Pride, Prejudice, and Cheese Grits by Mary Jane Hathaway ~ Review

Lucie's Review:

A light-hearted look at how life imitates art, with humorous Southern slant.

Shelby is not a huge fan of Austen, but her roommate Rebecca is. So when Shelby tells Rebecca about her run in with Ransom Fielding, Rebecca immediately compares him to the elusive Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. But Shelby prefers fact to fiction, she even wrote a book on the topic of the Civil War, to which Fielding has given a scathing review.

Ransom comes to Midland College for a year of rest and relaxation, to do some research, never expecting to meet the author of a book that he reviewed. Least of all he never expected to develop very unlamp-like feelings toward her...

This book is completely delightful. And while it shares some similarities to Pride and Prejudice, this is a completely fresh original story filled with colorful side character and plenty of good-natured humor. This book is brimming with drama, mystery, misunderstandings, errant conclusions, and burning biscuits.

Ransom is a wonderful, yet flawed hero. Like Darcy he is dark, brooding, and even a bit rude on the outside, but inside he has a heart of gold, and is harboring guilt and regret over the circumstances that led to his wife's death.

One of my favorite parts made me laugh out loud. When Shelby told Ransom about how her grandmother mistakenly plucked some turkeys!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, from cover to cover. It had a quick start, great pace, and an upbeat storyline. There were well developed and likable main characters, faith themes, and a multifaceted plot, plus a bonus recipe for cheese grits! A great read for lovers of romantic comedies!

The Baron's Honourable Daughter by Lynn Morris ~ Review

Lucie's Review:

Valeria Segrave is the daughter of a baron, but after his death, her mother marries Lord Maledon, a man of no honor. But only after Lord Maledon's death that his indiscretions come to light.
It is after Lord Maledon's death that Alastair Hylton comes galloping in her life, with the knowledge and know-how to help her family escape the ruins that Lord Maledon left behind.

Valeria is a headstrong, intelligent and outspoken young woman, with a very low view of marriage because of what Maledon did to her family. Maledon stole he dowry, but Valeria doesn't want it back. She doesn't want to be pursued for her wealth.

Alastair is impressed with Valeria's strength under the strain of everything that has come to light since Maledon's death. He constantly finds himself matching wits with her, and is quick to offer advice and opinions that she didn't ask for, though at times he can also be a bit dense.

This is a book that is divided into three basic parts. 1. Before Maledon's death, and the events leading up to it. 2. Alastair comes into their life. 3. The Season in London. At times I found it very slow moving and long, interestingly enough the best parts of this book are in middle when she and Alastair are matching wits, before they go to London.

Overall this book has a colorful cast of characters filled with many details of what makes up a season in London as well as immersing the reader into the proper rules of propriety for English society in the 19th century. And some of that just got a bit overwhelming for my personal taste. I think this would be a great book for fans of regency fiction, because there is a great attention to detail and a realistic view of life for a young lady in the midst of a season.

Raptor 6 by Ronie Kendig ~ Review & Litfuse Tour

Astor's Review: A new thrilling series from author Ronie Kendig!

Dean Watter is a man with a mission. Tasked with reclaiming the ten missing computers from the enemy, that put the whole of the US military in danger if unencrypted, Dean is determined to complete his mission.

Zarah is a missionary teacher,  caught unwittingly in the crossfire. Will Dean be able to protect Zarah from the terrorists who want to use her gifts in quantum cryptology to destroy the US.

I had high expectations from this book, as Ronie Kendig is one of my favorite authors, and I was not disappointed at all.

There was non-stop action throughout, with a great fast-paced plot, with quick moving chapters making this book both easy and impossible to put down--I realize that makes very little sense, but it's true.

The characters were well written and developed over the course of the book, I really though that Zarah was very admirable, because even in chaos, not understanding what was going on she put others first when she would have had every reason to worry about herself.

Overall, this was an excellent action adventure, military thriller, filled with admirable characters and plenty of action and plot twists, none of which do I want to share with you. Fantastic read!

Until I Found You by Victoria Bylin ~ Review

Lucie's Review:

Nick Sheridan finds Kate Derby just in time, pulling her from her vehicle right before it plummets over the side of a mountain. Kate is the granddaughter of his employer, and though there is attraction, Nick has made a commitment no not date for a year. But her can't bring himself to abandon her after everything that she's already been through...

This is a multifaceted drama, with well developed main characters, and several wonderful and colorful side characters, like Leona, who is admirable in her faith even when she struggled.

The interaction between the characters is believable, and moves much of the story. The journeys of faith were excellently done, and touching. I really appreciated how it followed Nick and his journey to understanding and becoming a man of honor and faith.

Overall, this was a sweet and touching read that made for a quick read that I enjoyed all of the way through!

Saving Amelie by Cathy Gohlke ~ Review

My Review:

Lea Hartman and her husband long for a child to fill their empty arms, but when Friederich is called away to do his duty to his country, Lea finds her place directing the children's choir for the annual Passion Play in Oberammergau.

Lea and Rachel are two sides of a coin, bound together despite their drastically different upbringings brought together in this heart-stoppingly, compelling novel from Award-winning author, Cathy Gohlke.

From the very beginning I was drawn into this novel and captivated by its brave heroines Rachel and Lea. My heart immediately went out to Lea and her husband Friederich as they tried to make sense of the senseless cruelty that Lea was subjected to, yet they were strong throughout as they never wavered in their unconditional love for each other.

Though this book is very close to 450 pages I never felt like it dragged or slowed down. Ms. Gohlke took such care with this story, I could immediately tell that she'd researched the topic meticulously, with special attention to detail to make this story possible. There was so much heart and faith woven into this story, tugging at my heart and making me fall in love with the many brave men, women, and children who gave all to live God's word.

This book deals with the very real and horrific things that happened in the name of race purification during WWII, such as in voluntary sterilization, euthanization, and eugenics. But the author deals with these subjects well, conveying the gravity of these situations while not being overly graphic.

Overall, this is a thrilling and compelling historical novel that celebrates the brave men, women, and children who gave much in a fight that was not just for freedom, but for the basic human right of life. Cathy Gohlke has hit it out of the park with this powerful novel, filled with faith, and heroes that I will never forget!

Review:

Kyrin and Jace's worlds collide in this adventure fraught read set in a fantasy world where gladiators still battle, and though darkness is closing in, hope still shines bright and pure.

Kyrin is a gifted young woman, who trains to serve the emperor along side her twin brother Kaden. While Jace is a person of mixed-blood, considered the lowest of the low, looked down upon by all.

Can they leave behind everything they've ever known to lead a Resistance?

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book, and I think I was expecting something quite different, and as a result it took me a while to get into the story and understand what was really going on. But as I got to know the characters and understand their environment I found myself drawn into the story.

This is a great book for fans of dysotopian fiction, who like the action and complex characters. While the setting isn't really dysotopian, there are many similarities that I think dysotopian fans would appreciate, while being swept into a completely fresh fantasy, with strong Christian themes.

I think what I admired about the Kyrin and Jace was their faith through the tough times, it certainly wasn't easy. There was also great depth to the faith messages.

Overall, a great new novel, with memorable characters, strong faith, and great dialogue. I would definitely recommend this book to Christian Fantasy lovers.

Gillette Venus has a new razor, and it is just adorable! A miniature razor with a fully functioning, full-sized head, packed smartly in a travel case, that has holes in it so you can put it away wet or dry. At home or on the go, this is a genius product that you can use where ever you are.

Just a little bigger than the palm of my hands this razor can go with me wherever I travel this summer.

I have never tried a Venus razor at all before, and it was amazing how much the moisture strips and hinged head with five razors made a difference, leaving no unwanted hairs behind. All I used was the razor and some water, and I got great results.

Personally, I think this is a product that I would use anytime, not just on the go but also at home.

This is a handy product that I would definitely recommend to those on the go, or traveling this summer, or even for at home use, because who doesn't need a smart practical way to store their razor?  Overall, just a great product. Thank you. #InASnap

While Love Stirs by Lorna Seilstad ~ Review

Lucie's Review: 

Charlotte Gregory learned a lot about cooking at Fannnie Farmer's School of Cookery, everything from nutrition and cleanliness and creating delicious meals. But no one wants to give Charlotte a chance, not the chef at the hotel or the doctor at the hospital where her sister Hannah just had her baby.
Dr. Joel Brooks has a lot on his mind. He is the youngest superintendent at the hospital, his budget is tight and a young terminal patient. He doesn't have time to worry about how the food tastes or anything other than the matters he considers important, can a determined young woman change his mind?

This is a fun, fast-paced read, with many humorous moments that made me grin ear-to-ear. The side character were stellar, friends and encouragers, always pointing Joel and Charlotte to God.

Circumstances bring Charlotte and Joel together, they are both strong, determined individuals, with equally strong opinions. I loved how they kept being brought together.

Overall, this was a fantastic read with great characters, and many wonderful historical elements. One of the things that I thought was really awesome, was how Fannie Farmer really did have a school of cookery that used standardized measurements, and emphasized nutrition, simplifying and revolutionizing cooking. Just an absolutely delightful full read, and a wonderful addition to the Gregory Sisters Series.

Gathering Shadows by Nancy Mehl ~ Review

Astor's Review: 
Wynter Evans is a young woman with a promising career as a reporter. When going through a box of photographs with her friend, she is startled to see the face of a young boy who looks strikingly similar to her missing brother, Ryan.
her search for her brother takes her to a Mennonite community called, Sanctuary in Missouri.

Her search uncovers dark secrets from her family's past, including blackmail. With Sanctuary's handsome young mayor by her side, will Wynter be able to unravel this mystery?

This was an intriguing mystery, with terrific characters with great dialogue and interaction. This book had a complex plot, that kept moving and drew me in the more I read. This wasn't my typical suspense read, as it leaned more in the direction of a mystery, but it was great nonetheless.

This book was filled with many plot twists and many surprises along the way. I never would have guessed many of things that were revealed throughout. This book actually really reminded me a lot of Murder She Wrote.

The chapters were short and fast paced, each one leaving me with a cliffhanger!

Overall, this was very well written book with great characters, and a killer plot. There was definitely a lot going on, and a ton of secrets! While this wasn't quite what I was expecting, I was surprised by how much I liked it. This book was hard to put down!

The Heart's Pursuit by Robin Lee Hatcher ~ Review and Litfuse Tour

Lucie's Review: 

Silver Matlock will not stand to be jilted at the alter, and hires the services of a bounty hunter by the name of Jared Newman to find her runaway fiance. Will Silver and Jared find what they are looking for or will they perhaps find something better instead?

Silver is a real trooper, never complaining, and handling herself well while on the trail. Sometimes she and Jared don't communicate well, as Silver does not always do what she's told, and Jared doesn't tell her what he is doing. Which made for some humorous developmental interactions.

Jared is a tough, mysterious bounty hunter, with his own way of doing things, and a past that haunts him.

Overall, this is a fantastic, action-packed western adventure, with the every thing from shoot-outs, and wild chases, with good guys, bad guys, and some guys in between. The story engages quickly and the pace is wonderfully, moving ever closer to a crescendo of an exciting conclusion. The characters are strong and grow in their faith and as in individuals over the course of their journey together. A great western read!
