beliefs, I believe in a literal 6 day creation as written in the Bible. I felt that Mr. Lennox should have stood up for a literal 6 day creation, though I applaud him for boldly speaking out for unique Creation by the One and Only God, a thing that too few people do these days.

Overall I thought that this was an engaging read, that was easy to understand, and I learned a lot! But I would advise this book to be read with discernment, by a teenage and adult audience. Thanks!
